Aaron Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' was one of a series of fanfares requested from various American composers by conductor Eugene Goossens. These were to be played at the start of each concert during the Cincinnati Orchestra's 1942-43 season and it is Copland's offering that has retained a regular place in the the repertoire.
The performance seen here opened the 2000 Proms Season In London's Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis's direction. It is being published here on 14 July 2017 to mark the first night of the Proms 2017. It was followed immediately by Stokowski's orchestration of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor ... • Sir Andrew Davis condu...

Gorgeous performance, in a great venue w/incredible aesthetics & acoustics. Equally impressive as the backdrop in 1956 version of The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Thanks for the comments below about the audio quality. This was recorded direct off the 'live' television transmission in the summer of 2000. Listening to it again, I'm only sorry that there was some slight atmospheric signal interference at the time. The Royal Albert Hall, as will be seen from the various camera shots, is a huge place seating around 5,000 people. You will see the conductor at the end thanking the extra brass players who were situated way up in the topmost gallery. The percussionists were excellent too! Anyway, the hall is ideal for this spectacular kind of music, so I'm glad everyone likes it!.

I do not think the Bernstein version had the best audio enginesring. Or maybe it was the KZfaq transfer. It sounded slightly flat which is not the fault of the conductor or orchestra.

A massive orchestra, 97% of which sits there quietly, while the tympanists & horn players revel in glory.

They then went on without a pause, apart from the audience clapping, straight into the Bach-Stokowski Toccata and Fugue in D minor ... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbloa8-Irdzad6s.html Andrew Davis followed in Stokowski's footsteps by conducting without a baton.

A memorable performance. Too many audience shots. The brass and percussion sections were the ones playing. The audience was just sitting there. What were they thinking?

Musica mundana. There are pieces of music that are not from this world. The composer was only a tool. He was the midwife for a harmony of another world. He helped her to come to us. A composer makes the music of the spheres audible. The idea of the music of the spheres already existed in ancient Greece. It is the musica mundana.
