Now this is a beautiful little ship! This beauty is reminiscent of the North American Pacific halibut schooner. Wow!! What a sea boat!

Been boating and fishing my whole life. Definitely have been in some sketchy seas, but this has too be one of the most dangerous bar crossings! The skill required to handle these type of vessels through that is AMAZING!

These boats are similar build to a Snibby.They use to fish out in the North Sea.Very well build and they can take the weather.I think Snibby's are original a Scandinavian design vessel.I used to work on a pilot boat ex snibby we had a strong Gardner engine.She came from Scotland where she was build.

Great footage. Hey *+Nugget hunter* do you know the histories of the Cobden and Blaketown tipheads? I'd love to know just how they were engineered and built. Thanks for the upload.
@nugget70447 жыл бұрын
i don't know a lot of the history but i think they were built for loading coal onto the ships in the earlier year,i think a railway line was put down to cart the rock out to build the road out there and then the wharves built alongside,all thats left of a lot of the wharves these day's are the piles. cheers.

Sad thing to see this fine vessel Kutere, now aground on Cobden beach, Greymouth. Very good to know the crew are safe and well. Surely she could be pulled off with a tug at high tide. Yesterday, Monday 29th May 2017.

I worked on this boat with skipper and owner Horny, Ganet, and Matt Fisher. We crossed the bar in these conditions usual taking or gumboots of so we wouldn't sink if we went over. I was surprised to learn 25 years later she ended up on Cobden beach with Matt and Hornblower still working on her.

SWSimpson, that's what I thought, but people keep saying what a fabulous, great, well constructed boat it is!! To me, it looks as though it 'barely' has control....and certainly no speed!!
@KitLaughlin5 жыл бұрын
These boats are full displacement, and you know the formula... Flat out, maybe 9.5kn depending on her waterline length (square root of waterline in feet X 1.34 is pretty much as fast as they can go). IIRC, the current there can be over 6kn; then there's the speed of the waves in. Re. looking like it's about to sink: it wold have a draft around 2m, and will be loaded, so stable, and limited in speed by waterline length. Looked like good skippering to me. I just looked her up; she had a waterline length of about 50', so max speed of ~9.5kn.
@pdevonport72663 жыл бұрын
@@KitLaughlin Well done, you get a lot of ignorant comments on these bar crossings.

@@pdevonport7266 Thanks. Sitting outside the bar and checking it out carefully, even a bar you know, sometimes you can't tell you what the water's really like once you're in it, and committed.
