When Aunt Clara met Darrin's parents and mentioned her doorknob collection, Frank asked her where she got them all. Clara answered, " I don't remember, but there are lot of people having a heck of a time trying to open their doors! "

Aunt Clara was a loveable character and a "good witch" much like Samantha. The character of Endora, although very well-played by Agnes Moorehead, was not intended to be an endearing character. Darren, especially the first Darren, was a very good guy and naturally gravitated towards the good witch, Clara.

@@1talldaddy Wrong. Darren was abused by the other Witches. He was made a promise by Samantha, on the night of their wedding, which could have and should have been annulled on the grounds of fraud, because Samantha didn't reveal that she was a witch until after they were married. It was Samantha who told Darren that she didn't want to use witchcraft, that she wanted to be a "good wife". It was Samantha who promised that she wouldn't ever use witchcraft. It was Samantha who constantly broke her promise to her husband. In the meantime, Endora turned Darren into a Werewolf, Maurice banished him into oblivion, Endora LIED and LIED and LIED to Samantha about Darren, accusing him of cheating on her, casting spells to convince Samantha to leave Darren, and a couple of times Samantha did pack her bags and leave, because she believed her mother, who she knew hated Darren, over her own husband. That is grounds for divorce right there. Endora didn't even give Darren a chance. She didn't have the decency to call him by his name. She tried to break up the marriage on the wedding night, never even used Darren's real name, always mocking him, abusing him, bullying him, and threatening him. What real man would ever put up with anything like that? Darren loved Samantha, I don't think she ever really loved him. I think it was a rebellious act towards her upbringing and her mother, or she would have protected him from her mother, not supported her mother over the abuse of her husband. And remember Darren knows they could kill him, or turn him into a monkey, nd destroy ant evidence in a second, and get away with it. Most people would be terrified of those circumstances, but Darren stayed, despite his wife's betrayal and abuse. The narrator here is correct, when he stated that the other witches TORTURED Darren. All you ignorant females, who clearly don't live in the real world, always pick on Darren, but Samantha said "Witches Honor" when she promised Darren she wanted to be like a Mortal wife, and that she wouldn't use witchcraft. Clearly, this is a TV show, and without witchcraft, it wouldn't be much of a show, but in reality, Samantha broke her PROMISE on every episode. It shows that Samantha, doesn't have honor, she is a liar and a manipulator, and there are times when I wonder if she ever loved Darren at all. She always sided with her mother, no matter the horrifying things she put Darren through, and her promises aren't worth the oxygen she uses to say them. Yet we always see the unfair hatred for Darren in the comments, despite that HE was the one being abused, tortured, lied to, lied about, comments by women who obviously don't have a man in their lives, but instead, have an abundance of cats.

In Bewitched, Clara is the one of Samantha’s family who loves and likes Darren for himself and does not tease or taunt him. Arthur says he likes Darren but does tease him in hopes of loosening him up. Serena runs hot and cold with Darren but she does tease him. Everyone else in Samantha’s family finds him a boer at best and teases him often, sometimes mercilessly. (To be fair, Darren analogously can’t stand them, but he can’t do anything.) This is what makes Clara special, her affection for Darren. And Miss Lorne’s absence from the show is clearly noticeable.

Darren was also friendlier towards Uncle Arthur as long as the pranks he pulled weren’t dangerous. He seemed more tolerant of Arthur. Serena was more of an annoyance to him mostly because she’d pose as Samantha and try to steal Darren away from her.

As someone who was born and grew up in Pennsylvania, I was also surprised to discover Ms Lorne was born only an hour or so from where I lived. Aunt Clara was a bit like the woman my brothers and sisters, as well as all my cousins, called Aunt Teresa. Turned out she was my Mom's Aunt Teresa. I was an adult before I realized she was my Grandmother's sister, and not just a friend of some kind. Re her age: Her age is also listed as 26 on the 1910 census, confirming a birth year of 1883-84. Since the 1900 census was taken as of 1 June and the 1910 census on 1 April--both before Marion's August birthday--we can conclude she was born in 1883. Other documentation such as passport applications give different years up to 1888, which was used most often. In researching genealogy over 20+ years I've learned that the earlier documents are usually (but not always) correct. Her parents, as head of household, would have given the information on the 1900 and 1910 censuses and had no reason to lie. Thanks for highlighting this wonderful lady!

I remember meeting her as a child, I was 3, it was the end of 1965. I saw her a few times after that. I was 6 when she died and I was just understanding what death was. Like most older people she taught me so much that I could never read in a book. Respect your elders, you never know what you might learn.

that must have been really special to meet someone like that. it is true that the young should listen to the older generation, many of them are a "WALKING ENCYCLOPEDIA", that way you do not have to re invent the wheel!!!!. now that I am older, I talk to high school graduates, and the first thing they say is "I KNOW EVERYTHING" and I tell them "YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT, YOU ARE SO STUPID"!!!. when I was growing up ,I hung around older people, I am glad I did, their knowledge and wisdom is priceless!!.

Bewitched was before my time, my mother was a child when it originally aired My mother said to me when I was streaming the show that she loved Aunt Clara...Marion Lorne is superb, and it is really strange to think that both her and Agnes Moorhead who played Endora died long before I was born I love Elizabeth Montgomery, another person that went too soon

I had no idea how established and versatile Marion Lorne was. I loved her in Bewitched ❤️ She was a very accomplished actress all throughout plays, movies and TV in her time! I’m very sad that she passed away before getting her award 😢. But Thank You so much Marion for all the great performances that I have enjoyed so much throughout the years. 🥰

I enjoyed this so much. My mother loved Marion Lorne, and she passed it on to us kids. We didn't have a TV until 1956, so we only knew her from the Garry Moore Show and Bewitched. But she was such a character!!

Thank you for such a great and respectful, reverent biographical overview of Marion Lorne's life and career. I watched Bewitched from its first airing until it ended, and I always looked forward to seeing her as Aunt Clara during the years she was on the show. I felt as if she was like my own Aunt, or Grandmother. Her matronly ways were so genuine, and one could feel the love she put into the character. She was genuine, and one cannot get any better than that. The stars of yesteryear were real genuine stars, and they had talent.

Aunt Clara grabs your heart & funny bone in every scene that she's in. How can you not love someone who collects ornate doorknobs? She seemed to have lived a rich, happy eccentric real life.A daring young woman for the times, (PA to NYC to London & back to the states for a new level in her career).Thank you for your research & presenting us her backstory.

The timing of this great profile of Marion Lorne blows me away, because until a few days ago I had only known her as the ditzy-yet-nice witch on Bewitched. But then I happened to see an appearance she made on an old 1950's-1960's game show called "I've Got A Secret." The funny thing is, she was basically doing her same ditzy, confused character during that appearance even though it predated "Bewitched" by a few years. I could tell by the studio audience's reaction that they were used to seeing Marion playing that befuddled character, as if it was almost her trademark. I didn't know about the years in England, or all the success Marion and her husband enjoyed on the stage in that country. You did a great job profiling her.

What a treat! I always loved Marion Lorne. Many years ago, I saw her in a movie where she supposedly sang. All I remember (if I accurately remember this) is she was standing next to a car and that she had a surprisingly beautiful voice. I've often thought of that and wondered if she was really singing or just lip syncing.
