This video was originally created to learn the technical basics of editing with Final Cut Studio. It was recorded using a Flip Cam, which had fairly decent video quality (for the time) except for close-ups. I meant to dub over the audio with a voiceover and a soundtrack as the next step in my Final Cut project, but I never got around to it since I moved on to another random project. If I had realized this video would have gotten as many hits as it has, I might have spent time making this an actual how-to video.
And this is not REALLY a how-to video since this was the FIRST time I changed my brakes. I'm not sure you should follow instructions from someone who was doing this for the first time! This was on my 2000 Toyota Corolla's rear brakes. I learned from watching other people's KZfaq videos, so maybe this could be a supplemental video for you. Work on your brakes at your own risk.
I didn't intially want to do change my brakes myself. I wanted to pay someone else to do it, but the 2 or 3 people I took it to could never fix the squeak, so I had to take matters into my own hands -- or go crazy with that noise you hear throughout the video!

i just did this on my 96 corolla. took me a while on the first side. the other side went a lot quicker. here in alexandria, a gas station wanted to charge me $330 dollars just to replace the shoes. i paid $150 dollars for quality shoes and drums. thanks for the inspiration.

Girl Power, very impressive skills! I did these brakes yesterday and it took me 3 hours to finally get one side correct. What makes this job challenging is the tight space of the brake assembly, number of springs involved, and the star adjuster must fit exactly right or you can't install the drum. Good look to all...

I just wanted to tell you that your instructional video is top notch and I will get around to following this as soon as I can figure out how to get a stuck wheel off of the hub. Worked on both sides most of the day using pry bars, crow bars , even set the car down and with a couple of lug nuts holding the wheel on tried rocking the car from side to side and nothing. Funny thing is I got the wheels off before and sanded and greased the hub to keep this from happening again and now they're stuck solid.

Great Video breakitandlearn (great to see a young lady doing her own mechanical work and reminds me of all the years I spent teaching my daughters to work on cars/trucks/motorcycles), first of all, but to help a little more I'll point out the following: That is you left out a very crucial part of how to get the drums off at the beginning of the video . There is usually a rubber plug at the top inside/backside of the drum that inserts into an elongated oval access hole. After removing that rubber plug, you will have access to the brake adjuster, of which you will need to use 2 screwdrivers or special tools to screw back in the adjuster and this relieves or adjusts the brake pads inwards towards the center and away from the drum. If you look inside that hole, you will see the automatic adjuster arm that rests on the splined/geared/star wheel adjuster, you will need to pull that arm away from adjust with one screwdriver or special tool, while you use the other screwdriver or special tool turn in the adjuster. You need to pay attention, so you don't adjust it out more which would turn the adjuster in a way that pushes the brake pads outwards towards the drum. Best method is realize that on most drum brakes the automatic adjuster arm pushes downwards on that spline/geared/star wheel adjuster, so after pulling it away from spline/gear/star wheel, you then need to turn spline/gear/star wheel upwards to screw in the adjuster and thus backing the shoes inwards! You will feel the drum loosening, but if you do this the opposite direction, then you will feel the drum tightening up and you will not be able to rotate or turn the drum. Also, after loosing the facing of the drum from the hub/bearing assembly (part that your lugs are attached to) and backing in the brake shoe adjusters, if you are still having problems getting off the drum, then you can use 2 bolts in those little holes opposite of each other on the face of the drum to pull the drum away and off. Toyota designed those screw holes just for that purpose. So as you screw in the bolts, a little on each side alternating as you go, it should release the drum or you may hear a pop if the shoes are stuck to the inside of the drum. Not sure of the threading and pitch of the bolts needed, but I'm sure someone can reply and give that information. Also the leading (front) shoes should have more or longer brake pad surface, than the trailing edge shoe/pad. Sometimes aftermarket pads have nearly the same but the leading shoes (front) they have manufactured to be rotated higher to the top and the rear she pad area will be rotated towards the bottom. I think they do this to help prevent confusion just in case people put the shoes on wrong, but its a bad way to manufacturer shoes as this can cause the clicking sound as the shoes rotate outwards, when its easier just to have the longer pad wear area on the 2 shoes that goes to the leading/front side...which for most experienced mechanics in the end causes less confusion. I also noticed you greased the protruding rests on the backplate to help the shoes slide better as they are pushed outwards, but this may not be necessary other than cleaning that area well and spraying some anti seize and wiping it off well, and this is because certain wrong types of grease can attract the brake dust or rust and cause the shoes to hang up or drag. Either way if you do grease those areas, just use the same brake silicone or Moly intended for brakes and only put a very thin film of it on there (don't glob it up), but again not really necessary if they are cleaned well and just lubricated with special anti-seize brake lubricant. I hope these are helpful hints! Thanks again breakitandlearn for the helpful and informative Post, and I compliment you again for a fine and inspiring video for all the ladies and gents out there!

Tracy Mitchell The adjuster on the driver side is a left hand (reverse) thread and passenger side is right hand thread. Well, at least on a 1998 Corolla. The bolts you would use to push out the drums are M8 X 1.25. Again, this is for a 1998 Corolla.

WOW, I'm truly impressed, and people who know me, know that is rare. Being spiteful toward these ripoff shops (cars, bikes, stereos) is a huge motivator for me as well. People tease my DIY attitude, but it's less risky than the risk of being upsold for every little thing you 'leave to the professionals.' I wish more people had that old 'can-do' attitude. Helpful and very high quality video as well!

