I don't mind an unsharpened knife, as long as it's easily sharpenable. GECs edges arrive a bit toothy and need some work on the stone/strop before I consider them ready for use. I'm more concerned about fit and finish issues which I can't rectify, and blade play most of all. This was a really enjoyable and informative video thank you Logan. Like you said, there are grounds for hope. It also serves to increase my respect and admiration for what Bill Howard is achieving with GEC even further.

Yeah I'd rather see a bad edge as long as it's fixable than some other QC issues. I often find GEC edges to be overly thick. But yeah they are on their own level. I hope Cooper catches up.

I enjoyed watching this video. Always have respected your videos for telling the truth without coming across as negative. You can see from Coopers first few designs to his last few, improvements have been made but still have a ways to go especially if they are matching GEC retail prices already. I have not heard from Cooper since last summer but I hope they are still making knives and doing well.

Thanks for the video, Knife Thoughts. I too am hoping Cooper Cutlery in Winchester, OH can overcome all of the challenges of a start-up business, labor issues in 2023 America, aged equipment, etc. .... to possibly resurrect the Schatt & Morgan brand to compete with GEC, premium Case, and premium Buck traditionals.

I didn't talk about the aged machinery as much as I meant to. My understanding is the Queen machinery had not been kept in good working order since Bill Howard left in 2006 and wasn't in a state that would make it all that helpful for manufacturing premium knives.

Thank you for an informative video. Despite your concerns you delivered an honest and thoughtful review pointing out the good and not so good. If lessons have been learned as it seems they have and there is an upward trajectory on quality then here’s hoping future releases stand up strongly against competitive brands.

Enjoyed your “knife thoughts” as always. Tough to make these kinda videos, but appreciated by us. Like everything else, different manufactures make different qualities for different markets and buyers. I believe the Big Chief line was kinda like a Chevy work truck and never meant to make the person looking for a Roll Royce happy. However, they are knives and all should come with a serviceable edge out of the box.

Yeah I agree. I think the second one I showed is a good knife for the price they were. I just don't like the blade shape. The first one wasn't acceptable at any price basically.

Thanks again, If they purchased old machines you have to work out the kinks. Machinists have to get familiar with them, tool & die makers might need to retool, it a process.

I have a Weed & Co hunter and it has some major issues. Terrible walk & talk, bad fit and finish, and sizeable cracks in the bone covers. I really hope that they can get it together. I would love to see another quality American slipjoint maker. I am not holding my breath but here's hoping.

It would be nice to see them make good quality sharp knives, I have a battle axe hunter it has a really weak back spring in the open position and is not even sharpened, but I'd like to see them build quality knives, thanks for the video

On that big chief, would that weird edge be considered “micro serrations” maybe?

They should have gone with a traditional motif. They could have played around with the name and lean into the weed motif with a few patterns. Like a pipe knife gets the leaf shield and green bone and a bag in the tube, but otherwise just make traditional knives.

Queen has a special place in my heart being my first knife handed down to me. but I don't actually understand who's representing queen? Or are they both I guess?

Queen the brand is owned by Blue Ridge / SMKW (as well as Queen City). Schatt & Morgan (and apparently Big Chief, Weed & Co, and Battle Axe) are owned by Cooper Cutlery.

Bluegrass does. They make a lot of knives for a lot of brands. But they are very secretive.

Just by their appearance, they look like a bunch of VERY inexpensive pocketknives from China. I hope they will get better in time.
