HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

Good one big D! I’ve tried melting dust before too and it’s crazy how much dross there is to skim. I have a theory that it’s actually oxides forming because of the large surface area of the small particles. I think if you could heat and melt without oxygen present you would get a better yield. So a crucible with a tight fitting lid and a little charcoal thrown in to use up the oxygen. It’s an experiment I’ve been intending to try for awhile. One of us will try it eventually. 😂

Use smaller amounts of dust to start the melt with a lid on the crucible then add more dust gradually to the liquid will help cut down on the dross
@dansands8140
@dansands8140 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct, it's oxides. It's probably already too late to prevent their formation after the metal is dust, however. Copper (I) oxide will decompose to oxygen and copper at 1800C, so you could get it up there and burn off the dross and recover the copper. I'm actually not sure how possible that is with these furnaces.

Nah. It's not expensive. He's got everything to build an electromagnet there in his garage. A coil of wire, a large steel core, and a battery charger it all it takes. OK, BigStack. Here's how to build one. Wind several hundred turns of insulated wire (14-18 AWG) around a large steel core. Leave some lead length at each end of the winding. Cover the core with a ziplock (or make it fit into a plastic cup or something). Attach the ends of the core to a battery charger and you have an electromagnet. Bonus! Put one of those pushbuttons you find in an industrial enclosure in line with the coil. Contacts in those switches should be able to handle 20 Amps. You only need a 5 amp charger.

An interesting experiment to run to possibly get rid of the casting imperfections, would be to heat the graphite mold to a cherry red then pour the copper into it. Those molds you have appear to have smooth sides and bottoms, so why do most of the pours end up with those imperfections in the sides and the bottom? I would think that they would be as smooth as the mold. If it's because of impurities, is there a way to remove all of the impurities before you pour?

@@MrTohawk *nods* from what i know about metallurgy all of this is accurate, also if i have this right it is very hard to get a perfect bar unless you have some fancy industrial grade equipment, or atleast with some it is aluminum seems to be easy if you ignore the dent that forms due to cooling shrinkage edit a solution could be hotter metal so further above the melting point, and the pour, flow rate, where it lands in the mold ect
@TheRisskee
@TheRisskee 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of it is shrinkage and some of it is from boiling that puts pits from the bubbling in the bottom. Sometimes a tiny bit of moisture isn't burned out of the mold so it'll pop and leave a cavity. Bigstack just a idea from someone who doesn't melt but it seems like when you go to pour the molten metal and it hardens and you have that gap on the bottom that you dislike. Maybe it's from when you preheat your molds and that spot heats up more than the rest? Just a thought it looks to be in the general area all the time, try evenly heating the mold and see if you can get it to pour right more consistently

How do you get a bar with a perfectly smooth surface, no freeze lines or anything? Do you have to cast a larger version first, then trim it down?

Its just experience, using the right mold, keeping the copper at the right tempeture, heating the mold before pouring etc, but no he doesnt cast it large then trim it down

Two questions as someone who has never used propane before: 1-Why does the gas bottle freeze? 2-Why is it an issue?
@brokemage1395
@brokemage1395 2 жыл бұрын
1. The propane tank freezes due to massive amounts of gas being released from the container. The release lowers the temperature inside the tank. 2. That is a problem because it can slow or stop the flow of propane from the tank. Putting it in water warms it because the water is warmer than the tank and water has a resistance to temperature changes.

Liquids expanding and turning into a gas usually causes tons of heat loss (kind of like how sweating cools us off). If it freezes, it doesn't want to flow. At least that's what I heard my subconscious say while I was dissociating while looking into a mirror.

@@DGF2099 Propane is not as bad for this as butane. Propane has a boiling point of minus 42 C, but butane boiling point is only minus one C. I remember a butane camping stove being almost unusable in cold weather.

What a morning, rain and 57 degrees (14 C ) here in Michigan. For the first time ever instead of watching a BigstackD video within an hour of its release I'm 5 hours late. ( slept like a baby though) It was almost like I knew it would be a struggle to get that copper bar into the proper form without deformities throughout! But in the end it is BigstackD and the copper bar emerged eloquent and Lustrous Polished to perfection! Another great melt Video! Have a great day everyone!
