Copplestone Castings 10mm Fantasy (Middle-earth) Miniatures

My initial order of Copplestone Castings 10mm (Fantasy Lord of the Rings) Miniatures have arrived for my Battle of Five Armies Project, I take a look and talk about how well they might work and fit in with the existing Games Workshop BOFA Plasitcs.

I also have a pretty fair number of these, and really love them. They're actually a very good match for the printed miniatures from Excellent Miniatures in Germany, which are based on the GW concepts of orcs, goblins, and elves. My own plans are to make an elven based set of armies for Iceland, and then fight out campaigns between various small elven kingdoms based on Icelandic maps, with goblins and trolls occupying the mountainous central area.. You probably already know that Icelanders view their their elves with some affection.

I love some of the miniatures on Excellent Miniatures. Funnily enough I’ve chatted to a few people now who have said that the Copplestone miniatures scale well with GW metal BoFA and Warmaster, I’m not surprised they scale with other 3rd party as well, seems like it’s the BoFA miniatures on the smaller side. I love your project plans, that’s a fantastic idea.

All the BoFA metals were slightly larger than the plastics too - the Copplestone ones match them perfectly, so much that if you remove the plumes from the Copplestone Royal Guard they're almost identical to the GW Elf Cavalry ;) My plan is to use the BoFA rules and expand the lists to add extra troop types for the War of the Rings battles

Ah thank you for that, I had no idea, that’s really good to know. I’ve never held and of the metal BoFA miniatures to compare them, I’m assuming they matched the Warmaster range then. Are you planning writing your own lists? I’ve never played any of the sets of rules, only skim read them, so not sure how much difference there is.

Really lovely minis. Makes me want to look into making a Black Powder Epic Battles Middle Earth variant. Now there's an idea...

Warmaster/BoFA is very similar to Black Powder in many ways, you may not need to adapt BP. If you did prefer BP still, then Hail Caesar would maybe be a better starting point.

10mm Helm's Deep and Pelennor Fields are on my bucket list to do as projects. You should check out Knucklebone miniatures patron. They have some nice STL files for orcs and trolls in 10mm.

Also take a look at Dark Realms patron. About a year back they made a 28mm stl for Helms Deep.

I'm currently working on a 28mm (more like 25mm really) helms deep but now that I've seen these I'm going to end up playing it at 10mm so it looks way bigger and more epic.

Was very excited to see this on my feed. I got a set of the pendraken high elves coming(cheers for the tip). Think I'll do a mix of cobblestone and pendraken for evil

@@MiniatureRealms Will definitely do one. Still deciding on my evil force. The mounted ringwrath you have looks ace so will definitely need some cobblestone stuff.

Hi , you could use the middle earth mass battle system by GW war of the ring, all you'd have to do is convert it to cm, the only thing that could pose a problem is casualty removal but you could mark the bases with dice to show hits .

there's also Kallistra, big range of 12mm metal fantasy, medieval & ancients under the banner Hordes & Heroes - they even have their own ruleset for free (though I've never played it). Plus they've ACW stuff too.

I have had these since first release, but only just started painting a couple of WM units of Rohan cavalry and heroes Not having done much 10mm before, it's different

I’m really enjoying painting at the smaller scales, but you’re spot on, it’s very different at times, can take some getting used to.

@@MiniatureRealms my pals are trying to get me to use some contrast or speedpaint for the rest of these. However, as spray primer isn't a viable option, I am not sure how they'd do with brushed on primer I need to try some sample priming, see if I can get the even coat contrast/speed pain needs

Yeah I think a smooth coat is pretty important, but I’m sure it’s doable. What paint do you usually use to brush prime with? At this scale you can get some great results with Contrast/Speedpaint over a zenithal base, so if you can brush prime in grey, then drybrush in white afterwards, the effect you will get from the paints is great.

@@MiniatureRealms Dulux Brilliant White ;) Seriously, mu "Miniature Paints" white primer has just run out, so I bought some Vallejo White and Sand primer, but not tried them yet. Hmm, to Amazon for grey then :)

There’s some lovely stuff they do, and on the Excellent Miniatures site. I wish there were more Lotr minis of that standard/style. I can see me being tempted by more Warhammer Old World themed stuff in the future.

@@MiniatureRealms I'm going to build some old world armies in 10mm that I've always wanted to do but never got round to when I used to play Fantasy Battles. Those Copplestones are really nice too, no doubt I'll take a closer look at them at some point. I'd like to do some big battle games in middle earth.

That’s what tempting for me Fantasy Battle was such a huge part of my past gaming, so much so I’m worried about the up coming Old World project, not because I care what they change, that will make me want to do it, and I’ve got no intention of ever doing large battles in 28mm+ again 😂. Hopefully it will only inspire me to do it through Warmaster 🤞
