Using a caged coon to train your hound will ruin it, causing the hound to track a coon by sight instead of smell! Try to avoid this pitfall when training your hound so in the end you have a more well versed hound that you will be happy with!

The reason I use a caged coon is to teach my dogs to trail and locate and I don’t let the dogs loose till the coons out of sight and the only reason dogs bark empty cage is cause it has scent on it

Cage coons is like a training collar if not done right you can mess them up but can be a good tool

Thanks I've just started training and only been doing drags. He's 5 months. Valid points, and I don't know of any others around me to get him with any experienced dogs. Thanks, keep looking up!

Cages work when used properly, like any other tool. Drag etc....

Good point, i see so many people use a cage and it just dont make sense.

That’s a fact man!!! Most of the good hounds that I have owned won’t even look at a cage raccoon!!!! But I have seen some that will burn a cage up and couldn’t tree one in the wild at all!!!

I will show a young dog a coon one time only if I have no older dogs to start with it just so when it comes across the track it has an idea of what it's tracking,, you are correct, a poodle will bark at a cage

I’m not very experienced but I showed my dog a caged coon one time just to get him fired up cause he was young and had never took interest in a hide, put him up where he couldn’t see it, cut the coon loose, hid the cage back in the truck and cut him loose on the track, would any problems come out of that?

Perfect way to get one going most hounds have seen a caged coon regardless of what people say and if they say they haven't the old dog they are training there pup with has

I’ve always just used a fresh skin on the ground and up in a tree to train. It’s always worked for my.

I have seen my dog bay on a empty cage but the cage had just had a coon in it and she had the sent of the coon and would leave the trap

lots of people trying to sell bs dogs this way. and watch out for the tree dog video where you have no idea what the dogs treeing but he sounds good. Got me one of those. Remember people who coonhunt dont get rid of a good dog. like your videos and appreciate you.

What if ur dog won't hunt with other dogs to him with other dog nd he go away from that dog doin his own thing but never trees

If he's running track eventually he'll tree, I have had to hunt several pups without an old hound, takes a little time and a lot of patience, but they turned out really nice

xAKAxWILDTURKEY pups turn out a lot better if u have the patience to just keep hunting them by their self!! They make nicer independent hounds

How do I make my dogs not bark in the cage trying to find everything I have 10 hunting dogs two dogs parts all the time the rest of the dogs to bark it’s something comes in yard like a coon possum or deer I had neighbors called the cops all the time about the dogs barking how do I stop my dog from barking in the cage

Get you a quality nobark collar. I like the ones Sportdog brand makes. Just be sure never leave a nobark collar on a dog more than 24 hrs at a time.

I’ve got a new plott pup that I just picked up today. I get your point but I have no finished dog to run with and I’ll show him one when he gets a little older and let him get the smell on his nose and then turn it out and let him run the hot track or try and run it. The hit track and short track is the point. After he trees one caged coon that a blistering bigot track then it’s never again but seeing one won’t hurt him. Don’t this for 15 years and I have seen some real hardwood hammers develop. Biggest mistake is running a young dog with company before they finish out there self. I’ve seen more “ me to” digs from this than I ever have from seeing caged coons.

I'll have to disagree my grandad hunted for 60 yrs had some of the nicest hounds around,hunted and won a world hunt probably when you was a baby with a blue dog called Craigs "Rocky" he would beat every dog that ran with him. I've watched that same blue dog bay at a cage coon with a bunch of young dogs and that's how all the old timers did it because it flat out works if and i mean if you understand how to train a dog right on a cage you never let him off the leash, keep him off the cage, always have an old dog with a young dog. There nose puts them at the tree but if they learn to hate what there treeing then they will work harder to put it up a tree. My 2 cents been at it a long time.
