February 1st 2014 and another huge swell batters the coast of Cornwall, less than a month after the much heralded Hercules storm system. www.cornwalls.c...
Whilst this storm received non of the fanfare of Hercules it was just as dramatic as it slammed into the coast of West Cornwall.
This footage was shot at Porthcurno beach, Land's End and Sennen Cove - some of the most exposed spots in Mainland Britain.

The spray may reach 100 feet, there's no way that the wave does.

How long have you lived at Sennen Cove?, because my family originally came from the Cove, for generations, and I never heard of a family called Smith, even living their, it's Always, been Pender's, Chope, Nicholas and Roberts 🤔

Rather arrogant…. Like as if you know everyone in sennen! I’m born and bred in Falmouth, my family of Rowe goes back hundreds and hundreds of years, YET I’d never be ad arrogant to think i know everyone in the town lol.

My father was stationed at porthcurno while working at Cable and Wireless back in the late 70's and we lived in the house nearest the beach. In the winter I would play a game called shipwrecked sailor.... Never ended well. The rock at the end is 60 feet tall. There were times it was covered with waves at least that high. IMO this is one beautiful and desolate places on earth.

Great filming. Really captures all the elements of a coastal storm. Was up at St Agness on Saturday & still very windy but nothing like this. Just subbed & looking forward to catching up on other vids of this gorgeous place we live. Ta!

I'm sorry. Thats hardly 20 foot waves...not 100. Video Title is misleading.
@cornwallguide

Theokondak Did you watch the whole film? Round about 6:30 they get quite big. Maybe the actual swell running isn't 100ft, but they are washing over a 200ft headland
@julesjulius187
@julesjulius187 9 жыл бұрын
The Cornwall Guide yeah but when the waves are crashing against, the force of the impact makes them go up much higher therefore making it not the real height of that particular wave
@Theokondak
@Theokondak 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's pretty awesome at 6:30, but still it is not 100 ft waves. There is a mathematical linear model about waves creation, which explains what are the ideal and yet possible situations for a huge wave to be created. The largest wave possible by this model is roughly 50 feet. There are some waves, known as freak waves or monster waves that can get up to 100feet, but there must be very special weather conditions for these waves to be created. Definition of Wave Height according to wikipedia: In random waves at sea, when the surface elevations are measured with a wave buoy, the individual wave height Hm of each individual wave-with an integer label m, running from 1 to N, to denote its position in a sequence of N waves-is the difference in elevation between a wave crest and trough in that wave.

All the people saying the waves are not 100 feet high don't know what they're talking about. They weren't born and don't live down here obviously. Off Lands End which is just around the corner out of frame to the left the swell is regularly 40 feet high and that's on a 'relatively' calm day. When the big storms hit down here the waves can be anything from 40 foot at the low end to 90 feet high. How can can you account for the fact that over 40 feet above sea level solid granite boulders weighing several tons are pushed like pebbles by the force of the waves down a cobbled street. I've seen it with my own eyes more than once. Or Porthleven further up the coast where until recently I kept one of my fishing boats. I've seen waves going straight over the roof of the clock tower. They were at least 65 feet high and that's not anywhere near as exposed as Sennen.

These are relatively small waves and the 100ft claim is stupid! Waves of 10+ft are very common in these waters even in good weather. People might expect something called "The Cornwall Guide" to be accurate about the local seas.
