Alec Gilroy may have been a relatively late star in the Corrie hall of fame, but he became an iconic one, and richly deserves his place there. Roy Barraclough was a wonderful actor. Corrie producers struggled to persuade him to stay in the show for long, as he had itchy feet and loved doing theatre work. Thank the Lord they did persuade him to commit to the stints he completed - his tenure of the Rovers as Bet's husband gave the show a new lease of life. The Gilroys were a superb double act, Bet and Alec were totally believable as a couple, with great onscreen chemistry and superb range, their stories covering comedy and tragedy with equal aplomb. Alec Gilroy is without doubt one of the Street's all-time greats, never to be surpassed God love him!

Yes Roy Barraclough was a superb actor - wonderful in drag with Les Dawson as 'Cissy and Ada' , fantastic as Alec Gilroy. I didn't think his double act with Les could be improved on, then he pairs up with iconic Bet Lynch. What a great team they were - brought new magic to Corrie.

I loved Alec Gilroy, one of very few truly iconic male characters in Coronation Street. Alec's best man (37:00 minutes in, etc) was Elsie Tanner's husband in real life. Tony Hatch, Tony Ward, whatever his name were. He married Pat Phoenix on her deathbed, aye.

Bet & Alec I loved them great comedy & drama and I loved bet the best landlady she’ll always be the Queen of the rovers & Corrie
@alexanderjones95725 жыл бұрын
Don't see why Mike's comment, that he 'hoped Bet had a better life in the future than she'd had in the past' worried Alec. I mean Mike knew she'd not had a brilliant past, and he was just innocently wishing her well!

I didn't now Alex was in when he didn't wear glasses, i been watching on ITV 3 from when bet and Alex ran the rovers, good to see the build up to that on here, the banter between Bet, Alex and Jack was laugh out loud, nowadays Corrie is depressing
@Paulious785 жыл бұрын
He wasnt in it for long, just a few odd episodes in the 1970's as club compere and the artistic agent. He would have a longer stay in the second half of the 1980's finally leaving in 1992, but would return in the late 1990's after Bet left the street.

Please can you tell me the name of the piece of music that is playing when Bet & Alec walk down the isle. It is so familiar, but I cannot place it. Thanks.
@Paulious786 жыл бұрын
I can't be too sure, however, I know that in this episode, am comment is passed as to what music is playing and it was 'O Perfect Love'. Whether this was what Bet walked down to the aisle to or whether it was playing as Alec was waiting for Bet i can't remember, I will have to dig out the full episode and double check

It's ok thanks. I kept humming it over to myself until the words came to me. It is See The Conquering Hero Comes by Handel. :-)

They should write Alec's funeral in the soap.
@Paulious785 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of characters that wouldn't know him, it's the same with Hilda Ogden, not a lot of people would know her. Plus it's the expense of bringing people back for the one or two episodes, either that or recast and I can't see them recasting Bet Lynch, can you?
@Paulious783 жыл бұрын
@Saul Goodman I think the only character left who had a soft spot for him is Rita. Maybe Jenny too.
@richard66583 жыл бұрын
Maybe not a funeral but Rita could mention in conversation she heard he died and leave for the funeral off screen. And then when she returns she could talk about it and Alec's funny stories with people who remember him- Steve who was his in law, the websters, the Battersby's, Ken, Tracey, Roy, the Platts etc.
@007beck93 жыл бұрын
when did bet and Alec first meet
@Paulious783 жыл бұрын
Alec's first appearance was in 1972, so it's possible that they knew of each other especially with them both working around bars. Alec was managing 'The Graffiti Club' in 1986 when the Rovers had it's fire, he opened the bar during the day and was hoping to cash in while the Rovers was being repaired. The graffiti club was situated where the medical centre is now (give or take - artistic license), so practically opposite the Rovers.
