Annealed copper can be shaped or formed. But for most end products, we want the copper to be hard or ridged. This video shows a few simple ways that copper can be hardened.

You probably love your craft, George, but you're in the wrong business, my friend. You should be doing voice-overs for movies and documentaries. You have nothing to envy from the likes of Morgan Freeman or Don LaFontaine (RIP). Your video is awesome, too. No noises, annoying music, shaky or out-of-focus camera shots and, of course, impeccable audio. Nicely done.

Perhaps, you could do BOTH (like you said about coppe: you could have it BOTH ways!).I'm thinking about retiring after 40+ years at engineering, and would love to just tinker at DIY many things at home. But after teaching a short course on engineering, several alumni and the course coordinator told me I had a "terrific" easyness to teach, so now I'm contemplating to dedícate myself to try to teach engineering courses instead of working daily 8-to-5 at an engineering firm. that way I would apply my engineering knowledge and ALSO have time for my hobbies and enjoying them too. Perhaps you could do the same: take advantage of your wondeful voice and presence to do videos, and keep working at your workshop, do both things.

regardless of the chances of you seeing this being very low, i will thank you anyway, cause i'm looking to see if i can use the hardware store copper sheet i got to make some ruling pens. this will definitely help me cause im only used to working with steel and such. Is there a way to harden copper without hammering it? - I'm tinning old copper pans and bowls and they're getting soft after i've heated them up and added tin, which makes them difficult to use properly in the kitchen.. I've thought of, but not tried, to heat them up in the oven and leaving them in there to cool afterwards (a slow temper, if it was steel..).. maybe that could work? Thanks in advance!

Hello George. I need to maintain the shape of my copper with out distorting it like work hardening would do. I am using 10 or 12 gauge copper wire and rolling it into a spring shape on a dowel and then clipping it into 1" long springs shapes about 1/2" in diameter. I need the surface of the wire to remain smooth but to stiffen up the spring shape to withstand slight dropping mixing in a pale by hand or say shaking the pale or bucket filled with these spring shapes. Small amounts of deformation would by fine I just need them to hold there spring shape.Thanks for any info.

Not exactly sure of what you are wanting to do. If I understand; you want to stiffen the copper wire without distorting the integrity of the spring. My only suggestion is while the wire is still on the dowel, gently roll it across a hard surface. A hard surface could be wood or metal. If you do it gently, you will not mar the surface of the wire. Repeated rolling will stiffen the copper.

Very interesting, could you help please. I once made a walking stick that concealed a adapted samurai blade that I sharpened the back edge to match the natural curve of the front of the samurai blade. It was a fantastic piece but the handle and sheath were made of aluminium to make it look like any normal walking stick. The only difference was it was a oval shape to assist with gripping and locking the sword into the sheath. I'd now like to make a hardened copper Chinese flute/dizi , hard enough to use as a staff. But also hiding a sword that again can be turned into a flute. So my basic first question - how can I harden the copper tube without hammer marks. It's more a demonstration piece for tourists, when I'm on the beach practicing my Tàijíquán in my bright white Tai chi Fu/uniform. I no longer want a separate staff & multiple swords. Just one item and a hand fan in a pocket on the leg of my Tai chi fu. "Guess who grew up watching Kung Fu with David Carridine ?"🙏☯️

Mr. Goehl, Can Copper be hardened enough to put a knife edge on a piece and it remain sharp for a respectable amount of time?

By hammering you can get the copper very hard. When it is too hard it will be brittle. Knife edge: Filing or grinding will achieve a knife edge, How long it will stay sharp is dependent on what you will be cutting. If you are using it as a letter opener, it will stay sharp for quite awhile. If you are using it to cut a hard material, the sharpness won't last long.

George Goehl thank you sir for your speedy reply. I have an Idea to make a nice sushi/meat slicer for my son and his girl. He makes Texas BBQ Brisket almost as good as me. I think my new idea will be to split the Copper and Tig weld a piece of 01 tool steel with Silicon Bronze for the knife edge. I will probably forge some Makume Gane (Bronze, Nickel and Copper) for handle embelishments and an Ebony handle. Maybe I can do a serving fork, a chopping knife, a paring knife and make a wooden box and give it to them as a set. I will be watching many of your videos from now on since I have found your channel. Thank you for sharing.

Sorry, I didn't see your comment. Yes, you can quench brass. But, brass is an alloy, so different brass alloys will react differently.

I'd have to have a little more information. Like the thickness of the copper and the shape. Obviously it is not a flat shape or you could use the pipe or a rolling pin. Let me know and i'll try to help.

@@897473 Well I got one: I made myself a Freddy Krueger glove all out of copper (except the blades of course, those are steel, and I mean the literal designs from the original and remake movies), without any softening prior (try shaping the fingers all by hand and pliers, boy that was tough!). But the welder whom soldered the blades and the rings underneath the fingers left the copper fingers all soft (due to the soldering heat I presume). Obviously none of these "solutions" works for a shape one cannot hammer/roll away because it's already shaped (and assembled). So how exactly can we harden a copper shaped object that we simply cannot hammer or roll over?

I don't know of any other way rather than using pressure ( hammering). I'm sure you are not the first that has run into that problem, so you may have to do some research on the web for a solution.

Teena Stewart Teena, I used to have a deal with a warehouse which has kept me well stocked with copper. I haven't bought copper in years so I am not a good source today. What I would suggest is the video I did on "Buying Copper". You can find it here: gsegmedia.com/?page_id=2877

+Teena Stewart There are a number of suppliers for high end copper sheet. Contenti.com, Riogrande.com, Mettaliferous.com. You can sometimes get copper sheet from a metal scrap yard or metal supplier if you live in a city with a good industrial base. I used to live in Oakland Ca, I could find ANYTHING in that city. I know live outside Chicago and have to order online and have things shipped. One reason to order from one of the places I suggested is that their products are consistent and the metal is high quality. There are many additives to most metals you buy, and it depends on what you will be using it for. I make jewelry, so I need my metals to have the same range of additives - which I get from these places. So the sterling will be consistent and I won't see a difference in color from one piece to the next. You can get copper, brass, nugold, sterling, argentium sterling, silver filled, gold filled, gold, etc. from all these places. A good reference for getting started with finer metal work is Art Jewelry or Lapidary Journal magazines. Good luck.

+Teena Stewart Charlotte has sheet metal suppliers. Just google 'Charlotte North Carolina sheet metal suppliers. But the suppliers I listed are good as well. As long as you don't need really large sheets. The local places may only sell wholesale though - if you have a resale number, which you get from the state.
