Cornering on a Motorcycle is by far one of the most exciting and fun things you can do while out riding. They can sometimes be scary, but by following a few simple rules and taking your time, especially as a new rider, you can build your skill level to become a more relaxed, confident and safer rider.
**PLEASE NOTE**
I am not an Instructor. The methods I discuss in the video is the way I like to ride and the way I was taught to ride. Safety is ALWAYS my number one priority. Every rider has their own way of riding and ultimately it's up to the rider to choose which how they want to ride and navigate corners.
Gear I use.

You definitely should be able to brake in a corner, it's called trail braking and it's an important skill. What you don't want to be doing is braking with 100% of braking power during a corner.

Isn't trail braking releasing the brake (which you applied just before the corner to lean the bike) around the corner gradually or maintaining that small brake?

@@Nick-qs7lwOnly in extremely tight corners… only slip your clutch if you’re decelerating too slow (for my bike it helps below 8mph). NEVER slip the clutch in corners unless slow. Rear brake can help tighten up a turn by slowing it down, but too much will lock the back wheel up. Also well done! You got a bike yet?

@talilkr5238 trail braking is when you are braking all the way into your tip in, and slowly releasing brake pressure as you increase lean angle, all the way to the apex.

Great video on cornering 👍🏼 an added bonus about road signs in the uk but is little known is the s bend or twisty corner signs actually show you the order of the corners coming up ! Either left then right or right then left but we see them all the time it’s easy to think it’s just the same basic sign but it isn’t . Helps when driving places you’re not familiar with👍🏼

About 10 years ago, in my early 50s I bought my first bike. I managed for 2 years and then sold it. I am a bit too old to be riding and am glad i never dropped or crashed the thing. But I still love learning how to ride and this video was awesome. Also loved hearing the Scottish accent. I used to have a Glaswegian accent way back in the 70s when I lived in Glasgow.

Very good video, i have been riding since 1971 and am still learning new things. Back in the day all we had to do was get a provisional license and we could ride anything up to 250cc with no proper instruction. On a tight left hand blind bend experience has taught me that position 3 is a definite no no , many drivers don't seem to realize that road markers are there for a reason and drift across into the other side of the markings .This guy is giving sound sensible advice. Stay safe guys .

Very much enjoying your videos fella , good advice and a nice mellow Scottish accent ! Mod 1 and two in a few weeks so enjoying these . I’m on my DAS , did two days transition to 650, pad work, road work, then I was put in for a test .. I asked them for a break so I could get some more road skill in as I felt quite bad on the ride out . Only done 300 miles on my 125 and on the bends felt uncomfortable. After some advice ¨ push left, go left , my riding improved. Initially I was ´steering’ around the bends and going around like I fifty pence coin. Great videos … really enjoyable Peter

Thank you for mentioning 'head in opposite lane'! It is a regular thing on the A82 which seems to attract scores of bikers with limited cornering skills who seem determined to kiss somebody's A-pillar. Not a good look since the worst case scenario is their helmet bouncing down the road with their detached head still inside it.

nice upload. When you on your MOD 2 you shouldn't move out of position 2 for cornering as that is classed as "Advanced riding" you could fail for it, you can obviously after you passed like every biker does. and FYI you can remove those silly warning stickers with a hairdryer ..My Bandit was covered with them lol

Cheers, Alex. Congrats on the pass. The SV is definitely a great first bike. Haven't had a pillion yet but I don't think there will be any issues. I am looking at upgrading next year to something a bit more tour friendly. The SV is great and it's awesome to have a lot of fun on but I'm planning on doing a bit of touring next year, NC 500 etc. I did fit the straight bars on mine so that definitely helps on longer runs but looking at something like the DL1050 or the bandit 1250 for next year.

you mention about never braking in a corner, you can brake in a corner but its how you do it. i watched a video and the person said to squeeeeeeze the brake, dont grab it. if your mid corner and a deer jumps out in front of you, its a skill to learn to be able to start braking mid corner and keep it upright and miss the obstacle, object, item on the road. he used percentages, start with 5% brake and build up pressure as the bike slows and you can stand the bike up from lean, the more upright the stronger you can pull the brake on, using the most powerful brake, the front brake. it also tightens your radius going round the corner. the main reason people think you cant brake in a corner is most people grab the brake and drop the front end. you should ride in a way to not need to brake in a corner, but having that extra skill is always useful. have you ridden further north up by Callander and Lochearnhead and over to Crieff? they have put road markings at some of the corners for motorbikes to follow as a guided line through the corner. i found them useful as one road was new to me and i would of ended up on wrong side of the road as it was a surprisingly tight bend for one of the corners.

