I swapped from KO2 to AT3 XLT a few years back. I really noticed the improvement in wet weather grip and noise on the road. The big surprise was off road - nothing in it. Same feel and result on the moderate rock steps and crawls in the state forests and national parks around Sydney. The Coopers felt marginally better in sand, and the BFGs marginally better in mud. My new truck comes with KO2s from the factory and seriously considering selling them and buying a set of AT3s

the at3's dont last in rough conditions. i had 2 blowouts in 2 different tires and a flat in a 3rd in under 10k miles. when i was on the pipelines hotshotting equipment i tried all the major brands. the at3 lastest the shortest amount of time and gave me the most issues. theyre fine for farting around in some gravel but if youre working them hard off road the blow. never had one issue from the ko2. the ko2s ended up being the only all terrain tire i tried that i could wear all the way down to the designated depth before replacing without a blowout or a flat. driving around town yeah the at3 are maybe a little quieter but..they are not tough tires.

I’ve had BFG KO2 & AT3’s on a Toyota Hilux & VW Amarok. In my opinion and being from Ireland where we get a lot of rain I found the BFG dangerous on wet roads, excellent off road. But for an all terrain tyre I think the AT3 is much better and can perform equally as good off-road when tyre pressure is lowered. AT3 is amazing at throwing water off to side.

I prefer the Coopers because the silica rubber creates a lot of traction and BFGs seem hard and seem to slide in wet conditions when you need brakes. Plus the coopers are a lot cheaper. I’ve gotten about 70,000 miles out of my coopers.

I run the Cooper AT3 on my daily driver excellent on the hiway and good offroad with 60,000 tread wear. I have the XLT on my Ford F250 diesel. I have heard from a number of reviewers that the KO2s get ground to dust on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, especially diesels. At $400 a piece, that's too expensive to bear. I've also used several sets of BFG AT on Chevy Tahoes and Toyota 4Runners. On dirt and rocky trials, the KO2s are great. On snow they are food. On wet and torrential rains, they suck. The design can't evacuate the water out from the sides or longitudinally so it hydroplanes quickly. The XLTs are good in snow, good in dirt and rocky trials and good in rain, providing good water evacuation. They ride as quietly as Michelin AT2 and as rumblefree. No tracking or tramlining. Good rode comfort. And at 40,000 mes I've gotten almost 6,000 miles per each 1/32 inch and still have about 9/32 left. That's about 36,000 more miles if I push it thst far. If I live in the southwest, I coukd reasonably try it. But being in South Central Idaho where we get snow, I would change before then.

I had the Cooper tire on my F350 and just finished up over 70,000 miles on that tire. it is quiet and provides excellent traction under a wide range of conditions. However, there’s not enough tread left for this winter. I will be getting another set of Cooper tires within the month.

I have the BFG KO2’s in Australia and mainly do beach driving in a Toyota Prado. I find the more aggressive side lugs really help when you start digging into soft sand, the side walls add traction. However KO2’s are horrendous in wet weather, very noisy, and suck fuel, which is why I have another set of wheels I swap out for normal on road driving.

Yes, for on road, Cooper AT3 is the closet you can get staying in A/T category. You might want to go for 4S as well instead of LT or XLT, as they have more size options and are slightly less aggressive as well.

Hi Mate! This is a raging debate in the 4Runner forum about KO2 slipping in the rain. Some say they personally experienced KO2 slipping in the rain and hate them for this reason but at the same time there are quite a few people like me who have never had any problems with them in the rain and I’ve been running them on my vehicles for the last 20 years. It’s a real head scratcher why some hate them and other love them. As for noise I find them no worse than similar tires. As for sucking fuel, yeah I agree, not the most fuel efficient tire. I do about 85% driving on road and 15% off road. It’s a great compromise tire. Drives great on highways and at the same time it can handle the vast majority of road conditions. By the way I love Australia and the people! I’ll be there next week enjoying a few pints of Furphy at the local pub! Cheers!

