Yeah, the first time I learnt about it, it was kind of depressing. You finally get an ending to the Three Kingdoms period and China is united again under Jin, only to hear that everything goes to shit just decades later and China turns into a mess for several more centuries. You can't even tell a good story because it's too messy, there is no clear narrative and no heroic journey for pretty much anyone.

By all accounts you can see many similarities between the time periods of fall of the western roman empire and the fall of Han and the time period between the fall and the coming of the golden age with the roman case being the coming of Charlemagne Frankist empire and in Han case the Tang Dynasty.

Chinese history has so many parallels with European history. In European history, it's very unfair to apply modern ethnic identities to ancient or early medieval populations. Ethnicities have always and will always evolve after all. Ethnicities are complicated social constructs shaped by various factors. The same logic applies to China.
@ingdjr5573
@ingdjr5573 7 ай бұрын
@@loganmiller6879 I think that there already have a primitive ethnic identity. It's the same as how people called themselves "Romans" in the Eastern Roman Empire, During the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, southern China and northern China claimed that they were both "orthodox" Han people.
@salvatorenostrade3331
@salvatorenostrade3331 4 ай бұрын
@@ingdjr5573 It's more as every ruling party ever to rule China proper (not a conquering force but a stable empire) has always claimed to be the successor of "Han" at the end of the day. Han is more of a standard than an ethnicity to me, as I guarantee if you do a DNA analysis of Han, especially in the North it'd be far more varied than one would think due to Turkic, Mongolic, Tungusic / Jurchen, and Tibetan inbreeding. Hell, even Korean and Japanese could be found (mainly due to Japan's brutal occupation of China but that's beside the point). Even Kublai Khan and the Mongols who ruled during the Yuan Dynasty likely would have partially or fully sinicized had it not been for the famine and the plague that hit them and allowed for the instability that was the birth of the Ming Dynasty. Yuan themselves had to acknowledge Song, Jin, and Liao respectively as recognizing all 3 (2 being technical foreign powers who all occupied China and considered themselves the rightful "Chinese" dynasty) would help with ruling over China proper. I think the idea of Han is so successful because all non-Chinese rulers who wished to stay and rule over the Chinese had to acknowledge that if they wished to indeed be a ruler in China proper or over China proper they'd have to "be" Chinese via the mandate of heaven and acknowledging their predecessors legitimacy. Hence why the Khitans, Tanguts, and Jurchens all started sinicizing themselves in order to rule over their Han populace prior to Ghengis's expansion. I personally think had Kublai or his predecessors adopted this train of thought the Ming dynasty may not have come to fruition or would take far longer in time to come to fruition as sinicizing makes it far easier to rule over and control China proper.

It is very, very different. The north/south divide is largely parochial and based on English indifference and arrogance towards self-created notions of culture. China's north/south divide is more stark and was based more on pure territorial ambitions and the notions of statehood. England never had a war of purely north vs south, it'a virtually the same people imagining differences just to fight and plunder.

The funny thing is the Tang dynasty rulers may have had Turkic blood in them. Although classifying the Xianbei as Turkic or Mongolic is dubious at best due to modern ethnic standards being unfair to group people of the past the Xianbei tribes they associated the greatest with seemed to lean towards more of what we'd consider modern Turkic peoples. A lot of China and Chinese generals and officials have all had "foreign" blood. Considering China has had Sogdian, Korean, Jurchen, Tangut, Turkic, and Mongolic people all within its history intermarrying and warring / ruling respective states and dynasties it's no surprise that several ruling families of "Han" likely had foreign blood introduced at some point in time. Albiet most likely through the maternal line rather than the paternal line hence why they are still Han.

Southern Xiongnu's confederation includes some Eurasian tribes, like Jie whose faces are described in Chinese history as "deep-eye and high-nose", but the bulk of Southern Xiongnu is still east Asian or yellow race, like Xianbei, the Mongols, and the later Jurchens. While Northern Xiongnu traveled west and gradually became different along the way. But still, when the Europeans first saw them, they describe Northern Xiongnu as "shallow-eye and flat-nose".

Fact 1. Southern China at the time of the Northern & Southern Dynasties was far from being sinicized, only the Jiangnan and the Bashu regions were sinicized, while other regions, especially the Far South and the Southwest, had numerous tribes, who were the ancestors of modern-day Hmong-Mien, Kradai, and Austroasiatic peoples. Fact 2. The "soft, cultured, and shrewd" stereotype only fits people from Jiangsu and Zhejiang, but not other places of Southern China. For instance, people from Sichuan, Hunan, and Guangxi are quite bold and brave when it comes to battles.

Why do some chinese dynasties have 'Former' or 'Later' in their name?
@CoolHistoryBros
@CoolHistoryBros 3 жыл бұрын
Because there were a few kingdoms and dynasties with the same name. This is done by historians to distinguish them.
@SantomPh
@SantomPh 2 жыл бұрын
In their lifetime they claimed to be a succesor/revival of the older dynasty or were a precedent of a later, more prominent dynasty of the same name. They used the same name in their era but later had "former" or "later" attached to their name by scholars. One key exemption is "Shu Han" one of the Three Kingdoms that came out of the Han Dynasty's demise. It is literally "New Han" but ended up being a kingdom of its own separate from Han. Hence historians don't call it "Later Han" despite Liu Bei openly claiming to be the continuation of Han. The Han kingdom that appears during the 16 Kingdoms era is called the Hann (two Ns) and the Later Han of the 5 Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period is named as such.

情況與宋代有些相同,原先的政權因為北方被外族攻佔,被迫移向南方,情況直到楊堅建立隋朝,才實現了全國統一的局面。

Your family is very, very old. You ruled China for more than 600 years, but there was a rebellion from the governor of the Zhao region. He was supported by many nobles and provincial governors, and he was able to win, but he did not rule. Rather, he said, “I am just a representative of the Emperor.”

After the fall of Northern Wei, Yuwen tai established the eastern Wei and started a series of Xianbeinisation policies one of which made Xianbei nobles switch back to their Xianbei names and forced Han elites and soldiers to adopt Xianbei customs and surnames, unlike the other Xianbei nobles who just had to switch back to their Xianbei surnames, Li clan of Tang Dynasty and Yang clan of Sui dynasty were many of those Han noble families that were gifted a Xianbei surname by Yuwen Tai because they didn’t had one previously. That’s why after the Yang clan took power and established the Sui dynasty, Yang Jian and other Han nobles (Including the Li clan) switched back to their Han surname but those nobles of Xianbei origins remained with their Xianbei surnames (he also executed all of the members of the Yuwen Xianbei clan).

I like how you ignore the Three kingdoms, Jin Dynasty, 5 barbarian Invasions+Northern Sounthern Kingdoms, because they were done to the death by video games, TV shows and documentary. The Goturk Wars between the Sui and the Tang China can be one of the reasons why Turkey is not fond of China today.

Once again the Sui, like the Qin, seem to unify but not keep it together. It was always the next dynasty that benefited. You also failed to talk about the legacy of the Grand Canal which was another burden of too much too fast that impacted the Sui.
