PLOT British spy John Preston (Michael Caine), recently demoted by his boss for a well-intentioned but unsanctioned mission, stumbles onto a covert plot by KGB agent Valeri Petrofsky (Pierce Brosnan), who is attempting to build and detonate a nuclear bomb on British soil and blame it on the Americans. With the support of the ailing MI5 director, Preston, who is still at odds with several of his superiors, attempts to uncover and thwart the plot before it's too late.

Michael is so good. I'm sorry to see him retire from movies. He is a fantastic acting coach. Or teacher. He knows exactly what to say to the students and it's very impressive.

Still a decent movie. Those were the days. Good actors, a different World. No Putins, no Camerons nor Boris Johnson. And a very different USA. And a rather romantic teen, intrigued and fascinated by life's prospects.

How do you make a movie great? You cast Michael Caine, Pierce Brosnan, Ned Beatty, Julian Glover, Ray McAnally, Ian Richardson, Anton Rodgers to name a few of this great cast, sadly many of them are no longer with us.

Definitely not a good idea to handle the eastern bloc plastic explosive with bare skin, or poor ventilation. Nausea and headaches will soon follow. On the flip side, the western bloc plastic explosives like are much more user friendly. Of course, it is always relevant to date and place of manufacture, so I generalise.

If you wanna learn about a REALLY close call, look up "Able Archer 1983" when most of West Europe almost got turned into a glass-topped parking lot. I was living in East Germany at the time. It was when the Soviets armed their nukes and placed aircrews in East Germany and Poland on full alert. In the nick of time, “Topaz” saved the day, scant minutes before the Soviets pressed the titty. “Topaz” was the code-name of the crack East German spy in NATO headquarters in Brussels, Rainer Rupp (who was a West German and spied out of conviction rather than for money). He urgently contacted his Stasi handler, Oberst Karl Rehbaum, the first deputy to the head of Department A XII responsible for NATO and EU (or at that time EC) intelligence, in Berlin, Capital of the GDR and assured him that the NATO military exercise Able Archer was just that and not a cover for a real attack. That message was hurriedly passed on to the Soviet leadership in Moscow and the dangerous situation was defused. MsG

When I heard the intriguing opening music by Lalo Schifrin I leaned back in the armchair expecting to experience a great spy drama; and I was certainly not disappointed. You just can't help but be fascinated by Michael Caine's skills in the role of an agent and spy hunter, a skill already shown in The Ipcress File. Pierce Brosnan with his cool manner is also great as an icy KGB terrorist.

I remember reading the book, by Frederick Forsyth, back in 84 when it was a cutting-edge thriller (we didn't have the internet so all info had to be found elsewhere, by other means, and Freddy had good contacts so knew a bit more than most of us aboutmilitary, political and intelligence worlds).

Suspenseful and intelligent "spy vs spy". Caine at his best, IMHO. BTW, I'm pretty sure there are health risks attached to handling radioactive materials with one's bare hands. Otherwise, seemed pretty realistic and believable. Thanks.

that American airbase was RAF Upper Hayford, I had orders to that base back in 1981, but they got canceled and I was sent to RAF Alconbury

I don't know how old you are Tex or how you grew up where etc. In the mid 70s I had nuns telling us when ( not if but when) the Russians invade run into the bush because they will shoot all beliviers, almost like 1950s drills duck and cover when told to in preparation for Skylab falling, lived I'm fear with Ronald Reagan making more MX missiles. Now I simply don't care. Nuke me, invade me, zombie apocalypse, cows with guns, whatever. The cold war man how mad is humanity

This film was made when amplifying the sound of people's foot steps, particularly when walking outside on concrete. Not a bad movie though.

The Fourth Protocol is an excellent Cold war thriller, Well the Book is, this is a fairly good film. Pierce Brosnan is excellent but I always thought Michael Caine was miscast as John Preston.

@@ScottieMcClue Sir Michael (or Maurice) is a a great actor, he was excellent in Alfie, Charlie Crocker, as Harry Palmer, Harry Brown and Alfred Pennyworth. But having read the Fourth Protocol when it was released (and all of Freddie's books) I didn't see him as Preston. Brosnan is great, and Ian Richardson as sir Nigel Irvine. . It's an exciting film but the book was much better
