I love that Jamaica still has a bobsled team that competes in every Winter Olympics- One of the best traditions

The crash didn't happen for the reasons shown in the film, but it did happen. They used real footage of it in the film. One of team members later said he "felt a bump" when they tipped but did not realize they had turned over until he started to smell his helmet (which was fiberglass) friction-burning on the ice, "which is something that stays with you for many years afterward."

The actual crash footage at the end still scares me. Crazy how no one was seriously hurt. To have them finish the race in the movie by carrying the busted bobsled across the finish line was truly inspiring.

I went to Jamaica for my honeymoon and they had Jamaican bobsled team stuff everywhere. They are incredibly proud of them.

The Jamaican Bobsled team was based on a true story. They didn't win at their first Olympic team. but 4 years later they were in the running for a win!

Whenever I see this movie, I'm reminded of the Brtitsh track star who tore his hamstring. His dad came from the stands (they let him) and he walked his son across the finish line.....in the Olympics.

My mom is 76 years old and this is her favourite film of all time, she wore out the VHS tape watching it and always has it on every year when the winter comes. great comments and reactions to the film and the true story. my best bit is the airport with all the clothes lol.

This movie is so wholesome, filled with heart and inspiration. The chemistry this cast had is golden. I can recall watching the 1988 Winter Olympics when the Jamaicans hit the scene with their bobsled team and it was truly the story of the year. I do recall their run and their inevitable crash and seeing them hoist their sled and trot to the finish line. Magical moment.

Bobsled is an English/Swiss invention. English Victorian tourists in Switzerland were using delivery sleds for fun, but kept colliding with pedestrians, so the hotel owner that started the winter holiday craze there, decided to make a permanent run/course for the sleds. And bobsled/bobsleigh was born

If you haven't seen Uncle Buck, that is a John Candy movie I'm sure you would enjoy.

I once sat in the REAL and movie prop bobsleds. I believe the film model is currently displayed in the Montego Bay International Airport, while the official sled was preserved in the historical museum of St. James Parish.

Sometimes I really miss the amazing John Candy. May he rest in peace.

This was the first movie I saw in theaters, saw it with my mom and brother. We bought the soundtrack album because my dad loves the Jimmy Cliff version of "I Can See Clearly Now" so the whole family was in on it one way or another. My brother and I still quote this movie at each other from time to time, it's very 'childhood'. Glad you picked it!

Even though this movie is not 100% accurate I still love it! The characters are memorable, likeable and funny, it's still a great underdog-story and you can never go wrong with John Candy!

I remember first seeing this movie as a teen after going to a hockey game. I was in the theater in between two girls, and at the part where the father was in the crowd and showed the shirt while cheering, I reached down to my drink in between my feet and quickly squeezed out a couple of tears. It was the first time I remembered being watering up to a movie, and now as an adult I look back and laugh at quick thinking front I did to not let the ladies see.

I'm not a big Sports movie person, but I love this 1. I also like The Replacements, Facing The Giants, & Mighty Ducks 1 & 2.

I watched the Jamaican teams [they had a 2 man and 4 man team] in the '88 Winter Games - I was working in a geriatric rehabilitation ward of the hospital so patients were in bed early without the demands of a busy ward. We all sat down to watch in the evening here in Brisbane, and took turns answering patients needs. It was a great competition. Really got to watch a lot that year..........was almost always working when good sports were on [retired RN now]

This is DEFINITELY one of the BEST movies EVER!. All three of my kids were born in the 1980's, and "Cool Runnings" has always been a family favorite! To this day the phrase "You dead Mon?" is a common one that is used regularly by them when something goes wrong! I REALLY, REALLY enjoy watching your reaction videos! I look forward to seeing more!

