I enjoy your content. I think as an owner of multiple watches high and low end. One thing no one talks about is the cost of maintenance of high end. I've spent over 2500 pounds this month on servicing 2 Rolexes, a Breitling and an Oris, granted a significant time before intervention. My advice unless your seriously wealthy or just don't care buy cheap. If you buy a premium watch it comes with premium responsibility, if you want to pass it on?

I think the ultimate watch is covert god tier material. The muggles look at it and don't realise what it is - but a watch geek looks at it and they get it immediately. Unpretentious, not necessarily expensive, not flashy or showing off, but you just know that watch is the absolute dogs danglies. Some watches just say "Watch guy".

Powermatic 80 plastic parts will outlive the rest of the watch. Its made of polymer that was used for parts in Lemania 5100 - one of the most reliable mechanical chronograph movements out there. The same type of polymer used for transmission parts of some KTM motorcycles, so don't be hating on plastic Russel, 70% of your body consists of it nowadays.

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR "Why not make all the moving parts plastic?" you ask. Well, that's a good question! The answer lies in the Tissot Astrolon. It was a revolutionary movement (no pun intended), but unfortunately, it didn't gain much popularity, especially with the onset of the quartz crisis. So, the plastic revolution never truly materialized.

Grand Seiko does my head in: amazing dials , finishing and movements but Zero effort but Into brackets with no taper and clasps without micro adjust a product is only as good as it's weakest link ... So disappointing as they must have the technology and ability to correct it in seconds but don't .

I was surprised to see the AE1200 wasn't on the list. I can't think of another watch ever created that is so much watch for so little money. Like you mentioned about the F-91, when I wear my AE1200 I wonder why I even bothered buying any other watch. Next thing I know every other watch in the watch box is gathering months of dust because the AE1200 does literally everything you could want in a watch.

My two cents here: the 50 meters water resistance is good enough for a field watch. During my service, I was wearing a plastic Swatch with 30 meter water resistance and had never any problem with the watch. But as mountain infantry rifle man, scuba diving was not our priority. 🙂 Second; some folks says that manual winding watches such as a Khaki Field or a Speedy are a pain to own.

Agreed! With regards to field watches like the Hamilton, military watches are made for a specific often singular purpose. To be honest many UK soldiers wear an F91w or one of the Garmin variants these days. For example CWC G10s are like hens teeth in my experience of the MOD; over the past 25yrs I’ve probably seen half a dozen in the wild & the MOD issue one is only 50m water resistant( which is more than enough for traversing a river) & has acrylic glass, hence why the CWC dive watches are produced for clearance divers etc . Field watches are for land based evolutions not for when wearing a rebreather

About the Hamilton's 5ATM WR: you have to remember that this watch was originally built to a military specification. Not "military" as in "tough enough for any war zone" but "contract won by the lowest government bidder". Also meaning, "sustained swimming is *not* a general military duty." 5ATM WR will survive a torrential downpour as well as *casual* swimming (aka splashing around hip-deep in the shallow end of the pool, which is how wet a fully armored and armed infantryman wants to get). In comparison, Marathon Watches' General Purpose military watch is built to current military specs and is 3ATM WR.

Not a powermatic80 fanboy, but plastic has been used in mechanical movements for decades and decades, lemania5100 comes to mind. Even the powermatic80 has been around for 10 years already and have never heard a story of the plastic pallet wheel or pallet fork breaking, and not all of them contain plastic either. As well, you'll not need to regulate them as they regulate them to cosc spec at the factory, and the free sprung balance system is also much harder to go out of regulation than the more common regulation organ.

😂 I think you could say Casio sucks for all watch collectors, as for under £100 they offer "the only watch you need", whether it's the £10 FW91 or the all singing dancing G-Shock with regularly retails at Argos for £79.99. Watches that suck for me are the overpriced, overhyped and often unobtainable ones which offer little more than a display of your status in this strange world of aspiration. Must confess don't understand the negativity towards the PRX. The auto keeps superb time (mine -3 secs per week) and providing the movement lasts several years and can be replaced inexpensively then I would have little worry given everything else it offers. Keep up the good work, your videos are certainly a refreshing take in the world of watches and really enjoy what the wife says 😁👍

Re PRX. I almost refused to even look at a PRX for a long time due to people like yourself trashing the movement and even now i part agree with your opinions on it BUT after finally trying one on it was such a beautiful watch and wore so well I now own two of them. Now yes I still agree on the use of plastic parts but has anyone shown and proven that those parts actually wear out or fail faster? Also as for the regulation. Well I spent some time looking into the movement and when seeing the high tech laser based regulation they use on them they really are performing the best they ever will. Now sure they might get worse over time when people don't look after them or abuse them but so far it's one of the most accurate movements in my collection and i do own some really nice watches. Given how many PRX's are getting sold I am also sure in a few years time other companies that deal in making parts and tools for watchmaking will come up with some kit that will just swap out those few plastic parts or even just OEM spec new parts so the argument many have on them not been serciable will become a mute point. Regulation? People already say their are ways to do it on these if needed but I have not looked into that much. So could tissot just done it better from the start? Yeah sure but then it would not be the bargain it sells for. I have a gentleman powermatic as well which is the same movement but without the plastic parts in it so one could just swap in that spec powermatic into a PRX anyway 5-10 years down the track.

Something for people to note on the powermatic 80 movmt inside the PRX, this is the 23-jewel version of the movement which, as the video says, does have a plastic escapement and pallet fork. However, there is more than one version of the powermatic 80, Certina, Hamilton, Mido etc all modify them slightly for their needs. BUT, within Tissot if you see any watch which has the "25-jewel" version then this is a more premium version with real, metallic components in the movement and would be the better option! E.g. the one inside the Gentleman or the Certina DS action diver.

