The Soviets invade Switzerland?! BAD IDEA, They shall be greeted by a horde of Angry Swiss Riflemen using the Stgw.57, which is perhaps pinnacle of cold war battle rifles. Or perhaps the coolest looking battle rifle of the era. This rifle truly is a work of art and captures the impressive nature of Swiss engineering.

LORE:
The Sturmgewehr 57, often abbreviated as Stgw. 57, is a Swiss military rifle that has a rich history and is highly regarded for its reliability and accuracy. Introduced in the late 1950s, it has served as the standard-issue rifle for the Swiss armed forces for several decades and continues to be used in a reserve capacity as of my last knowledge update in September 2021. Here's a detailed description of the Stgw. 57:
Design and Appearance:
Type: The Stgw. 57 is a selective-fire, gas-operated rifle, meaning it can be fired in semi-automatic and fully automatic modes. It is chambered in the 7.5x55mm Swiss cartridge.
Length: The rifle has an overall length of approximately 43.7 inches (111 cm), making it a relatively long and substantial firearm.
Weight: The Stgw. 57 weighs around 10.4 pounds (4.7 kg) without ammunition, making it a sturdy and robust rifle.
Barrel: It features a 25.6-inch (65 cm) long barrel with a flash suppressor at the muzzle.
Features:
Wooden Stock: The Stgw. 57 has a wooden stock, typically made from beech wood, which gives it a traditional and timeless appearance.
Iron Sights: It is equipped with adjustable iron sights, including a rear aperture sight and a front post sight. These sights are known for their precision and ease of use.
Bayonet Lug: The rifle has a bayonet lug, allowing for the attachment of a bayonet for close combat situations.
Magazine: The Stgw. 57 typically uses a detachable box magazine with a capacity of either 24 or 36 rounds, although other magazine capacities exist.
Safety: It features a manual safety selector, allowing the shooter to switch between semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes or to engage the safety to prevent accidental discharges.
Reliability: One of the standout characteristics of the Stgw. 57 is its legendary reliability. It is known for its ability to function in adverse conditions, including extreme cold and wet environments.
Accuracy: The Stgw. 57 is highly regarded for its accuracy, which is attributed to its well-designed barrel and sights. It is capable of accurate fire at medium to long ranges.
Historical Significance:
The Sturmgewehr 57 was adopted by the Swiss military in the late 1950s, replacing the earlier K31 bolt-action rifle. It played a crucial role in the Swiss defense strategy during the Cold War era. Its adoption reflected Switzerland's commitment to maintaining a well-armed and trained citizen militia.
Legacy:
Although the Stgw. 57 has been largely phased out from active service in the Swiss military, it remains in reserve use and is also a sought-after collector's item. Its reputation for durability, accuracy, and reliability ensures that it continues to be a respected firearm among enthusiasts and collectors.
In summary, the Sturmgewehr 57 (Stgw. 57) is a classic Swiss military rifle known for its robust construction, reliability, and accuracy. Its historical significance and continued use in various capacities have solidified its place in the world of firearms.

@@albanhabakuk53This was my service rifle during my time in the Swiss military. Still have it at home. I think the thing is damn near indestructible. One guy would brace the rifle across his thighs and the rest of the platoon would use it as a "jumping off point" to enter a building through a first floor window. If somebody didn't secure the rifle properly inside our IFV, it would get smashed around inside the vehicle when driving over rough terrain. Still fired accurately. As if it never left my sleeping bag during the night. Obviously anything can break, but it definitely takes a beating without missing a beat.

Fun fact, there are scales on each legs of the bi-pod that would be used to range the rifle grenades when used in indirect fire. You would set the rifle on the ground, hook your swiss army knife to the bayonet lug and use it as a plumb and read the range on the bipod leg. Absolutely bonkers

Fun fact about the Stgw. 57: the ejection port is actually shorter than the cartridge. Since the ejector swipes the base of the case sideways off the bolt face, it ejects base first and so even unfired rounds clear the port without problems.

