basket hats were traditionally an everyday wearing. Now its pushed to only pow wows, or museums showcasing. Im in the process of my own basket hat so I can wear everyday. As a kid, I always was hanging out with the elders in this building on the Nez Perce reservation. They thought it was funny that a 5 year old was hanging out with 60+ ladies and weaving. I miss them, Im sure they are long gone and even today I feel like as I re-pick it back up from memory they are proud of me for never forgetting it.

That’s so sweet ! 😿💗 I’m sure they are very proud now that you have continued to keep the tradition alive. It’s sad to see such beautiful art fade away into the shadows, it must be kept alive !

You may have known my Grandmother Susan Broncheau. She made corn husk bags and sold them for $50 each (total rip off). I’m hoping to learn how to make them, I was very young when she still did it. My older sister got taught how but says she can’t remember. I still live close to the NezPerce Reservation.

if you published a book I would buy it. I am pima Indian and wished I knew intricate weave style. I only do crude basic weave baskets from hemlock. I live in Lincoln city OR with two lil ones. We love outdoors and the baskets is a way to bring the outdoors inside. You ladies are truly blessed with amazing talent. MUCH respect.

Wow, I'm absolutely amazed by the beautiful and intricate design of those baskets, I would love a more in depth tutorial because I'd love to give it a try, but I doubt I could find anyone knowledgeable over here in Germany!!!

I went to camp and we learned basic techniques for weaving with corn husks and we made dolls. As soon as I saw the husks what jumped back to me was the smell, the dried husks smell so terrific. Beautiful work

Dear friend, I am giving one job. When we sleep we put mosquito net around bed. Watch some Russian bed. They live in tent and cover the bed with partition as mosquito net. My suggestion is you make like mosquito net around the bed to protect your self from colder wind. It will become mini room and temperature will rise automatically inside room. You prepare one check the temperature. With how many blankets we can cover our self better we cover our bed with maize husks net. Namh shivay.
