Good to point out the second drain bolt. On my 2006 Honda Rubicon GPS the 'second drain bolt' is not for an oil cooler, it drains the, for lack of a simpler term, the hydraulic driven transmission reservoir. I believe Honda calls it 'Hondamatic' and there are a few youtubes on how it works. That's why mine takes 5 litres of oil for a complete oil change. Maybe yours is different.

I used amsoil 0w40 synthetic for atvs in my 2001 trx 500 rubicon for 17 years without any transmission issues or complaints. Still runs like new.

Good instructional video. I purchase a new 2009 Rubicon in 2008 and have always had the Honda dealer service but today I decided to do my own oil change and found this vid. Here is what my '09 Rubi Owner's Manual has for Recommended Oil: Suggested oils are equal in performance to SJ oils that are not labeled as energy conserving on the circular API service label. Your ATV does not need oil additives. Use the recommended oil. Do not use oils with graphite or molybdenum additives. They may adversely affect clutch operation. Do not use non-detergent, vegetable, or castor based racing oils. Do not use API SH or higher oils displaying a circular API ‘‘energy conserving’’ service label on the container. They may affect lubrication and clutch performance. The JASO T 903 standard is an index for engine oils for 4-stroke motorcycle engines. There are two classes: MA and MB…MA is recommended.

For the last 2 oil changes I have used 10-40 Amsoil Metric. No problem in fact it runs even better with Amsoil.

Regarding the concern relating to synthetic oil, I have always used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Racing 4T 10W-40 specifically formulated for motorcycles with no issues. Same year/model ATV as in the video.

Same here, I use Rotella T6 synthetic all the time since 2005 and never had a problem. Notice in the forums that people that complain about slippage usually have quite a bit of mileage. I don't think oil is the problem. Thanks for the video.

you should make a video of where your oil level should be on the dipstick, considering the one shown in the manual is not the one actually in the atv.

I just did my oil change for 500 rubicon 2011. It specifies 4.6L capacity yet I put in 5L and still not up to full level indicator. Both drains and filter are tight.

Full synthetic car oil has molybdenum in it. "Moly" ruins wet clutches that are in fourwheelers and dirtbikes and motorcycles. It is important to run motorcycle oil in these types of motors because of the wet clutch. You can use full synthetic motorcycle oil, because it does not have "moly". Full synthetic motorcycle oil works great in these machines.

How do I check the oil? The manual I has a dipstick that looks different than the one I have. Can you show me on your dipstick where exactly it needs to be checked? I didnt exactly understand your final comment.

Does the bolt on the filter cover need more turns with the wrench than the plugs? I found a few drips after I did it. Turned a bit more but I’m scared to over tighten

I have to agree. A 41 minute video on an oil change is fine if you stay on topic. That's my primary comment/suggestion. You're a good teacher and you showed us some great details. In other videos, stick to the topic so we can learn what we came to learn. Thanks for taking the time to make and post this. Very helpful.