@@awcowa2259 it’s all relative. I had a Landrover Discovery that came standard with KO2’s. For about three years I thought the handling was pretty shit in the wet until the tyres wore out and I replaced them with Pirelli Scorpions. KO2’s are great off-road, but compared to the set of highway tyres I have on for daily use they are very poor on road. However I would not want to venture very far off the beaten track with those highway tyres. Everything is a compromise. If you can afford two sets of tyres and the effort to swap them you can have the best of both worlds. I have got it down to about 20 minutes in my garage to swap the tyres out.

I've had ATs for years and years...some were used (back in early 90s) and some new. Like them a lot. Got AT3 XLTs on my 1970 Ford Bronco a couple years ago on advice by tire dealership when I requested ATs. They seem more quiet, have enough of an aggressive tread, and look great that I'm comfortable it was a great choice. Not off-road or snow much, so not concerned (although I'm sure four-wheel drive and factory posi front and back will have more impact). Price looks about the same today for each tire, although maybe there was some discount for Coopers when I bought them. I'm sure you can't go wrong with either tire, but the AT3s might be more quiet on the road if that's the majority of your driving.

After reading some of the reviews that seemed questionable based on my experience I decided to add my experience with these tires. Here in western PA I drive mostly on road and my off road is farm fields, empty, loaded and towing. Tires are 10 ply. I liked the directional grooves on the AT3 for lightly covered roads at interstate speeds. However the KO2 with their larger openings around the lugs were almost equal in performance. At slower speeds or in water, snow or slush at slow or higher speeds the KO2’s performed much better. The KO2’s also self cleaned at a much slower speed providing better grip. The AT3 are a quieter highway tire but the KO2’s are not that much louder. Both towed well with KO2’s better in adverse conditions. With truck loaded I liked the KO2’s better. AT3’s had a better mileage life before I felt they needed replaced by about 10,000 miles. For my use the KO2’s were a better tire.

@jerryh4983 It's really valuable to hear such detailed observations comparing Cooper AT3 and BF Goodrich KO2! Your experiences highlight the importance of matching the tire with specific usage conditions. It sounds like, for your needs, the KO2's extra grip and performance in adverse conditions outweighed the AT3's additional mileage lifespan.

The Cooper Discoverer AT3 tends to perform well for drivers who spend most of their time on-road but still require dependable performance in adverse weather conditions like snow and rain. Given your location in the mountains and the climate conditions you've described, the AT3 could be a suitable choice. It's designed to offer a balance between off-road capability and refined on-road manners. However, the BF Goodrich KO2 also has a strong reputation for its snow and wet road handling. I would suggest considering the terrain you encounter most frequently and how each tire's characteristics align with those conditions.

Again...the truck is not abused, I do not brake hard, nor do BS stuff like you may see on KZfaq. And is not the only vehicle I own, so it's not a daily vehicle. Well maintained and serviced. As a Discount Tire salesman, I'd go with the BFG as the better All-Terrain tire. The softer rubber on the Cooper has it's advantages, but one major disavantage which was not covered here: It is much more susceptable to "cupping" where the tire has many high and low tread areas, and a bumpy awful ride as a result. I see this a lot on the Coopers but almost never on KO2s. The Cooper is in most respects the better on-road tire, but given that these are All-terrain tires, the KO2 fits that bill far better, it is the better all-around tire. Then again, many people buying all terrain and Mud terrain tires will never touch a spec of dirt, in which case I'd buy the Cooper. (I'm looking at you, Jeep people.)😂
@comparethetire
@comparethetire 7 ай бұрын
Your insight as a Discount Tire salesman is invaluable, Joseph! The cupping issue with softer rubber tires like the Cooper is indeed a crucial point. While Coopers perform exceptionally on-road, the durability and even tread wear of the BFG KO2s make them a more reliable all-terrain option. Your point about many all-terrain and mud-terrain tire buyers not actually going off-road is well-taken - in such cases, the Cooper could be a more suitable choice for on-road comfort.

