In Star Wars, the Clone Wars may seem to only be 4 years but today we're doing some of our own historiography with the politics and history of Star Wars to explain what I'm calling the Long Clone Wars.

WW2 is a perfect example for the actual end of the war question, there were German forces sitting on some Norwegian islands that officially surrendered months after VE day.

The History of the Old Republic’s is long and complicated, and considering how different eras within the Old Republic was differnet from one another because of how Democracy charge the people of the Galaxy. One Era could be a era of exploration and discovery because the Senate put its effort into mapping the Galaxy, other could be an era of Xenophobia and Religious extremists because of the rise of a new religion swaying many the Galaxy, and that not even mentioning the numerous wars of the Sith and the gradual decline of the Galactic Republic authority.

Solid gold work Corey. As a history major I get way more excited than I should for videos like this. I’d love to see future videos breaking down the political nature of the Imperial era and the byzantine nature of its politics. And the role of orgs like the senate and COMPNOR in daily life

This is a work of sublime beauty that scratches an Itch in the back of my head for realpolitik to be present to a greater extent in Star wars. It's practically a graduate thesis, if places offered degrees for Star wars lore

This may be a little too idealistic, but part of me is wondering if after the Invasion of Naboo, the Senate finally realized that they had to start fixing things. Maybe nobody thought about how Rim worlds have to wait so damn long for membership only to get few of the benefits, but at least people seemed to recognize the megacorporations had been given too much power. I mean, think about how easy and popular a war between these Rim Megacorporations and the Core Worlds would be. Since the megacorporations that formed the Separatist Council were run by and made up mostly of aliens, they could easily tell the rest of the galaxy they were fighting to overthrow the Republic’s humanocentric doctrine and ensuring non-humans never become subservient to humanity. And since the war would be limited to the Core Worlds, many of these alien worlds wouldn’t suffer unless they had to provide resources for the war effort. Of course after the Core Rim militaries, the Judicial Forces, and the Jedi Order are defeated, there wouldn’t be anyone left to stop the Megacorporations. They would of course make companies like Kuat and Blastech completely loyal to them, set up a power base in the Outer Rim since they seem to basically control at least half of it, and most worlds wouldn’t have a military strong enough to fight back. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the worst version of capitalism. Whatever ethics and laws of the Republic there were would be gone. And everything would revolve around money. All politicians would be part of this corporate government, and it’s not like they have to fake a democracy because they will have the biggest droid army and droid navy in history. Uprisings would easily be put down and the only hope would be if some corporate leaders had a change of heart and rallies together. Now sure, as Canon novels point out despite the shock and horror of the Trade Federation’s Invasion of Naboo, the Republic courts were unable to declare Nute Gunray guilty despite putting him on trial four times between 32 BBY and 28 BBY, not to mention he got to keep his job. Still, I like to think the reason the megacorporations formed the Separatist Council was because they became worried the Republic was going to take a hard anti-corporate stance. I mean, basically for megacorporations during the Clone Wars, you either joined the CIS to get richer or you got as damn close as you would with the Galactic Republic’s government like Kuat Drive Yards to remain relevant and valuable. And when the war ended, you either became a valuable asset to the Empire or got nationalized as punishment for your treachery.

So glad to see an analysis of Galactic history that does not focus on the "great man" Jedi/Sith kind of history (and yes I know they weren't all "men") but on trade and colonialism as issues. Great stuff!!

Fantastic video, great work. I know I'm not the only one who loved the periodisation tangent. I'd personally love you to do some character deep dives. I know for many of the main characters there's hours and hours of history to discuss, so might be harder to do a break down of say, Obi wan and his life and times, but particularly with a lot of the New Republic chief of state options in TR, I'd love to know more about them. And if you wanted to commit to long form breakdowns of some major characters, that'd be awesome too!

