Chad Li Shimin created the greatest early medieval empire. 58% global GDP combined with advanced military, science, engineering and arts. In addition to those feats, Tang was the most cosmopolitan, meritocratic, and tolerant empire at the time. It was truly an example of what could be achieved by the near perfect combination of charisma, martial prowess, high intelligence and balls of steel.

@@Android11001 a simple google search of tables of historical GDP throughout the world would answer your question. I don't think it is even a controversial statement tbh, like most people in history buff community have kinda agree. But if you want to explore more, I think there are many threads dedicated for that in quora or stackexchange where people assess the details for that claim. I suggest reading those, since they probably can give much better insights than what I possibly can provide. *On the conservative estimates, 30-40 percent also seems plausible for the era.

One of the features of periods of upheaval is that the previous hierarchies and systems are overturned, allowing capable people that normally wouldn't have been able to rise to the top for one reason or another have a chance to seize power for themselves- this is true everywhere and in every time. The defeat of Gallic leaders allowed for the rise of Vercingetorix, who was able to inflict one of the rare defeats on Julius Caesar. Napoleon would have remained a low-ranking artillery officer without the chaos of the French revolution. Henry Tudor would never have had a shot at the throne of England if it wasn't for the Wars of the Roses... The list is very long and covers all of history.

Some can say that ‘Alpha son and Beta dad’ story is a myth and propaganda created and utilized by Li Shimin to promote himself, legitimize his regime , and immortalize his reign in history. Yes. But there is some truth behind the myth ‘Alpha son and Beta dad’ narrative. From the perspective of Character, Li Shimin is such a rare kind of Shining mixed personality that no one can argue when compare to his father, his father is great because of experience and abilities as same as the men from his class and background should have but Li Shimin has more even when compare to his own brothers, for example his ruthlessness, his tolerance and even acceptance towards different opinions that he use to rule his empire, his talents in many subjects. He’s just younger than his father. That’s all. His qualities will make him shine for sure as people in the contemporary period expected that he will become great. That’s one of the reasons why he gained a lot of supporters and successfully practically engineered a coup, killed his brothers/rivals and , with immense support from officials and other influential figures, pressure his father to step down and retire. Many times the men called as Alpha male are also the men who are good at ‘directly’ and ‘indirectly’ promoting themselves , aren’t they? As these events played out, they could become part of his propaganda later. To make every propaganda convincing, there must always be some facts in it. Otherwise, how a propaganda will convince people to buy it as ‘social mainstream accepted narratives’ that help maintain the regime or the position in the regime. And as it turned out, Li Shimin became a brilliant, and successful emperor who open a new golden age for China. From archives by various sources official, non-official, etc. also pointed at the exceptional character of Li Shimin