Who's buying a $600 Tissot to be an heirloom watch? To me the problem with the PRX movement isn't the plastic parts, it's that the watch and movement are so cheap that it will never be worth the cost to service or repair. This problem is common to all cheap mechanicals (including your precious SKX). Personally, if I take it to service and it gets a new movement, I'd call that a win. It's not the kind of watch where parts originality is ever going to matter.

The PLASTICmatic 80 is in everything and just isn't as good as ETA's 3 jewel quartz movements in the quartz versions of the same lines. I have a watch with that movement and it gains 3 seconds a month. Not days, but about half a minute a YEAR accuracy for a lot less than that cheap "auto-plastic" movement. Pick whichever name you like - I'm partial to "auto-plastic" myself. * note - don't actually GET the digital PRX. Get the same movement in something with hands and dials. It is indeed interesting that the best Swatch group watches are their quartz models in terms of reliability and accuracy. What you are looking for is "ETA Heavydrive" or "3 Jewels" somewhere on the face or specs. I think it's the least expensive high accuracy quartz movement currently.

They even publish the costs of servicing the movement, which is quite affordable. So there’s no reason why you couldn’t pass on a PRX to another generation just like any other mechanical watch.

I think the use of "plastic" in the escapement of the PRX is a mountain being made out of a molehill. All the criticisms regarding that are based on hypotheticals and not grounded at all in reality. It's almost as if this issue sprouted up simply to throw cold water on all the hype surrounding the watch. Like it HAS to have an Achilles heel, right? WHAT IF....the plastic parts wear out sooner than a comparable metal component. WHAT IF....the Powermatic 80 is completely dropped by Tissot rendering the watch completely unserviceable. All these are in fact POSSIBLE, but currently are not an issue. There have been no reported escapement failures due to the materials used in this movement. The "servicing" cost of the PRX is more than reasonable, at less than $200.00 USD for FULL maintenance, which includes an entire rebuild or replacement of the movement. No one is expecting you to hand down a PRX Powermatic 80 to your children. In the same way that I'm not going to hand down a watch with a Seiko NH34 inside. It is designed to be an entry level Swiss Automatic movement, not a Rolex/Omega/AP/Patek (insert your favorite luxury brand here) killer. And I don't think that this makes the SUCK to own. IF the Powermatic 80 starts suffering component failures, and Tissot/Swatch group completely drops support for the PRX, then I'd say sure, that makes it suck to own. But considering the Powermatic 80 or a version thereof is being used not only by Tissot, but other Swatch Group brands, I don't see anyone dropping this movement anytime soon.

I can attest that the Khaki Field watch is junk. I use to own one. I bought it brand new from the online AD. The big crown with no crown guards is a huge point of failure. Also that it is not a screw down crown and manual wind is a disaster waiting to happen. I wore mine exactly 3 times to my office job before the crown just twisted off like snapping a toothpick. My watchmaker said the crown stem had corroded which meant water had seeped into it and due to the daily manual winding friction, the crown was inevitably going to break off. Especially because the components were cheap and it was not constructed to the tolerances of everyday use. AVOID BUYING THIS WATCH!!

The SKX013 was my first automatic watch and I really like it and will definitely keep it, but every now and then I wonder if I shouldn‘t have bought the 007 instead as the 013 looks really small when you look down at your wrist due to the small dial. The overall watch does not look particularly small on my 6.5 inch wrist…

I really don’t get the Swatch collab hate. I work in an office where the most common worn watch is some kind of Rolex and the second most common kind of watch is an Apple watch. I’m the weirdo wearing GS and regular Seiko to the office. The common ground I have with the Rolex crowd is geeking out over the Moonswatch and the Swatch Fifty Fathoms. They’re fun watches and don’t cost a ton. As well compensated as we are, we don’t make enough to have a watch box full of “fun watches” each costing thousands of dollars. Which is why I don’t own a ton of Zodiac.

It’s a good point however with a plastic cog that has teeth will surely degrade quicker than a stainless steel one? It’s just a bit sneaky isn’t it. Cost cutting can be the only reason?????
@twraia
@twraia 7 ай бұрын
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR oh mate I agree, it’s more than a bit sneaky. I dislike enormously what the Swatch group has been doing with its greenwashing plastic, disposable movement design, various cost cutting measures in its relentless pursuit of profit. Moonswatch & 50FF are scandalous in my opinion. It’s why despite liking the quartz PRX, I still haven’t bought one yet - I don’t like the Swatch group that much. But I do wonder about whether we’re missing something with the use of polymer in watch movement - is there an argument to be made about plastic being superior in some ways? Plastic has come a long way, and I can see how in specific applications, plastic could be preferred over steel. Would appreciate it if someone’s read more comprehensive comments about it could share them.

One of the most sucky things for me in a watch is a incorporated bracelet/strap that can’t be swapped out with standard or a different style. I have an older Citizen watch that I love but, it has a 16mm lug width and then the rubber strap flares out to 20/21mm. So it’s impossible to find a good replacement strap option plus the original strap is weak and defective design 😡

About the Powermatic 80's plastic internals: this is one of the ways that watchmakers avoid damage by accidental magnetism. Because there are magnets everywhere (stereo speakers, clasps on wallets, smartphones, laptops, etc) there's a higher chance of a mechanical watch's movement getting magnetic damage than there was during the 70s. Since most buyers of the Tissot *aren't* super-enthusiasts, they won't try to regulate a watch on their own and they'll bring it back to the AD for fixing anyway.
