Corey Congilio compares the Martin D-18 and D-28 at Willcutt Guitars
In 2005, Corey produced his first EP for a local country artist and his love of the studio began to blossom. Corey became an in demand session player in Pittsburgh and began to produce projects for singer-songwriters which ran the gamut of styles.
Over a 15 year period as an instructor, Corey has taught hundreds of students. That experience lead Corey to become an author of 15 instructional guitar courses with TrueFire.com garnering him status as one of the site’s top selling instructors. Information on studying guitar with Corey can be accessed here.
Corey’s currently working as a session guitarist and producer as well as and performing with his solo project in Nashville. He can also be seen on tour with Furthest Point/Thirty Tigers recording artist Lucie Silvas. Corey is an artist clinician for CF Martin Guitar and lead presenter Universal Audio and can be found presenting for those companies around the world.

I bought the D-18 a year ago and it has been perfect. Tuned it really well 9 months ago and it is still perfectly in tune!

Went to my fav shop for neck adjustment on my Taylor 810. Picked up a Martin dread from the custom shop. Adirondack spruce, goncolo alves (AKA tiger wood) back/sides. It was love at first strum. BIG, BOLD, LOUD. In my living room the walls shake when I play a big open chord. Also amazing to look at. My Taylor sold the same weekend and I’m now playing the Martin every day. I love Corey’s finger lickin good chops and demos. I’m firmly in the Martin camp.

You simply can't beat the combination of Sitka spruce and mahogany.

We should have a D-18 vs. HD-28 reimagined standard series, to compare apples to apples. The D-18 and HD-28 have the same bracing but different back/side wood. Here, the bracing is different as well.

@@cadenconley3153 With MY ear, I feel the 35 is a little brighter. Part of me wants to have a D-28 just because of it's obvious low-end undertones. I just felt that the 35 was a little more balanced.

@@marchel9322 35s are very special. 28 players tend not to like them.because they arent 28s. the quarter inch bracing makes for an instrument that on the good side more body movement as you play, which means louder, more responsive. notes FLY off a 35 in a way they do not a 28. on the bad side, they have less headroom. the top moves so much that the sound is floppy and boomy if you are an aggressive picker or you really bang on your chords. so yeah if you're a banger go for a 28. if you have more finesse in your pick control and are a more even player, the 35 outclasses the 28 by a mile. also humidify your instruments. a lot of complaints about various models come from assessing dry guitars.

Can't go back to rosewood after getting a good hog. I got a Martin D mahogany 09/D mahogany from you guys. Best hog they make besides the authentic. Hands down. You guys should have held onto one of these guys just to have one. Only made 139 of them over a 4 year period. Anyway I'm not complaining.

Oops. the D28 sounds louder. This is a problem as research shows listeners confuse tone at different volumes. Of course, it may be that it's just on my system that the D28 sounds louder. However, having played both, the D18 always sounds louder off the shelf. Also, they sound kind of tight. If you are buying a Martin, you need to play lots, and you need to have played/heard some that have been around for a while so you can get a sense of how they are going to develop. That aside, Corey, that was a great intro to 2 beautiful guitars.

I I like the D-18 mahogany better. Seems to be more space between the notes. Not so smoothed out as the D-28, which drives me nuts! Thanks for the demo!

Played them all. 3 year Martin quest... bought a used magic d-28. Note to all... they are not equal. They are living creatures and no two alike. The d-28 I bought was the best guitar I played to my ear and it makes me play better and differently. But I willsay again n again I prefer the tone of a 28

I knew a Bob from Wilcut guitar Southland drive. He played in a guitar mass we had at church an I tried to follow. Not much success then. I have learned a few things since and I play in church on Sundays. I had a Dorado by Gretch. He wanted to tudle it because it had some issues. I moved and never got a round to it.