Hi Bro, I've been looking @ ur vids for quite a while & I really luv ur contents, & I like the way u present ur vids. It's really heartening to see that there're young history enthusiast such as urself who were presenting interesting historical facts or stories to the mass audience, in such a engaging & lighthearted manner. Anyway, back to this vid, although I wld say most of the stuff r historically correct, there r several pts which I dun agree, & thus I wld like to offer my thoughts as follows. No.1: Li Yuan is NO timid pathetic loser as depicted in the vid. In contrast, I think the real Li Yuan is a shrewd, ambitious, hardy & capable leader, who is oso a sympathetic person too. The image of Li Yuan depicted in this vid is the common historical image popularized & featured in the (Old/New) Book of Tang. Even though both books r factual historical texts but it's widely known that Tang Taizong Li Shimin was uber sensitive abt his historical image when he became emperor, & had coerced his court historians to amend some of the historical facts & events, especially those of his father & bros. This fact is widely accepted & recognized by most contemperary scholars & modern days historians. I mean, It prob wldn't help his case if the history depicts that his father & bros were shrewd, ambitious & capable leaders who had contributed immensely to overthrow the Sui dynasty, eradicate the wardlords & unify China, but end up being killed or seconded in the end by a rebellion (Xuan Wu Gate) which by any measure, is a treacherous plot devised to seize power, isn't it? Thus, it makes every sense for Li Shimin to demonize his bros & taint the glorious reputation of his father, & in turn panegyrized & exaggerate his heroic deeds, & take credits for most of the contributions...@ the expense of his father & bros, in order for him to justify his "rights" to ascend the throne, kill his bros in cold blood & be accepted & remembered as a legitimate ruler. Dun get me wrong, I like Tang Taizong, I think he's prob the G.O.A.T emperor in the history of China. Mao was right to place side by side the other 4 great rulers in history, Emperor Shi of Qin, Emperor Wu of Han, Song Taizu & Genghis Khan in his poem 沁园春.雪. Wat I can't agree is the way that he twisted the facts that make it seems like he's the "Brain & Bronze" of the whole Tang organization. As pointed by the title of this vid, the overthrown of the Sui dynasty, eradication of the wardlords & unification of China is very much, a family project, a joint efforts by many heroes of that time, & most importantly, due to a combinations of events. I truely believe Li Shimin is instrumental in the whole thing, but to say that he masterminded the whole thing & did it all (or mostly) by himself, is prepostrous. I can pt out numerous historical facts or evidence which can support my pt abt Li Yuan but I wld prob gotta write another 30-40 lines, which I dun think anybody wld be interested to read :D Alright, No.2: Emperor Yang of Sui is NO loser...well, @ least b4 he fled Loyang in 616 & "self-exiled" himself @ Jiangdu & decides to juz rot there :) History hasn't been forgiving to this man, & quite frankly, it's not as if he dun deserved it, but I think if most ppl r willing to overlook his failures in his later reigns & focus more on his ambitious plans & projects (which were mostly well meaning.....with the exceptions of the incesssant invasions of Goguryeo), I think wat u'll see is a shrewd, intelligent, ambitious man with great foresight. I believe nobody with adequate historical knowledge on that period of time can dispute on the importance of the Grand Canal, the extension & repair of the Great Wall & the establishment of the secondary capital, Loyang. But I dun think many ppl truely understand y did he invested that much efforts into these projects. In fact, all of these 3 projects r closely related to the circumstances & wld hav work wonders for the empire...if they were successfully completed. Let me explain 1 by 1. The Grand Canal is imperative for the empire becos back then the central of the economy of China had gradually shifted frm Changan (Modern day Xi An) to South Eastern regions, arnd the Jiangdu area. Let's not forget China had undergone 300yrs of devastating civil wars & internal strifes b4 the Sui dynasty, & most of these took place in the Northern regions. Fertile farmlands were barrens & vast forests / woodlands were deforested, cities were constantly sacked & pillaged in these regions. Vast swathes of scholars, Han peasants & artisans had alrdy fled South during this period. In the end, most cities in the Southern regions were much more prosperous than those of the North. N this is where the Grand Canal & establishment of Loyang came into place, to reconcile & bridge the burgeonging gaps btwn the North & South. The North can continue to be the administrative capital of the empire, while the South can be the prosperous economy centre. Something like Berlin & Bavaria to the Germans. The extension & repair of the Great Wall was oso important to the empire, due to the intimidating presence of the Western & Eastern Gokturk states, which the 2 Sui Emperors had endeavoured to placate (or manipulate @ times). Both of them were well aware that it wld take time for them to gather sufficient military strength b4 they cld finally get rid of these 2 formidable foes. Thus, it wld be wise to build up a gd defense b4 they managed to do so, & this is where the Great Wall comes into place. Yes yes, I know! He foolishly tried to accomplish all these in juz a short span of time, activating fractions of the whole populations to slog on these mega projects till msny of them died & bankrupting the coffers. I totally cannot argue wif that & I agree he's juz impatient, idiotic & yes, he's a jerk...& a very tyrannical 1! There's NO freaking way his empire, or any empire b4 & after that, can EVER accomplished all these mega projects (+ going into an indeterminable war with a strong country likd Goguryeo), in the lifetime of a single emperor! But I wld oso like to offer my view on this. I'm inclined to believe that Emperor Yang has something of a "Napoleon Complex", of which he is extremely obsessed abt outdoing his father, Emperor Wen, & to clear any rumours of him murdering his father & usurp of the throne. Guess he really had something against his father & he was so desperate that he's willing to do anything & everything fast, in order to prove to everyone that he was the "Greater Yang" in the family. N his obesession with the invasions of Goguryeo, I believe this was his uber competitive nature in play. Let's not forget he was born a Prince & prob had almost everything his way in life. B4 the utter failure in the 1st Goguryeo invasion, the man had almost everything his way, he was successful in almost everything he did, & maybe he really thought Heaven was at his side, so there's nothing he can't do. Thus, even when the 2nd invasions failed, he juz cldn't let it go & he lost it. Oh well, I guess the saying is true, "Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine ur altitude". I can pt out some other pts which directly or indirectly lead to the collapse of the Sui dynasty, but I'm not gonna talk abt them here, which will make this post endless! This is a loonngg read, & I apologized for it if I bored anyone. Ciao...

