Yes the homeschool work plans are laid out awesome! We’re using CKLA, HG, sci for kindergarten and math with confidence. If you’d like a visual aid from teachers look up a NY charter school. They have k-3 grade listening&learning and skills taught by teachers!

My son is super huge on visual learning. I play the video, pause at points where they need to repeat vocabulary, sound out words, etc. it works really well.

Next year I think I’m going to use the language arts and science for our official kindergarten year. What I really like about it so far is the time spent on each unit. It is really thorough and just interesting. I notice when you do a different theme each week it doesn’t really stick. We will us that with our own handwriting and reading. Currently testing their new math with my boy. So far so good but it’s only been a few weeks. Thank you for sharing. I wish more homeschoolers would at least try it out more often.

I like the thoroughness as well! I would love to hear your thoughts on their math. It’s the one area of CK I haven’t tried yet.

@@michellegf yes! I’ll let you know soon. So far it’s a little tricky because they do a lot of group work activities at least in the first unit. It’s not too hard to adapt though so I’ll keep going to see where we land.

This is so helpful! Thank you!! So you use this for language arts and count it as history and science as well since it covers both topics? Or do you use the first grade Core Knowledge science and history subjects separately?

For 1st grade, CK language arts covers enough for both science and history that you don’t need additional resources.

I know you have used lightning literature too. Would you use only Core Knowledge or only lightning literature or both. Is both too much? Im worried that she may not enjoy all the book selections for Core Knowledge. I’m only looking at the language arts for 4th grade right now. I’m also trying to decide if we should do IEW. The price is hitting us hard for that.

I don’t have any experience with CK LA for 4th grade. I know it’s laid out different than the earlier levels. I’m not sure of the workload of CK 4 either, but I think it’s easy to supplement LL. I would start with CK as it’s free and then add LL if you find it necessary. I agree that IEW is expensive! It’s by far the most expensive curriculum I’ve bought. I know CK LA does have writing instruction in it as well, but again I haven’t tried it so I can’t speak to its quality.

Since Core Knowledge has history and science included with their LA now, do you feel it is necessary to use their history and science units? Are they the same or do they go more in depth in history and science?

The history and science units go more in depth. With younger elementary I think the LA covers enough. However for older kids I would use both. One of the things I like about CK is it really is a curriculum you can pick and choose and customize. For my 7yr old she just does the LA and I feel like that covers enough science and history. For my oldest she does a different LA program so I add in the CK science and history units

Each unit has a skills workbook and and a listening and learning workbook. If you click on the student skills workbooks you will find reading checks and assessments throughout. www.coreknowledge.org/free-resource/ckla-unit-1-grade-1-skills/

@@LearningwithJudah the link is for first grade. I know the second grade skills units have them as well. I’m not sure about 3rd grade and above because I haven’t used them yet.
