Restoring an old french hand cranked grinder from Val D'or , very possibly dating from 1933.
As the title suggests, I restored this wonderful and complex tool. My dear friend from OTND Restoration channel sent me.
I started the restoration, by disassembly, as usual. As I have seen in other restorations of the same tool, I expected the sprockets to be simple, attached only to the holes in the gearbox. I was very surprised when I opened the gearbox and saw that it also had ball bearings. That was the moment when I realized that this restoration is a bit more complex, but at the same time even more satisfying. This restoration video is a little longer than I usually do, but I did it to make the work satisfying for you. Apart from asmr restoration, you will see many things restored using hands, others being restored with the help of the lathe. You will also see sandblasting, powder coating, making new parts on the lathe machine , diamond dressing grinding wheel , making new parts on the milling machine and etching brass for making a new name plate for this beautiful tool.
I worked with pleasure as I do every time, and this will be seen in the video. I hope you enjoy both , video editing and restoration.
I also want to thank you for your patience in waiting for my videos and thank you for giving me love in your comments. Cheers , David !

I just wanted to stay thank you for your videos. I have anxiety that gets worst before falling asleep or even, like now, middle of the night, I wake up, my brain goes haywire, and I found that watching your videos calms me down. I don't worry, I don't stress as much. I just enjoy the process. So thank you

My dad had a rusty grinder almost like this. Would send hours as a kid in his workshop sharpening anything I could get my hands on. Really brings back memories. Now it lies hidden away in a cupboard... Would love to restore it one day and display it with pride in my workshop. Thank you for the video! Your work is amazing.

Answers the question of "how did this thing looked and worked when it was new". Some stuff from about 100 years ago was pretty complex technology. Hand cranked and otherwise human powered machines tend to be quite interesting.

I love seeing the different approaches between you and your restoration "colleagues" here on youtube - The slight differences are interesting, especially seeing how you all end up with amazing results. Another factor I love, is seeing all the different kinds of old equipment; Items that aren't made anymore, not to mention the rugged quality of stuff made to last, compared to our modern plastic equivalents, is really cool. Can't wait to see all the projects you have to share in the future! Thank you, and good luck in the next ones!

My name is Mark my dad taught me to fabricate since I was little I'm 63 now and I'm glad to see some people still enjoy working with the roll,I use to make brake shoes for cars.my dad left a tool in the shop that puts a quarter inch crease in metal as you roll around the part to stiffen it up and makes it more rigid do you know the name of this tool I've used it alot I think it's invaluable,but I never learned everything about metal ,I'll never match him,but I did learn cnc,brake,hydraulic drills welding,tig mig,silver soder,sheer,sand blast,I saw you doing some hand jogging with the cnc.i really appreciate watching you restore, it brought back memories,the stories I could tell.The one thing my dad taught me was to respect the tools you work with check and double check and you'll keep all you limbs. Good job on the video

Had a hard time enjoying the rest of video after watching this. Should have spray welded it to build up metal. Then turned it down to right size. Just because it looks good does not mean it was done right. I am being very critical but this is what they do for a job.
@CoolAgainRestoration
@CoolAgainRestoration Жыл бұрын
Hi @I’m right you’re wrong! Normally yes but depend where that part goes after. In my case, that parts was not damaged if I take it a little of material. I read it what Jamed wrote and he has right. But not in this case. Where needed to remove some material ( I removed to the gear where the handle is attached) for making it smaller and to can add a bush after. I attached the bush to the handle and after that they fit perfectly.

@@CoolAgainRestoration I'm going to say BS you removed material off the shaft on the first gear which made it smaller It is now not going to fit as intended by the manufacturer You're just playing wrong admit it yeah you have nice tools but you certainly don't know what you're doing when it comes to machining or at least you don't know about allowable tolerances I don't know maybe they do something different on the other side of the world but I've been machining parts for over 30 years in states and not how it works here if you do something like that here it's called a Chicago rebuild maybe you should have just painted the damn thing and sent it on its way would have been tighter.

wonderful restoration! the handle crank looks like it was cast, I've heard that cast iron needs to be pre-heated before it can be safely welded, does this matter for a small object like this where the entire section is heated by the welding or did you pre heat it off screen? I really like that you added a brass core so that you didn't have to remake the wooden handle.

i really do enjoy your videos a lot because unlike many restoration channels, you seem to really care for the history and meaning behind each item youre restoring. you arent making a new thing, you are RESTORING something to its former glory and thats wonderful :] keep it up!

My OCD was calm for the first time. Everything I noticed and thought you wouldn’t see or do something about, you actually noticed them too. Are you sure you not OCD? Perfectly executed process.

Watching the video, I thought 'that black powder coat came out real nice', then came 'oooh you saved the wooden handle' and it looks good. Then you redid that little name plaque and I was just done.. very nice work, indeed...
