That type of antenna is called a yagi, I bought a commercial one while living off grid to get internet from the property owners house (I paid my fair share for the internet) it worked really well and cost me maybe 30 bucks plus another 20-30 for a router that had removable antennas. They transmit and receive from a conical area I think mine was 15 degrees the longer the distance the less accurate you have to be to pick up a signal :D

It’s not free Wi-Fi, it’s just a Wi-Fi range extender. That only works with laptops.

I need to ask something... From what I know, WiFi works 2 ways, sending and receiving, it's bidirectional... The effective range should be the one from the device that has the smaller range, right? Although I am fairly certain that this is the case, I have heard from many folks over the years that they got a WiFi connection on their smartphones from an access point which was kilometers away... How? No smartphone could have a range greater than 300-500 meters (with no obstacle in front of it). How? This dude here sees networks from far away and the only explanation in my mind is that those networks must have great range too. If not, then how?

The explanation is the antenna itself This is an high gain antenna ( or at least that's the idea , I'm not quite sure how effective this is) basically what it does is focusing all the transmitting power in a very small area, like a very narrow cone On the opposite the common routers are equipped with omnidirectional antennas , so the power is "dissipated" in spheres The thing is obviously bidirectional , while transmitting , the cone of action is very narrow While receiving , the antenna is capable of picking up more signal (hence the name high gain),but only in that cone The downside of this type of antenna , is that you must find the correct orientation , or you don't pick up anything at all

The thing that makes me wonder about this antenna is that when he shows the WiFi networks on the PC it says: "built in" and "usb", but when I connect a wireless adapter to my PC I get: WIFI and WIFI 2. Let me know if I'm wrong!!

Science behind this ( only if u r interested ) First he is setting in a Garden. He select a time when there r very less people in the garder or park. So in the starting of the video he show the internet connection of open network or mobile hotspot like that. Now he make this antenna with many materials like iron copper or may be stainless steel every metal have its own resistivity so if we add all so this more then to drain your battery fast. The previous antenna was only made up of copper with less resistivity . Now if any one make this antenna and connect to his pc or laptop, lets assume if it show all wifi router if u try to connect any one of them u will get very very network speed like 7-8 kbps which is very low. So it not worth it dont waste ur time . And one more thing if by chance this antenna fall down and connect to ground it will get earthing it will damage ur wifi receiver or may be pc or laptop too. And in the last of the video there are 2 possibilities he tell his friends to turn on there hotspot or he just waited for more people to come to garden or park
