I've used an older kinze 6 row 2000 for many years now. Great planters. I'd move the seed meter to another row to see if your problem moves to another row. Given you have looked it over, you're right, that probably isn't were the problem is. I would look over the individual row unit drive chain and sprockets. Also look at the lever that engages the corn meter on the row unit. The spring can get weak or gummed up with dirt and oil. Enjoy watching your videos. Best of luck.

I went with the thicker openers blades. Loved the trench. Also the seed tube guard is always overlooked. I got the Valions from Thompson. At least now I'm getting a great trench to work with. Closing on no till is another story. I also replaced my down pressure springs this year just to be sure.

Thanks! After further inspection, the #35 drive chain on one row unit had a bad spot in it! Another person suggested that, if they hadn't this problem could have been a real stumper! Who'd have thought a bad spot in a chain!

you used a great overhead camera view. I really enjoyed hanging out with you in the shop.

Thanks SF... Glad you came to hang out! I dont know why I don't make more shop/repair videos, people seem to really like them...

if your getting skips make sure the nut holding the finger wheel on is tight enough. 2-4 inch pounds of torque. check chains for dry or sticky links. if they stick they can cause a jump in the system. doing the test in the dirt instead of gravel and holding the closing wheel frame up in the air helps a lot on finding spacing issues.

+Jon Stevens Maple Grove Farms thanks Jon. The chain was bad on that one row

It's cool seeing farming in other countries. Completey different from what I do

Yes, its amazing how different things are around the world!

Totally different planter from the case cyclos I've been around.

checking the seed drive chain for kicks or missing rollers it will cause it to jump the seed fingers. .cause pour spacing..

Mark Cornell thanks for that useful info Mark. That could be my issue!

I have a brand new set 4row hd opener disks I'd give you for next to nothing. Ordered them 4 years ago, but chose to stay with the stock ones. You should make sure you clean out the finger meters as soon as you're done planting! Takes the same amount of time as shown here, and you help make sure moisture doesn't collect and corrode the seed plate.
@larsonvalleyfarm6 жыл бұрын
If I'd have known you had them I would have bought them from you, I was down in El Paso last night, would have been convenient! Yeah, typically I try to clean them out better, last year a few things didn't get don't the way they normally do. This year should be better, I am not bending over backwards to help everyone else out, just gonna do my own thing here at home!
@oKFarmer6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you need to help somebody else though, just have to remember to get back to what you need to get done too! Too bad on the disks, a case of beer probably would have been sufficient comp. : )

Your corn planter has a skip, mine drops to many seeds! LOL That was a cool video. I have never seen the insides of the planter before. My planter is a really old John Deere, much more basic than yours. But I only plant about 5 acres, so I haven't wanted to spend money on a newer one.
@larsonvalleyfarm6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I think I have determined it's the drive chain on the row unit. You must have a 494 with the seed plates?
@dehavenfamilyfarm6 жыл бұрын
I am not sure what the model number is. I think someone took two John Deere planting units, and mounted them to a home-made 3-pt hitch frame. I seed canisters are round, and yes they do use the seed plates. I have tried all different sized plates, replaced the part inside that is supposed to only allow 1 seed per hole, but nothing has stopped the thing from dropping multiple seeds. The annoying thing is that it doesn't drop two seeds every time, it varies when it happens- but it happens a lot. I have given up trying to fix it lol

you can come get mine all ready when you get yours done!

I guess I should go through my planter to. I'll probably wait till the day I want to plant. lol
@larsonvalleyfarm6 жыл бұрын
Typically thats what I normally do, wait until the day I need it! But this Winter/Spring has me Cabin fever syndrome with all the cold, snow and now mud! I'm ready to start spring farming activities and now that weather finally broke in the next week or so I can start hauling manure hopefully!

if your seed disc openers bearings are wore they can Groove your seed tube and cause skips and I carry a bottle brush to run down the seed tubes to clean out any fuzz or debris
@larsonvalleyfarm6 жыл бұрын
Funny thing, my planter came with a bottle brush for cleaning the seed tubes!

Amy Bailey - bottle brush, I'm glad I read that. thanks for commenting Amy.

Regarding the skipping seed placement issue and having inspected the metering units and seem happy with them have you considered the possibility of some damage somewhere in the drive line? I notice that there a least some nylon gears and I hate them as they have a tendency to "jump" occasionally when wear occurs - a bit like worn chain and sprockets.
@larsonvalleyfarm6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dan, Someone else mentioned a bad chain, which makes sense because the skip is about every 8-10 feet in the field. That #35 chain that runs from the frame hex shaft back to the seed unit is probably the culprit!
@cesmith45666 жыл бұрын
I rebuilt my own finger units with precision and John deere parts cheaper than I could buy new precision assemblies then had them tested!

How many acres you gonna do in corn? If you ever sell that planter, someone will get a dandy now that uve made it right. Guys around here, would put that on craigslist as fully field ready and sell it for fixed price, having never fixed it.
@larsonvalleyfarm6 жыл бұрын
Thank man! I plan to plant right around 30 acres of corn. Yeah, buying from a private party can be iffy!!!
@jefferytrice91806 жыл бұрын
That bearing looks good for another 100 acres lol. Are them bearing cheaper at shout? I was over in your neck of the woods today thought about getting ahold of you to stop in.
@larsonvalleyfarm6 жыл бұрын
I was home! I honestly don't know how much Deere charges for those bearings. The Opening disks and Gauge wheels come with the bearings already installed
@jefferytrice91806 жыл бұрын
LVF & Northern Wisconsin Farming yes my 7200 gauge wheel are the same. I either get the bearing or complete wheel. Taking them apart can be a challenge at times. I had some deliveries up in Barron today.

Have you seen Jo Stevens latest video on inspecting seed units? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJOlisyUyaeWp30.html He addresses Some skipping and doubles issues that you might like to look at and perhaps consider if they are appropriate to you and your equipment.

Everybody gets all excited about taking their planting units in to john deere to get "calibrated". There is nothing in there to calibrate, all you can do is test and adjust some things. Anybody can inspect and replace worn parts. So unless you take your seed in with you and run it on a test stand, there is not much they can do, but they can sell you parts at a very good markup. Lol
@larsonvalleyfarm6 жыл бұрын
Mark Groth you are 100% correct! They are pretty simple to inspect yourself and replace any worn parts. Keep your money in your own pocket!
