Watching Pro's do it is akin to playing tennis on Nintendo - it looks so easy! In real life, I'm the guy popping up the volley deep and then getting passed! Hahahahah! Thanks for the video Ryan. You're my favourite KZfaq instructor and I'd like a bunch of lessons in-person one day. Where are you in the USA?

Wow thank you for the support Lawrence? I do zoom lessons every week for players. They’re honesty better than in person lessons. I’m near Philly, but what are you looking to improve? Strokes, strategy, footwork,etc.?

I always think if your opponent hits a real good approach to your backhand the chance of passing is slim you may as well try and lob unless you have a lot of time to prepare a passing shot

I like to use a three ball drill to create match play situations in practice. You got to do the drills to build the skills. Practice the way you want to play. Just an old high school tennis coach. Remember the movie The Karate Kid? Wax on! wax off! Moving has to be instinctive.

Can you tell me if gasquet is using continental grip for his forehand....
@2MinuteTennis

Not continental. His base knuckle is on 3 (eastern forehand) and his heelpad is on 2 1/2 (between continental and Easter forehand)

opponent can do a easy lob instead of passing shot ? Wat u think...
@2MinuteTennis
@2MinuteTennis 3 жыл бұрын
Lobs are low percentage as you get better. Opponent’s overhead becomes too good, their approach is too fast to control the lob, it’s why you don’t see a lot of lobbing at high levels. Keeping the ball low wins more points. Thanks!!
@23davidmartin4
@23davidmartin4 3 жыл бұрын
@@2MinuteTennis yeah that is right. But in this video you already said passing shots are difficult due to less angle, and lob 50-50. It means no alternative ? Anyways thank you for the clarification on lobbing.
@2MinuteTennis
@2MinuteTennis 3 жыл бұрын
@@23davidmartin4 lobs are not 50/50. Also, the best thing to do when opponent comes to get is hit right to them low. It’ll result in winning the highest % of points.

Looks as though Gasquet hit the ball on the lower part of the strings on the approach.

If I play a two-handed backhander, I would target his body about 70 - 80% of my first serves. Or until they move back and then go for the angles. All two handers have trouble with the body serve. Also, I always to down that line when I approach. On the deuce court, it really doesn't matter where I put the ball, everyone I play has a weak backhand and can't pass me consistently. It's money in the bank.

I wonder if Mackenzie MacDonald Ryan came in at an angle would he have got that volley?
@markvanderwerf8592
@markvanderwerf8592 3 жыл бұрын
Disagree with this analysis. Gasquet's approach shot wasn't very good but Mackenzie hit a weak passing shot and Gasquest finished that perfectly. The argument that hitting more towards the inside in this case is better is flawed I think. Yes if you make your angle your opponent consequently get's more angle to hit for the passing shot. But by that same argument you might as well say that an approach shot should be right down the middle (or slightly right to force the backhand). It's more important that you put the opponent in difficulty which putting it in the corner more does so. Also putting it more outside means your opponent needs more time to get there typically meaning the need to walk slightly backwards. This gives you more time to get to the net to cut down the angle plus the opponent hits it from lower, perhaps even needing a slice, which makes the passing shot tremendously more difficult. And finally they will be more out of position so your volley is an easier finish. Overall the benefits of putting it in the corner more (more time, more difficult to hit well for opponent) tend to outweigh the downside of giving him more angle. Generally it's best to either hit very good angle or to hit little angle. Just putting it outside the court a bit doesn't really add difficulty for the opponent and they will have enough time to get there comfortably anyway but have more angle to work with. This is what Gasquet did here I think, he should have hit it either more towards the middle or further out i'd say, opposite of what you are arguing here. Especially when taking an approach to the backhand corner forcing the opponent to run more matters a ton, if the opponent is forced to take the backhand from open stance or as a slice their chances for a good passing shot drop enormously. On the forehand side there is more to say for not giving your opponent an angle. Another aspect to keep in mind is where you are hitting the ball from. If your position is almost exactly in the middle as Gasquet here the approach should be either more centered (with force and depth) as you will want net position in the middle (the closest point for you) or with a bigger angle to cause more difficulty. Now Gasquet hits it just a bit in the corner, has to move further to get the good net position and is slightly too much towards the middle for the volley if you ask me. It's simply Mackenzie's missing the opportunity for a good passing shot.