Tire tread cupping is an indication of poor or inadequate shocks on the vehicle. Proper rotation and balance can't be stated enough when it comes to keeping the outer edges from wearing and causing noise. You can always tell the direction a tire was rolling by rubbing your hand over the front tires edges, they will be 'higher' on the leading edges. This causes the noise, cross rotate fronts to the rear and rears straight forward to correct over time. Three vehicles in the past with KO2's and no problems but agree on subpar wet performance. Where KO2's excel is off-road on rocky terrain. Considering Coopers next time.

@@comparethetire I put a set of 32" MT Baja Boss AT's on my lifted 96 Jeep Cherokee and those things are amazing! They grip everything and are surprisingly quiet and handle well on the pavement. I’ve seen too many blown KO2’s that caused fender damage or accidents. I’ll never buy them. I have used different models from Cooper on trucks and cars. I’m used to running ko2’s all year round on my ram in eastern Canada. I just had the Cooper At3 4s installed and they are terrible. My stock goodyear wra were better than these. Worst tire in winter I’ve ever owned. Good in dry and wet but not any use at all in winter. In any amount of snow, can’t stop and can’t steer. My truck just slides around out of control. I am in Alberta and years back had the prior series of BFG all terrain and they did better then the AT3 coopers I bought as the replacement tire. The Cooper AT3 is a more quiet tire then that older BFG AT but on ice the Coopers are total shit from my experience ( I've run winter tires for years so fortunately haven't had to use the coopers on ice very much, I would have been in so many accidents or dead by now had I relied on the coopers to keep me on the road !. Not sure how much better this "XLT" version is as they could be a little different then the coopers I have, mine react just like a true mud tire on ice, like skates.

I think I'd go with the K02-- I'm out in the country and we get WET snow here in winter-- and sometimes off in mud- although not that much... but AT3 would be great for mostly street or RAIN driving. Ive pulled bolts, nails, screws out of the tread without having to repair them, no leaks. Ive scuffed the sidewalls on extreme trail rides and never had a gash/roll off/cut that caused concern. I have to disagree with this info. I have owned a lot of BFG all terrains in the past... mostly the original KO's, and I can tell you they are at LEAST 3X better than the coopers. I just mounted a set of the Coopers on my '15 F150, and there is almost NO traction on wet roads. Hell, the 70% worn-out factory original GoodYear HIGHWAY TREADS had by FAR better wet traction. I was towing my camper this past weekend in the rain, and these tires were spinning at every intersection with almost no throttle as if I were on ice. Scary experience... Once, on an entrance ramp at 50+ mph, and less than 1/3 throttle, they cut loose.... I will NOT be buying any more Cooper tires! BFG for the win. I have never had them act like this. Maybe I will go back to the Goodyear HT's. They were very quiet, gotgood fuel economy, and in Dec 2017, got me through 35+ inches of snow in Erie, PA (yeah, I too was surprised by that...) They were 1+ years old at the time, and I thought I would be "sunk" without a good set of AT or winter tires... they proved me wrong, & blasted right through the stuff. The Cooper ATs I have on now are useless.. My wife is scared to drive our truck in the wet... I hope they will be good in deep snow, but it's hard to imagine they will be, based on how terrible they are on wet pavement. At this point, I think I would trade them on a 50% worn-out set of BFG's!

Thanks for sharing. If you listen to blabbering carefully, you'll know where KO2 is better and where it's not. That's the whole point of a comparison review. There are a lot of on and off-road factors you need to consider, and a tire cannot be better in all of them.

@@comparethetire better on rocks and mud. Equal in snow and coopers are leaps and bounds better on wet and dry pavement. Coopers may get noisy as they wear but are still quieter than bfg. Plus you can get them for $80 a tire less if you shop around...
