Corey Congilio compares the Martin D-28 and D-35 at Willcutt Guitars

That experience lead Corey to become an author of 15 instructional guitar courses with TrueFire.com garnering him status as one of the site’s top selling instructors. Information on studying guitar with Corey can be accessed here.
Corey’s currently working as a session guitarist and producer as well as and performing with his solo project in Nashville. He can also be seen on tour with Furthest Point/Thirty Tigers recording artist Lucie Silvas. Corey is an artist clinician for CF Martin Guitar and lead presenter Universal Audio and can be found presenting for those companies around the world.

It just comes down to what sounds best to your ear. I bought a 2004 D35 that had survived a house fire but had damaged the lacquer finish, so I sanded the body and put some lemon oil on it. Then I had the braces scalloped . The only problem with it now it that if you hit the bass too hard it busts out the living room windows and the treble shatters my wife's wine glasses like on those Memorex commercials. She had to learn to drink her wine straight out of the bottle instead of using a wine glass. But I have to remember to lock it in its case at night when the moon is full or it goes out by itself to hunt down D 28's.

Got 2006 D-28 that sounds like any thing you can dream up, that's that Martin mystic, and a GPC-35 cutaway, that is beyond comprehension, went in for strings, came out with that, glad I did, thanks.

I think the D-35 has definitely more body. I also think that the single notes stand out a bit more. I own a thirty years old Sigma copy of the D-35 and I recognize the personality.

I have a 2005 d-35 and 2009 hd-28. Both are wonderful guitars. If I could only have one of them, well that's one decision I don't want to make. They both keep getting better every year. I'm 76 years old and plan on passing them down to a family member. I had a 1970 d-18 that I left in my car in August for eight hours in a black case and I still morn for that guitar. Slickest day of my life. The reason for the tuners is the original d-35 didn't have open gear tuners and never have.

Great review. I can really hear what people say is tr difference between these two guitars right here. The D35 absolutely sounds brighter and more balanced while retaining those bass notes and the D28 is again I've read the word "muddier" much more bass heavy here vs the D35.

In general I like 28s better because it seemed the 35s were always a bit boomy with the 3 piece backs. But I found a killer 35 that isn't boomy and I like it better than any 28 I have ever played

I’m a singer/ songwriter, I have a D35 I bought almost 50 years ago. I feel I’m using a Ferrari as a golf cart. I’m not worthy. I’m a finger picker with no great talent. My guitar carries me. I will always love it. Whatever you have to pay, do it.

Why play so close to the saddle! This give a top end sound. Try playing over the sound hole.

Playing so close to the bridge (and so loud) is not producing the nicest sound on both guitars.

Two of my uncles have D35. They're difficult to play and always sound like the strings are dead. No mid- range tones at all.

You may try new strings . Martin is pretty much a 12 gauge company but , I have a rosewood that takes 11 gage though when I feel puny . they are better for learning songs . (easier) . I have a friend who plays 13 gauge strings . ouch !

@@earlspearl2933 Martin is a 13-gauge company. The D-18, 28, 35, 41 and 42 all come with 13's right from the factory. Their dreadnaughts are meant for 13's.

You should try getting a full set up, nut, bridge, neck adjustment etc. my HD28V needed a neck reset and was sounding that way too for a while. Reset and belly buldge repair totally transformed it. Not to mention new strings. Elixers were a game changer for me. No Martin should sound dead. I bet there is something wrong. I've played plenty of older ones that were not inspiring, but Im sure they all have the potential to get dialed in.

I was expecting to hear more bass from the D35. Probably just the player or the string set. Then again, new guitars always sound somewhat "green" and need to be played in.

I'm sorry, but I can't get past the 'Thump, Thump, Thump' of the player's style. It's almost like he's playing a Conga on the top of both guitars. Either his pick is entirely too thick, or he's really beating those strings and bringing out that 'Thump' sound in the guitar. It makes it sound like a Cigar Box.

Why play so choppy? Just strum nice and easy and let the guitar do it's job. That was a poor example my opinion.
@speedymau

Strumming too close to the bridge, probably using 0.11 strings... thin and dry. Try again with 0.12s and mid-rosette... try not to hit the guitar as if it were a drum...