How are the gun laws in the Netherlands? Would have assumed this rifle, even in semi, would be illegal. Here in the States we just assume everything is illegal everywhere else. Always like to hear how things actually work in other places in relation to gun ownership.
@waltarb8573
@waltarb8573 10 ай бұрын
@@hattorihanzo2275 I actually have this answer copy pasted because I hear it often hahaha. But its actually pretty chil, imo chiller than the USA in the types of stuff you can own. Just shooting them is more of a hassle since it has to be at a range. anyways here my copy paste. the difficulty of getting a firearms license in the Netherlands is really overstated here tbh, you need to be a part of a shooting club and the KNSA(which is like our national rifle association which holds the registry of people) get a slip from the government that says that you aren't a felon(costs a couple of bucks, application is really easy). Then for your aspirant phase you are only allowed to shoot a .22 rifle with bolt action. this is often for 12 club days or until a instructor deems you proficient enough after that you can shoot any .22 weapon. Then after your 1st year of shooting you are allowed to buy your own .22 rifle which you will need a special permit for and permission from your regions police (which they will almost never decline unless they have good suspicion), it needs to be stored in a properly anchored safe, with a different locked ammo safe in it or besides it. After 2 years of shooting at a club you can also get a 9mm handgun even if you didn't own a firearm before. You are allowed to shoot bigger calibers at the shooting club at this point with their weapons (9mm, .44 mag, .308, .300 winmag whatever). And after a year of owning a .22 rifle you are free to go for any caliber. Restriction is max 5 guns, 10000rounds of ammo and 3kg of smokeless powder max. Other restrictions are no full auto, supressors, if a rifle has a foldable stock it has to be a minimum of 60 centimeters folded, pistols with higher caliber than .25 acp and shorter barrels than 6,35cm are not allowed. If you apply for a collectors license which is a bit harder to get(you pretty much need to write a whole essay on firearm history, easy enough for us gun nuts though) You are allowed to own EVERYTHING, full autos, mounted LMG's hell even working AA guns if it fits in your secured armory. Just dont expect the range officer to let you shoot a hotchkiss at the range. Couple of older weapons are license free which includes all blackpowder rifles, some leverguns the 1897 winchester trenchgun and some other older shotguns. You can own those if you are 18+ but no ammo. They won't count in your max 5 gun tally if you do have a license and then you can still shoot them. Other than that semi auto AK with drum mag is no problemo for example, and we don't have weird laws surrounding military style weapons from abroad, so norincos and sig's for everyone! Unfortunately most younger dutch people even those with an interest in firearms don't know this and the sport is having an insane amount of greyness and lack of younger poeple, making the range atmosphere not that great at most clubs.

@Almost_Made_It 10 ай бұрын
@@waltarb8573I’m no fan of the increasing US gun control but I don’t think those laws can be considered “chiller” than ours. Even in the worst states I would consider your laws only equally restrictive, and in different ways. In California you might not be able to own a AK with 30s, but you can own other semi autos, as many as you want, no 1 year 22 restriction, have as much ammo and powder as you want, shoot on your land or public land etc… And the actually free states only restrict you on full auto and suppressors and short barrel rifles and shotguns because the federal government makes you pay a tax and register first. No caliber or pistol size restrictions at all. Obviously we can carry almost everywhere and unfortunately we need that ability more and more every year with our increasing number of violent criminals. Some states are really bad though and do everything they can to infringe on gun ownership and won’t stop until they are specifically ordered by the courts to change, but then they just enact slightly different but equally terrible laws and let the court process restart.

