Highlighting a farmer's journey into cultivating diverse corn varieties, this narrative explores the deep connection between agriculture and heritage through the lens of corn farming. It touches on the aesthetic appreciation and agricultural experimentation with different corn types, illustrating the blend of tradition, innovation, and the personal quest for cultivating corn that is not only productive but also rich in color and history.
Organic farmer Anthony Boutard sells direct to the public rather than to distributors, he (and his wife Carol) joined what they describe as a "cook's market," the small but well-curated selection of vendors at the Hillsdale Farmers' Market just outside the city's core. Many of the city's premier chefs soon heard about the quality and unusual variety of Ayers Creek's produce, especially the chicories, tomatoes, garlic and the polenta that Anthony grinds from heirloom flint corn. And many became regular customers.
That corn has become Anthony Boutard's passion, so much so that he wrote a book about it called "Beautiful Corn: America's Original Grain from Seed to Plate." Not bad for a crop he says was originally just a whim, borne from childhood memories like the smell of cornbread fresh from the oven. Read the full text: cookingupastory...

That warmed my heart! I grow Glass Gem and am starting to grow Black Navajo this year...and I love my plants too. Seeing them grow, watching the changes in the garden through the seasons...seeing the critters build their homes in the rows, spiders, lady bugs, worms...getting excited by some unusual new-old variety of something...so nice to see some someone so satisfied by the garden ecosystem! Thanks for the video.

Your video may have been from eight years ago but the effect is not lost on my heart here in 2020. My wife and I are growing corn for the first time this year, in addition to numerous other flowers and vegetables in our backyard garden. We're actually going to do a bit of experimenting ... Planting three different varieties of corn, a few of which have widely different maturity dates; the other we'll stagger to try and avoid cross pollination. We're excited to try growing our own food; the idea of which was one of reasons we fit together so well and fell in love in the first place. Your passion for corn and farming speaks to us, because while we may not be farmers, we are sincerely appreciative of our farmers, including several that live in close proximity to us. Hope all are staying safe during this pandemic. Blessings from Ohio. -Michael

wow this is amazing, I love that purple one...wonder what it tastes like.. I have never seen some many pretty types of corn. I thought these where only used for decoration...can you eat all the different types? I would love to have a day there in the corn field...Nice to see others saving seeds and not touching Monsanto's crap

What do you have against localized expressions of BT toxin in the leaves? It's cheaper, more environmentally friendly, and there is less BT toxin on the actual crop than in comparison to spray methods - which hit the entire crop, instead of just specifically the leaves.

cyprus LOK Well yeah, all modern crops are GMOs; have you seen what corn looked like before we engineered it? Because it definitely wasn't as big as modern corn varieties, and was way higher in starch. Whether or not they're modified through gene splicing is a different discussion, but genetic modification is genetic modification.