How about a vid on bike clothing. I’ve got full textile kit, the jacket has a fixed thermal lining. A bit warm in the current temps down here in Derby of 30degrees C.!!!!!! Any tips for riding in hot weather and still being safe. Read a bit about mesh jackets but are they only of use for 2 weeks a year???
@MotoEcosse
@MotoEcosse 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Beverley. Yeah I can look into doing something like that. I also where a textile jacket. Mine has a thermal lining also but it can be taken out which makes all the difference, especially with the weather we're having just now. Some textiles do come with air vents that you can unzip for those hotter days. I wear bike jeans instead of textile trousers. I find they're better for air flow and keeping you a bit cooler. Avoid leathers in hot weather. You'd be surprised how quickly you can get dehydrated. I tend to leave my jacket zip open by a few inches, it allows a nice breeze when your out. I don't use heavy gloves or anything either. I use RST summer gloves, they also allow your hands to keep a bit cooler and because there's no bulky glove going over your wrist, you fasten your wrist straps over the gloves, this also let's cool air blow up your arms while riding. It's also worth checking your helmet vents, making sure they're fully open and clear. I've never personally used mesh jackets but as long as they have good armour they could be a good investment for the hotter days. Obviously in the cooler months they might not be ideal but you can get thermal tops etc which could help in the colder weather. Hot temps are always a constant battle when you're out on a bike. Regular pit stops to hydrate and cool off are a must at this time of year. It really comes down to trying to find the kind of gear that your comfortable in and still staying safe. I use a Richa textile jacket and it works pretty well through out the year. Having a jacket that has a lining that can be removed will make so much difference.

Hey, Dave. In theory you can take any corner on the road without having to move your body position too much. Adjusting body position is really a riders preference. When turning into a left corner and taking position 1, is there a danger of someone taking advantage of the space to overtake?
@MotoEcosse
@MotoEcosse 2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean turning left as a left turn onto a new road or going round a left corner? For a left turn onto a new road, being in position 1 stops the possibility of anyone cutting up the inside, but it yeah it does leave a big space in your right. For me at least it's very rare that someone would pass on my right as taking a left turn, anyone that does is usually another biker. If your going round a left corner, it depends on where you're at with your riding. If your training for mod 2 then stay in position 2 for all left and right bends. If you have your full licence you can use a slightly more advanced technique where you use position 3 for left bends and position 1 for right bends. This opens up the view of the road and gives you more road surface to make the turn, so you would actually start the bend in P3 and finish the bend in roughly P1. 🤜🤛

@MotoEcosse
@MotoEcosse 2 жыл бұрын
I always stay in position 2 at traffic lights. This is the way I was taught and the way I did it in my mod 2. The way to look at it is if you stop at lights in position 1 to try and stop cyclists cutting you up, you're leaving a massive gap to your right. It works the same if you were turning right at lights. By staying in position 2 your essentially taking up as much of the road minimising the opportunity for other road users undercutting or sneaking passed on the right. 🤜🤛

@@MrJnr786 Yeah nerves can be difficult to manage. Everyone has their own way of dealing with them. What I did on my mod 2 was just to treat it like a lesson. That definitely helped. There's no two way radio so I just talked to myself through out the test, so every instruction I got I would talk my way through it. As for indicators, cancelling them after taking your junction, exit etc is an absolute must. Just remember, new road = cancel that indicator. When putting them on, make sure there are no junctions before the road you want to take as this would be a false indication.

I think what surprises a lot of people is that on entry to the corner you should roll on the throttle. But this stabilises the bike by putting pressure on the back wheel. My instructor told me to roll on as soon as I enter the corner. I thought it might be at the apex or on the exit! Absolutely agree all braking should be done before the corner.

Cheers, Finan. Congrats on that mod 2 pass man. I did see this article a few weeks back. I think the main reason is to remind people that these kind of roads can be dangerous if not navigated properly. I have seen quite a few riders who tend to ride like they're on a track. Those nice Scottish roads that we have can make it a little too tempting for some riders to open it up and end up in a sticky situation. We'll see what they do in the future with these signs. I've personally never seen any yet. I'll have to keep my eyes open for them.
