Poor Fred. I know some felt this was not a good exit for Fred. I thought it was alright, although I did think they went too far in blaming Audrey. The best part of the story for me was Ashley's grief. The man who plays him is very underrated.

I was only ever an on-off occasional view or Coronation Street but even I know that that was no way for the writers to give the great Fred Elliot his exit. He deserved better, as did characters like Alma, Mike Baldwin and Jack Duckworth. Their deaths were like an afterthought the writers half-heartedly knocked out in a three minute meeting and it's the reason I never watch the show today. Well, that and the fact that all the new characters are completely uninteresting.
@kylepedley73287 жыл бұрын
You've chosen three really weird examples, there. Fred definitely deserved better, but both Alma and Mike Baldwin got quite powerful final scenes, and Jack Duckworth's final scene, where Vera appears before him, remains possibly the best and most moving soap exit ever. It was beautifully done, and definitely not something you could say was an after-thought. Fred's, however, yes I completely agree.
@kevinlongman0076 жыл бұрын
Jack Duckworth had a great ending with Vera coming for him and so did Alma. Mike died in his 'enemy' Ken's arms which made it so memorable but yes Fred could have had a better exit.

Mrpublicimagelimited It’s not about giving characters an amazing send off. It’s about realistically conveying a working class street and the every day lives of those people who live in it. This scene is perfect in capturing that. Old people, no matter who they are or what they’ve done or what their character is, die of such things. It’s what happens! In my opinion, the fact that he went out in such a way makes it even more powerful, it taps into that nagging idea that life is precious and can be taken away from you at any minute. The fact it happened to such a character makes this even more of a powerful message.
@jsmith545656 жыл бұрын
Thing about Fred's exit is John didn't want a massive deal to be made of it, he just got tired of having to do 5 i think it was episodes a week and was seen more I think to him as a chore than anything barely enjoyable anymore, it's fair enough though respect him for that :)
@therebel43322 жыл бұрын
I think Fred, mikes exits were better than say mad maya/richard hillman for example, younger characters that go out with an explosion/bang. But Mike and Jacks were special and memorable,, esp jack who died alone in the same arm chair Vera died in, something poetic about that, he died of loneliness and that for me was a much better more realistic send off. Vera coming for him was a nice touch, I do believe you see a loved one when the time comes, the brains way of easing the passing, theres somewhere else for you to be now sort of message.

all these "i say" comments are getting old. & i find it really cruel how they let him die on his wedding day, he could have at least got married first. he was the best most entertaining actor in the whole history of coronation street. disgraceful i say, DISGRACEFUL.

I remember my dad joking to me at the time saying he heard Fred would discover Charlie and Maria's affair and when Charlie learnt about this, he'd threaten Fred so much, resulting in his heart attack. Would have been sadder but then it may have given Bev more of a reason to hate Charlie and lay off Audrey.

Aw,bless him.There are so many powerful characters who've left the Street 1 way or another.I love Corrie but it has rather become a watered down version of itself now.Hilda & Stan,Mike,Alma,Bet,Betty,Blanche & so many others.The younger ones,whilst good enough in their own way simply don't have the gravitas that the older characters did.Ken & Dreary are a joke,Rita & Norris rarely work together now & Emily,well,'nuff said.Some of the storylines have been barking mad as well.John Stape,anyone?!

Fred and Ashley were like Arkwright and Granville. Imagine them, having the butchers on the same road as the shop. That would of been brilliant. 😅😅😅 Just picturing Fred and Arkwright having an argument in the street, feuding over there shops. Corner shop, I say corner shop. Arkwright I say Arkwright, why are you selling those. Sausages I say sausages, If you want steak, come next door, I say next door. Fred, if you dddddd. If you dddd. Coughs. If you ddddd. Don't like this shop. You know w.w. w. w. What you can do. Our Ashley, I say our Ashley come out here now I say now. G.g.g.g Granville.. F. F. F. F. Fetch a gun.