@@Almost_Made_It it's personal I rather have a time limit before buying and then able to go wild without weird domestic made laws or surplus ammo import regulation. You are going through that route of shooting doff calibers naturally anyways so when starting out young you will hardly notice it. Carrying guns is ofc completely useless here since no one will harm you to begin with. The round limit is a bit silly but on the other hand I don't need more than 10k rounds and 3kg of powder for reloading that shit will last me a while and I don't need to hoard ammo to begin with since availability is solid here. I do really dislike the fact you can't shoot on your own land for leisure. But I'm deff glad we have super chill sbr laws. But all in all I'm glad with our situation as a collector and would feel restricted in the USA personally. That is not an attack I wish you all also could go wild buying Serbian z76's and whatever and not deal with stupid pistol braces. As a gun community we need to have each others backs so if someone asks you how it is in the Netherlands you can tell them how it is instead of scaring them away because when people stop owning is when they will crack down with dumb laws. We almost got a stupid mag cap law implemented last year but luckily we fought for it and where able to just apply with a bullshit letter for exemption that has to be accepted anyways. And like I said it's trivial to get a collectors license which revokes the limit. Hell I bought a full auto Aug a2 for 1800 euros that's the freedom I prefer and we all have our personal way how we want it. I support you all in your fight for better legislation. Hope the US gun folks will accept ours and support it as well 🙏

Ausgezeichnet! Switzerland has been a country of riflemen for centuries. General Henri Guisan led them through the threats and perils of WWII, and had developed the Swiss Redoubt to resist the possible Nazi invasion ("Operation Tannenbaum", which the Germans had committed ten divisions for, but nixed for a host of reasons). According to General Guisan, the Swiss were to take ten Germans for every Swiss lost, they were to fight to the last bullet, then go to the bayonet. Switzerland also has bunkers honeycombed all over the place, enough for the entire population and then some. They are a great model of tenacious devotion to liberty and peaceful coexistence, and have a mindset in keeping with our Founding Fathers and the modern American Remnant that cherish such things. Great video and rifle btw.

In my recruit school we still shot with rifle grenades. Afterwards only the Übermittlungssoldaten(transmission soldiers) had the Kabelwurfgranate (grenade to lay telefonlines). This made it possible to shoot telephone lines over rivers or steep cliffs. The 57 was an extremely reliable and stable weapon and in 1991, when my unit was converted to the Stgw 90, we had several broken new rifles because the new Stgw was no longer as robustly built. I still have my 57.

Aside from that odd-looking camouflage (which, having been in the Swiss Alps, WORKS with their mosses and lichens), I've always liked their straight-pull rifles that fire 7.5 Swiss. It's a good round, and they really value marksmanship. What I see with this thing, and the StG90 - every rifleman has a full-length barrel, good iron sights, and a bipod (plus, the StG90 clips its mags together, for 60 rds on the gun) - and their doctrine generally has them fighting from prepared positions (concrete trenches etc.). Almost like EVERY SINGLE TROOPER has an LMG. Which is probably why no one messes with them!

It works even better in forests (For which it was designed). Your imagination of switzerland being covered with mosses and lichens (which apear only in a tiny bit of switzerland, i.e. above and just a bit below the treeline) is quite a bit funny 🙂
@alessandrohuber4407
@alessandrohuber4407 9 ай бұрын
The reason for this pattern is that it could be used in urban areas also, nothing to do with mosses and lichens. The non-official name by the Swiss Italian was the pizza pattern, by the French and Swiss Germans the 4 fruits pattern. The pattern is still used today for tents. The whole M70 system was terrible, it was also a time where old equipment was still mixed with more modern Warefare stuff, just imagine being issued a WWII leather belt in the late 1980s. They started to issue proper equipment in 05 and 07...any other period a portion of your stuff was 40+ years old. Special forces now have their dedicated stuff. Nowadays only selected infantry groups have an LMG, usually one for A and one for B, the anti tank Fass90 is called Fass97 and the poor soul that would have often would also have to carry a Panzer Faust. The infantry also has an Appuntato carrying a FASS90 with a scope, special forces use a shortened version of the FASS90 and a handgun.

I never had a malfunction with the Stgw90, its a great rifle. Easier to carry on long marches because its lighter, and easier to manipulate for urban combat, yet still very accurate, so overall the better gun. Also the smaller rounds were designed to wound and not to kill, which is tactically a better way to force a retreat of the enemy. For sure the Stgw57 was more fun to shoot, with its bigger calibre and stronger recoil. Still remember the gun smoke and smell of the powder.
