Hey everyone! Since 2017, Lincolnshire police have deployed specialist drone operators to support policing efforts across the county. Now evolved to use cutting edge drone technology, operators are seamlessly integrated into local police units. In today’s video, we are joined by Kevin Taylor, Chief Pilot and Flight Safety Manager for Lincolnshire police to talk about this key role and how drones are having a positive and vital role in modern policing.

Extremely well done video. This is what the drone community really needs to combat negative news publicity. To often the media spins a narrative that drones are piloted by creepy peeping toms who are spying on people. Most of the drone pilots I know are just out flying around and having a good time. We see what the birds see. It's good to finally see a high quality video about how drones are being used in public safely. Featured was a very expensive high end drone with all the bells and whistles. However, your local hobbyist with a descent quality drone can volunteer to be on a call list for the purpose of responding to eyes in the sky missions for local police and fire departments. We might only have a camera drone and maybe it can zoom, but they can be used for early detection until the police or fire department can arrive. Most DJI drones can also live stream. So that gives the authorities a little information before they even get on scene. A long time ago I worked as a Firefighter and later, a Police Officer. I worked in a small department in Alabama. We had no budget for helicopters and our small city would not justify the cost of such a craft, So if a criminal dipped into the woods, he was pretty much gone. But if we would have had this technology back in my day, we would have invested in a drone like the one featured in this video. We did have K9's so, having a thermal drone would have allowed us to track the suspect straight to his location. The K9 dog's were very good at flushing out the suspects if they could get close enough. How I wish we had these when I served. It would have been a game changer. Great Video! Cheers!

My man. Check out Zipline drone company. Just one example but it shows that "it may only be a camera drone" is a VAST underestimation of what can be done with a small electric motor a battery and a pcb.... and maybe a camera.

An excellent video, it makes a change to see how a drone can be used in the right hands. Most of us can only dream of having a drone like that. I like the police officer said he was first introduced to the safety of the vulnerable people and then to catch criminals in the act or after the act maybe it would be nice to see similar interaction with the police are the drone users, and perhaps then everyone will realise that drone users aren't the bad guys.

I don’t think he is a police officer, it said police staff on his shoulder so must be a civil role . I know west midlands police has a full time drone unit

That was great 👍 I saw my first police drone last night. Was interested to know more of them and this told me! Funnily enough I live in Lincolnshire too. Made me laugh because the operator must have seen an old woman with a trowel full of slugs and snails looking up in wonder at midnight! So interesting thanks 😊

Watching this while a local police helicopter scans the fields at the end of the road . I'm wondering how much money would have been saved by them using a drone instead and how that chopper could have been attending something more important .

Hey Shaun! Yes, the use of drones can be a great cost saver and as you state free up the helicopter. Both of course have a vital role. I know in counties such as Lincolnshire it can be even more of an advantage as the NPAS base covering the county is so far away!

Now that the US congress appears to be moving forward with a DJI ban with extra fuel added by the balloon incident it is going to be interesting to see what happens with UK fire and police ops if the UK follows suit. It will be a pity because rescue robotics feel hamstrung by the regs already. Although Police units like this are doing a fantastic job well done all.

A DJI ban will only exacerbate the issue. It wont stop anyone from getting the stuff. Just drive the price and the "cool" factor through the roof. China banned bitcoin, how did that work out for them...

The local thieves are using these drones to scan the estate for what they can nick off you. Had 3 masked guy’s with a huge white cctv drone hovering above my home. Probably looking for my bikes that I’ve had to move.

All excellent, justified, use of drones but I worry about 'scope creep'. Devon & Cornwall are heading that way with their new initiative to use drones in traffic enforcement "from 4 miles away". Soon it could be Councils scanning streetscapes looking for some other minor (but revenue generating) infringement. Derbyshire tried drones for enforcement of Covid restrictions. UK policing is by consent (or at least is said to be). I believe that consent will vanish if drone and similar technology is used for essentially heavy handed enforcement of minor, non threatening, matters. There needs to be a National Police Drone Policy developed so that we all know the limits and have assurance that drone use is 'proportionate'. (along with CCTV Facial Recognition)

I have something coming up on the D&C work, and scope creep is something that concerns me too. We asked WMP about their work in areas around antisocial operations. There perhaps needs to be some forethought into when and who looks at how drones are used by authorities.

@crisnmaryfam7344 because all DJI drone footage through the fly app is recorded by DJI in China. How do you think Police obtain flight information when a drone is used irresponsibly and then need to track the owners ? ....... they contact DJI and ask them because they re ors ALL drone flight activity and data by the device serial number. So you see, they can see what our jolly police force are doing too. Why do you think DJI products are being banned in the USA ?