Li family background probably full of BS to make himself and his new rule more legit. Li family very likely are mixture of ethnic Han and nomadic tribes that were sinicized with Han names. Actually Yang Guang is not an idiot, but he had a mental weakness (created by his father and mother's doting of his elder brother) and the need to prove himself as the best son and the most qualified to rule more so than his older brother (who he and some politicians killed in a plot for succession as ancient rule is that the oldest son takes the throne). Thus he did many grand projects / wars during his rule while disregarding the material and human costs in an attempt to satisfy this need/obsession.

Also, great videos guys. In one of your earlier videos, though, you refer to the Xiongnu as "Proto-Mongolic". As you mentioned in one of your more recent videos, the Xiongnu were indeed a confederacy so we can't really say whether they were Proto-Mongolic, Proto-Turkic or Proto-Yeniseian (like the Jie people). However, due to the fact that the Donghu were Proto-Mongolic via the Xianbei connection, the Book of Zhou's reference to the Ashina clan (the ruling clan of the Tujue or Gökturks) as "Northern Xiongnu" and, as you are also aware, the Oghuz Khagan connection, I'd go for "Proto-Turkic". But anyway, keep up the good work! There is also a folk rock band named after the Tang Dynasty, I hope you fancy them too!

Traditionally, the Longxi Li clan did make those "claims". But it can't be proven. Especially when there are no definite evidence that Lao Zi existed. Some researchers have said that Li Yuan did not even come from the Longxi Li clan. He actually came from a less prestigious Li family from the same area.

The Xiongnu was a confederacy, so there would be mulitple ethnicities there. I think it would be anachronistic to even say what those Xiongnu ethnicities are since the people that we have today are the products of them, instead of the other way around.

I agree. Actually, I could have been clearer: I was referring to the ruling clan of the Xiongnu as (possibly) "Proto-Turkic". That is, if you ask me, the most plausible theory. It's not by any means definitive. Besides, modern Turkic peoples also differ greatly in culture. The Oghuz branch (including modern-day Turks, Azeris and Turkmens), which presumably descended from one of the successor states to the Western Turkic Khaganate (i.e. Western Gökturks, the other half of the Turks mentioned in the video), the Oghuz Yabgu State, was already "quite distinct" from the more eastern Karluks (including modern-day Uzbeks) who mixed with the Uyghurs (according to an 11th century Persianised Turkic scholar, Mahmud al-Kashgari, who lived in modern-day China). These are just the Turkic peoples, imagine how heterogeneous the Xiongnu were! Come to think of it, a video on the Rouran-Avar connection would be nice - Hungarians are big fans of that topic and the migration of nomadic peoples links the "civilised West" to the "civilised East" in the Eurasian continent in a most fascinating way if you ask me.

Alpha son and Beta dad is a myth created by Li Shimin. The guy was good at propaganda and self promotion. Li Yuan was a general of the Sui and combat veteran, also decisive and capable of founding the Tang Dynasty. He just wasn’t as ruthless as his son the Prince of Qin.
@argonerus
@argonerus 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. But there is some truth behind the myth ‘Alpha son and Beta dad’ From the perspective of Character, Li Shimin is such a rare kind of shining mixed personality that no one can argue when compare to his father, his father is great because of experience and abilities as the men from his class and background should have but Li Shimin has more even when compare to his own brothers, for example his ruthlessness, his tolerance and even acceptance towards different opinions that he use to rule his empire, his talents in many subjects. From archives by various sources official, non-official, etc. also pointed at the exceptional character of Li Shimin @NomAnor