metanerdz lore is what you want then. star wars channel specializing on deep dives into niche topics and characters.. easily my favorite star wars channel, he always cites his sources and explains things super clearly. eck and Corey run good channels as well, but they cater to a MUCH larger audience (eck moreso than corey) so they have more encouragement to play to more widely popular topics, rather than doing a full history on the dathomirian species (metanerdz lore's most recent vid). imo, eck and Corey are great for overviews and the beginnings to deep dives. though Corey is doing more of these deep history videos recently and im loving it. 😄

I feel like the fall of megacrops and lingering imperial sympathies leads to the rise of popular individual senators. Now instead of the megacrops that happens to have KDY and SoroSuub as powerful influencers, the senators of Kuat and Sullust who represent those companies are now the influencers. Add on the influx of liberated Imperial Remnant worlds in the mid New Republic era during New Rebellion and there was a fear of Imperial sympathizers trying to assert control over the New Republic.

Yeah, even as a clone trooper fan, I got to feel sorry for CIS citizens. They are stuck between a democracy that ignores them and makes them pay taxes despite not helping to develop their worlds or even provide basic protection against pirates and criminals. On the other side though, they have the megacorporations who want more power and money than what the Republic has given them. Basically, a government that cares far too little for you and a government that cares way too much for you for the wrong reasons. Status Quo vs something just as bad or worse. And on top of that, the Galactic Empire arrives and basically takes the worst qualities of both factions: the exploitation of the CIS and the Core World/humanocentric bias of the Republic.

I also really look forward to your video on the composition of the Separatists. Lucas insisted throughout the prequels and his time with the clone wars that the trade federation and other mega corporations are supposed to be more analogous to modern defense contractors and the military industrial complex, rather than active participants in the war until the very end. The films and clone wars being more about selling toys and ILM studio magic I think are ill suited to George's very political, if at times muddled vision. Can't wait to see an in universe crack at squaring that circle.

Hmm, reminds me of how the likes of the Spanish Civil War, the Ethiopian-Italian War, the Sino-Japanese War, and even WW1, the Franco-Prussian War, and the Crimean War influenced WW2 and beyond. Addendum: You know, the "Long Clone Wars" can technically still continue on up to the Galactic Triumvirate era.

The obvious question, from a Doylist perspective, is: are these examples of similar forces breeding conflict down the ages, or is it just that authors are cribbing from each others notes? And what's the practical difference between the two?

Hmm, good question. Nice seeing someone acknowledge the ideas of Doylist and Watsonian perspectives, by the way.
@CoreysDatapad
@CoreysDatapad Жыл бұрын
I ultimately don't think there's that much of a practical difference, other than the cases where the authors are making a clear references being easier for me to analyse (since really that's what sourcebooks like the Essential Chronology/Atlas/Guide to Warfare exist to do in the first place, to some extent or another, which is where most ancient info on the galaxy comes from) but there's other things where similar perspectives or themes manage to come throug with much less obvious intention behind them.

Would it still be called the clone wars though? The themes of the conflict stretch back 17,000 years, but the technology in question, cloning, was not prevalent in that conflict. To me the greater clone wars would take place from 30ishBBY to well into the vong War. We have - the naboo conflict, battle of galidran, and the bando gora uprising leading to the secret order of a kaminoan clone army of Jango fett, former mandalore, by high ranking jedis Count dooku of sereno and Sifo Dyas. - the start of the separatist war in 17bby in which the clone army was discovered and deployed at geonosis - the conflicts of the next 3 years involving the clone army of the republic and the separatists own attempts at cloning -the introduction of spaarti clones in the battle of coruscant, which was to the kaminoan clones as the crossbow was to the longbow in mideval england - the clone rebellion leading to a reduction in the use of clones, although the core legion of the empire would be made up of clones for the rest of the empires reign - the experiments into force sensitive cloning, involving rebellion founder Galen Marek, Jorus Cybaoth, and X2. - the resurgence of cloning led by Thrawn and in a small part Isard, in which both armies as well as replacements of themselves or other important imperials were created -the destruction of kholm following the formation of the imperial remnant - thrawns creation of clone rebel cells and soldiers for his empire of the hand would lead into the vong war