Nice job I studied this video and a few other before attempting with my corolla. A few tips: 1.) Use a bar clap during reassembly. It's really a 3 handed operation. With hands free no special tools needed. 2.) Do not use the special spring "tong tool". It has a "point" that is supposed to rest on the shoe. if you're not quick/efficient it will chip the shoe. Use two hands to power that if needed. 3.) Retract the "turnbuckle" adjuster screw as much as possible, so spring will go on easier. 4.) Apply the grease after everything is installed. The drums are "floating" just pull it away from back plate a little and carefully apply grease at the points. 5.) Also(on corolla's) the retaining clip(5/16") is "one time use only" so pickup a few at dealership. During removal just twist/break the old ones off. Enjoy...

Thanks you must have some strong ass fingers because I could not get my clips back on. Will go buy the tool tomorow. BTW the easiest way to do the horseshoe clips is to put two flat head screw drivers back to back and then rotate them against each other. Then push out and hook the inner arch once loose enough. I am glad you showed how you can pop the springs to move the shoes apart so you can get to the clips easily.

It was my first time changing my rear breaks on a toyota celica and got it done. i didn't have enough strength to change the other side but ima do it this weekend. ima try doing your tricks and hopefully it'll make it a lot easier for me. ;) wish me luck!

Pretty good video but missed the oh so important step of adjusting the star after assembly and getting the e-brake to do its job. Supposedly you adjust the star adjuster after the drum is on to get a little drag. SO, make sure you've taken the star adjuster apart cleaned and lubed the thrreads and the spindle (yes, the star separates form its end and is supposed to spin smoothly and easily). Second thing, don't skip cleaning and lubing the e-brake lever and connections.

You are being modest. You did an excellent job with this video. I have changed brakes on other brands of cars but each time it is just a little different. Your video helped me understand the Camry better. To at537: I do this work with simple tools. Pliers, flat head screw drivers etc. This work does not necessarily take special tools although they may be helpful. The pair of pliers with the hooked end can be helpful but I have done that with just a pair of regular pliers.

One safety advice though, when removing/installing the lug nuts manually, never pull, but push down instead with your foot, to avoid injuring your back and if the socket gives out, you won't "fly" backward just like when playing tug of war when your opponent suddenly lets go of the rope while you were pulling him/her towards you.

How can you tell when your rear brakes needs servicing? I mean for the front brake pads, you can tell they need servicing when you start to hear a grinding noise that signifies the brake pads are worn and that the metal part of them is grinding against your metal disc (rotor). And then when you go visually inspect them, you can also inspect the disc and see if that needs to be replaced as well. But for the rear drum brakes and shoes, how do you know? Can you sense it from how your car performs when you brake (like as if the rear part of the car doesn't seem to want to readily stop or something so there is more pressure being put on the front)?!

As I wrote on an other video: if at the start, after removing the two small shoe retaining springs, one simply pulls one shoe out of it's groove in piston then the springs drop out. Do the reverse to refit. Other video shows - first remove bearing carrier with bearing -excellent idea - will do so when the rain stops as unlike when I lived in Rhodesia here in UK I have no back verhanda !

thanks so much for the nice presentation... very nice :) may i add also that the 'star wheel' / turnbuckle adjustment takes a lil finess.. the shoes need to be as close as possible (to the drum) WITHOUT touching.. center the shoes by pulling on the parking brake cable and releasing (thanks ericthecarguy) .. then check for drag.... the 'automatic' feature of the 'star wheel' occurs when the vehicle is stopped while backing up.. I believe that when there is 'play'/ gap between the 'floating ' shoes and the drum..the shoes rotate enough to advance the star, it catches on that 'automatic adjusting lever' and advances it to the next notch.. as the gap becomes smaller the shoes travel less "clockwise' and life is good hehe thanks also trexinvert good tips appreciate you doers of good :D

You adjust the starwheel to make the brake shoes "expand outward" so much until you can barely put brake drum back on.(a tight fit between the brake shoes lining and the inner drum surface. One screwdriver to push away the stopper, another screwdriver to actually turn the starwheel(faster and easier adjustment, and to avoid damaging the "stars" with your screwdriver turning it.)

How did you know how far to adjust the star wheel? My manual says that you do the final adjustment after everything is assembled, and you do this with 2 screwdrivers that slip in through a slot in the backer wheel (i.e. from the back side of the wheel).

Sir my car make squeaking noise from rear wheels when brake is applied. This happens only when the car is sitting over 7 hours of time. The sound goes away after repeated used of the brake pedal like 4 times or less. And, no issues with braking while driving!!! During parking time for over 7 hours gear is engage, hand brake too. The moment the car is took out and brake is pressed, such irritating noise comes from the rear. There are no physical worn on brake parts including the brake shoe.

Sure took a long time to remove the C smush-clips for the handbrake lever pin! I just stick a very big flat-blade scewdriver in there and turn the screwwdriver, like I'm going to loosen, or tighten, a screw. After prying them apart that way I just tap them a bit to loosen them, and then put a small screwdriver between the inside of the C and the pin, and turn - to slide them off the rest of the way. Not sure why you have 2 of them on one pin. Usually there is a spring-steel wave washer on one side, and only one smush-clip - on the other side. I also think you over-squoze the new ones. You just need to squeeze them a little - just enough so they won't fall off, and then just a hair more. And lube the pin. Nice to see you lubed the points on the backing plate where the shoes slide against it. Probably also a good idea to put a Very Thin layer of lube on the ends of the shoes where they contact the piston, and also on their other ends. You don't want to use a lot, and risk it getting into the cylinder. Also lube the star self-adjuster mechanism w the same high-temperature brake lube.
