I had the urge to make a video to go along with this song. Not just a slide show.
The first use of horses in warfare occurred over 5,000 years ago. The earliest evidence of horses ridden in warfare dates from Eurasia between 4000 and 3000 BC. A Sumerian illustration of warfare from 2500 BC depicts some type of equine pulling wagons. By 1600 BC, improved harness and chariot designs made chariot warfare common throughout the Ancient Near East, and the earliest written training manual for war horses was a guide for training chariot horses written about 1350 BC. As formal cavalry tactics replaced the chariot, so did new training methods, and by 360 BC, the Greek cavalry officer Xenophon had written an extensive treatise on horsemanship. The effectiveness of horses in battle was also revolutionized by improvements in technology, including the invention of the saddle, the stirrup, and later, the horse collar.
(lyrics)
I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman
Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo
I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run
I'm a horse soldier, timeless, through and through
I'm a horse soldier, eternal, through and through
I's with Custer and the 7th in '76 or '77
Scalped at Little Big Horn by the Sioux
And the tears and devistation of a once proud warrior nation
This I know 'cause I was riding with them too
I drank mare's blood on the run when I rode with the Great Khan
On the frozen Mongol steppe when at his height
I's a White Guard, I's a Red Guard, I's the Tsar's own palace horse guard
When Romanov was murdered in the night
I knew Salah al-Din and rode his swift Arabians
Harassing doomed crusaders on their heavy drafts
And yet I rode the Percheron against the circling Saracen
And once again against myself was cast
Well I've worn the Mounties crimson, if you're silent and you listen
You'll know that it was with them that I stood
When Mayerthorpe, she cried, as her four horsemen died
Gunned down in scarlet, coldest blood
[ From: www.metrolyrics.com/horse-sold... ]
I's the firstest with the mostest when I fought for Bedford Forrest
Suffered General Wilson's Union raid
Mine was not to reason why, mine was but to do and die
At Crimea with the charging light brigade
On hire from Swiss or Sweden, be me Christian, be me heathen
The devil to the sabre I shall put
With a crack flanking maneuver, I'm an uhlan alles uber
Striking terror into regiment of foot
I knew my days were numbered when o'er the trenches lumbered
More modern machinations de la guerre
No match for rapid fire or the steel birds of the sky
With a final rear guard action I retreat
No match for barbered wire or the armoured engines whine
Reluctant I retire and take my leave
Today I ride with special forces on those wily Afghan horses
Dostum's Northern Alliance give their thanks
No matter defeat or victory, in battle it occurs to me
That we may see a swelling in our ranks
I's with the Aussies at Beersheba took the wells so badly needed
And with the Polish lancers charging German tanks
Saw Ross' mount shot down at Washingtown the night we burned the White House down
And cursed the sack of York and sons of Yanks

Tell me about it. Very few soldiers are as timeless and rememberable as the cavalry soldier. From the Hunnic raiders to the cavalry of both Union and Confederate sides in the U.S. Civil war and even the hit and run massacres of T.E. Lawrence amid Pancho Villa. Even in wars today, stealth scouting is performed on horseback when technological solutions are unfeasible. I do wish the song had contained a reference to Pancho Villa, but even without it, the song still kicks ass.

Great video! I had the good fortune to visit England and Scotland last spring and toured some of the regimental museums there of units that had history at Waterloo. Being the 200th anniversary of the battle, it was highlighted, front and center. The horse has been linked to man's military efforts for a long time, just like horses have served mankind domestically as well. Both era's are fading into memory now. I hope that the horse manages to survive into the future, nonetheless.

Corb Lund is correct that US special force still ride horses and donkeys. They are the best mode of transport in the Afghan mountains. Another interesting fact during WWII the Germans actually used horse mounted cavalry units to great effect. I remember a incident where 12 German cavalrymen captured 1,000 Russians and brought them back to the German lines. I think horse units can still plat an important role in todays military.

I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run I'm a horse soldier, timeless through and through Well, I's with Custer and the 7th, '76 or '77 Scalped at Little Bighorn by the Sioux And the tears and devastation of a once-proud warrior nation This I know, 'cause I was riding with them too And I drank mare's blood on the run, when I rode with the Great Khan On the frozen Mongol steppe while at his height And I's a White Guard, I's a Red Guard, I's the Tsar's own palace horse guard When Romanov was murdered in the night And I knew Saladin and rode his swift Arabians Harassing doomed Crusaders on their heavy drafts And yet I rode the percheron against the circling Saracen And once again against myself was cast Well, I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run I'm a horse soldier, timeless through and through Well, I've worn the Mounties' crimson, if you're silent and you'll listen You'll know that it was with them that I stood When Mayerthorpe, she cried, as her four horsemen died Gunned down in scarlet, coldest blood Well, I's the firstest with the mostest, when I fought for Bedford Forrest Suffered General Wilson's Union raid And mine was not to reason why, mine was but to do or die At Crimea, with the charging Light Brigade On hire from Swiss or Sweden, be me Christian, be me heathen The Devil to the sabre I shall put With a crack flanking maneuver, I'm an Uhlan alles über Striking terror into regiment of foot Well, I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run I'm a horse soldier, timeless through and through Well, I knew my days were numbered when o'er the trenches lumbered More modern machinations de la guerre No match for rapid fire, or the steel birds of the sky With a final rearguard action, I retreat No match for barbed wire, or the armored engine's whine Reluctant, I retire and take my leave Today I ride with special forces on those wily Afghan horses Dostum's Northern Alliance give their thanks No matter defeat or victory in battle, it occurs to me That we may see a swelling in our ranks Well, I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run I'm a horse soldier, timeless through and through I'm a horse soldier, eternal through and through I's with the Aussies at Beersheba, took the wells so badly-needed And the Polish lancers charging German tanks Saw Ross' mount shot down at Washingtown the night we burned the White House down And cursed the sack of York and sons of Yanks

I thoroughly enjoyed Corb concert last night. I’m just going back over videos. Amazing. In this one, I just wondered where all that footage came from. Back in the day, the amount of real action horse riding for movies, including making it look like the person was killed, or the horse falls. Dangerous

Excellent song, but I just have to nitpick the part about the myth of Polish lancers charging at German tanks. In reality, the Polish unit were mounted infantry that surprised a battalion of German infantry in the open and charged them. The cavalry unit "won" in the sense that it managed to disperse the Germans. The "tanks" were actually armoured cars and they arrived to reinforce their infantry comrades.
@tucnaci_z_prahy
@tucnaci_z_prahy 9 жыл бұрын
Not exactly - the Polish started a charge against the infantry, the armored cars were already with them, but hidden from the cavalry by terrain. When the cavalry found them, the fastest route to safety was actually across the road, between the armored cars, and to the forest on the other side. Hence the myth of "charge against armor" while it was "charge past". It was augmented when Propaganda Kompanien were filming there on the next day dead horses and cavalrymen and a tank unit was passing by.