Yes, I'm old enough to remember this when it happened... People thought they were dead or broke their necks at first. Scary! 💚

One thing that every Calgary noticed: There's no way you could get from Canada Olympic Park (where the registrations took place" to "that revolving restaurant place" (the Calgary Tower) in 30 minutes. But when they did meet...... it didn't revolve. At all. :)

My brother in law ran all the bars in Kearney Nebraska back in the 1990s. He was like Dalton in roadhouse in real life and knew a lot about the bar business. He had a bouncer that worked for him Curtis Harry this guy went to the 1994 winter Olympics games in Lillehammer Norway with the Trinidad and Tobago bobsled team.

Awesome! I watch this every 4 years before bobsleigh finals at Olympics (It's big sport in Latvia). Fun facts: real Jamaican team wasn't even close to winning when they crashed but they were close to not being too bad. Also they walked next to the Bob not carried it. Also competitors were were very friendly towards Jamaicans and the Swiss team was one of the friendliest. But I guess it doesn't make for good story 😅 Also watch "Hard boiled" already - I've been spamming for almost a year now :))))

FUN FACTS: the film is unpopular in Jamaica. Most of the events shown in the movie are either fictional or over exaggerated. There actually were two Jamaican bobsleigh teams that entered the Olympics in 1988. In 2018 Jamaica entered their first women's bobsleigh team

The God who art in Calgary prayer was ad libbed by John, there were a few versions of it but that one fit best.

You guys just put me in my HAPPY place. Been waiting FOREVER for someone to do this movie. Just a FYI - a few of those clips from the crash were actually from the REAL crash that happened on the track. Absolutely one of my favorites though. Another root for the underdog movie I think you'd like is Dolphin Tale. Nothing to do with sports - but it has just as much HEART as this one.

Guys this film is just amazing. I love it. Another film along these lines is Eddie The Eagle, another true story and incredible film. Love the channel and much respect.

Yul Brynner was a very famous actor irl known for his bald head. Also, there's there's Jamaican restaurant in Houston Texas called Cool Runnings and it has amazing food

When Irv and Derese met at the end and hugged, that right there was the perfect cap to this film. "Thank you, Coach" "Thank YOU!" Derese respected Irv despite his past. Irv brought himself out of isolation to coach their team, and Derese and company gave him a new lease on life. Irv was able to both redeem himself, come to terms with his past, and go back to the sport he once loved. That's why he thanked Derese.

My sister and I loved this movie when we were kids. So glad to see others discovering it now and enjoying it. The true story is very different yet still incredible. Originally the team was not set to compete in the four men event. They decided to go for it and another team gave them a sled to use. When one of the team members was injured another member's brother who was attending the games as a spectator was recruited to join them. Incredibly even though by that point the Games were already in progress their coach was able to get him the credentials needed to be added as an athlete. That said, the original team says they enjoy the film for what it is, and say it did capture the spirit of their team and their drive to do something no one believed they could do. All of the original team eventually went on to compete again and at one point Jamacia was ranked 8th in the world. One member went on to coach Jamaica's first women's team at the Olympic Games a few years ago. This year they are competing in womens single, two men, and four man team events. There is even for the first time a Jamaican alpine skier competing.

This is a "true" story. I remember watching the Jamaican bobsled team completing in the Olympics.

Came here to watch this after my annual rewatch of Cool Runnings. This is my New Years Eve movie since 1993. I'm so happy you watched it - I think it's so underrated and has such a good message. Thank you for reviewing and happy New Year, fellow Canadians.

The character that plays Sanka also has a role in "Operation Dumbo Drop" - which is another fantastic comedy.

When I was a kid my school was asked to go to Calgary Olympic Park and we ended up walking up the hill a bunch of times while they filmed the quick scene of them singing up the hill with the Bobsled. Also sad news during the beginning of Covid some jerks stole the bobsled from the bar where it has been hanging since the movie was made.

This movie certainly strains the concept of truth in "based on a true story", but it's probably one of the best distillations of the sports movie genre ever made, and just a delight to watch. I can't stay mad at you Cool Runnings.
