Kudos, Steve. What a brilliant idea to throw a welcome home party for someone like Jim - the guy who was perpetually angry BEFORE he was injured, not to mention an opportunity for this newly disabled raging alcoholic to watch his guests drink alcohol while he cannot. It's this kind of ridiculous storyline that beggars belief.

Despite being a Corrie addict, and endlessly grateful to Eve for having this wonderful channel (which I watch everyday), I cannot find a single redeeming feature in any episode for the whole month of May 1998. It just seems that after the high of Deirdre's trial and fight for freedom, everything then goes downhill faster than Jim MacDonald off scaffolding. The Des-Samantha saga - "I'm pregnant, no I'm not, yes I am but I'm getting rid of it, no I'm not getting rid of it, maybe I was lying - but was that about the pregnancy or the termination, you have to guess" nearly made me scream. Why on earth didn't Des say, "ok, let's wait a few months, see what turns up, get a DNA test, and make plans from there on." Natalie could see Samantha was just playing games with Des to cause trouble between them and split them up. Des, for all his experience with women, was seemingly blind to it! And as for dopey Nick Tilsley's obsession with Darren Whateley, putting his wife in serious danger - all because he wanted to know 'why'. WHY!! Yet when he's told responds with, "I don't believe you!" Aargh!

i know. it's just one misery-laden storyline to the next. from deidre, to zoe, to zoe's baby, to this and that. remember when corrie was light and comical, with only the occasional tragedy. when social interaction was the main focus of the programme. now it just seems like arguments or whining, or crying, with some deterministic trope to dig the character out of a plot hole; like jim's accident that brings the family back together, when it should his split apart years ago, and throw to the four corners of the earth. i'm always reminded of the shart tongues of hilda, bet and fred. the occasional warm show of love between hilda and stan; between len and rita, while having that bubbling subversive relationship with elsie tanner. there were the comical antics of fred gee and eddie yeats, and even mike's tyranny in the workplace would often show the happy spirit of the working classes. it seems they just shifted the focus from dialogue to drama, and dialogue is now all the poorer.

You’re spot on there with all of that! The comedy that Bill Podmore brought to the show in ‘76 was a joy to behold (I recommend his book by the way). I adored the scenes between Annie Walker, Bet, Betty & Fred.. and of course the brilliant trio of Stan, Hilda & Eddie! I’m so grateful to ProfessionalGun66 for putting it on here first… I laughed my socks off throughout lockdown, only wish I could erase my memory ha! I’ll watch it again soon (currently doing Eastenders from the start).

@@EveHenleySpread yes, it is a shame they didn't invest in the development of characters in the show. i just can't help but feel these characters (of the later 90s) are very one-dimensional. sally is so pathetic compared to when she first appeared. and gail was such a vivacious character before she married brian. but even there it's fair to say women change relatively once they are married and have children; and we have to remember this was still a fairly paternalistic society back then. even in the 80s, when they were bringing in new characters they still had several dimensions. like jack and vera. even though they had a volatile marriage, there were tendentious aspects to their characters; vera was loyal to her friends, but quick to anger. jack was brow-beaten and furtive yet thought he was god's gift to women; even though 99.99% of women wouldn't have touched him with a barge-pole. there just seem to be no joie de vivre in these later characters. i remember when when hilda first made vera's jaw, literally, drop, that had me chuckling quite a bit, from a single line of dialogue 😄 i don't dispute it must be hard to remain consistent in an ever-changing society, to reflect the good and the bad. but there seems to be that absence of charm, of characters and their relationships that would draw you and repel you depending on the circumstance. now (well, here in the later 90s) i just feel tense, or frustrated with much of the characters and how they deal with situations. it is, nevertheless, still interesting to look back on these episodes, and seen the relative decline of the show, and how this edifice started to crumble.

Like I said, I’m currently doing and Eastenders marathon from the very start and it’s pretty clear Julia Smith & Tony Holland (the creators) wanted to make it a far cry from what Corrie had become i.e. about real life issues, cot death, deadly attackers on the loose, AIDS etc. All that is fine, but it’s not what I personally want to watch from Corrie… I loved the fact it was almost a fantasy world fairly well removed from reality! Of course they must have felt the pressure to change with Eastenders beating them in the ratings but I guess I’m just a sentimental soul at heart and I couldn’t carry on watching Corrie after the mid 90s.

@carasmith549 As I have stated 4 years and 9 months in the future Ashley tore Ken off several strips because he heard Ken Barlow was prepared to give Aiden Critchley the benefit of the doubt that he did not kill his missis Maxine. Did you ever see that episode? I know Ashley was grieving over Maxine death, but it is no good if the wrong person is sent to prison for Maxine's death. What Ken had been doing for Aiden Critchley which was standing by him when everyone was about to condemn Aiden was no different from what Ashley PEACKCOCK had been doing for Zoe. I reckon Ashley's upset over Maxine's death clouded Ashley's memory.
@carasmith549
@carasmith549 Жыл бұрын
Yes that's right. But perhaps the difference was that Ashley was so-called "in love" with trashy Zoe, whereas Aiden (later on) was nothing to him. So Aiden got no mercy, whereas Ashley would pretty much forgive Zoe for lacing his cornflakes with strychnine.
@simonshreeve5580
@simonshreeve5580 Жыл бұрын
@@carasmith549 The point you made I have noted. But I can't help thinking it boiled down to a case of Don't do as I do, do as you are told. Because Ken Barlow was willing to be charitable and give Aiden the benefit of the doubt that he did not kill Maxine Ashley banned Ken from coming to Maxine's funeral which I thought was a bit much. 45 years earlier from February 2003 a person who murdered another person was hanged. The procedure was not Abolish until 1965. In February 1958 if a person had the evidence against them in a murder case and the man or women was innocent it was tough luck. The accused died. Therefor Ken did not want to see the wrong person go to prison. It would be no good to Ashley if Maxine's real murderer was roaming around up to no good.

ugh, i know. he's probably the replacement for curly; the sad, tragi-comical figure that is always denied true happiness. and that zoe storyline was just woeful. a character that has zero redeeming qualities. someone who continually dragged down everyone around her, and displayed zero remorse for any of her actions. wow. the writers must have really enjoyed writing that purgatorial nonsense. probably explains what happens later. and as for that affectation, i sure hope it's real, because why? why replace those ts for ks? sekkled?!

I find it hard to understand Ashley. Ashley feels sorry for Zoe when she loses it by setting fire to a Baby's pram. Yet about four years and nine months later Ashley has a right go at Ken when he was prepared to give Aiden Critchley the benefit of the doubt that Aiden did not kill Maxine. It wouldn't be proper justice for Ashley if the wrong person got done for Maxine's murder.

I wonder if Carolyn Pickles and Gwynneth Powell who played the headmistress Mrs. McKluskey in Grange Hill are cousins. I say that because they look like each other.

I think we all know that there is background noise soundtrack playing in the Rovers scenes. However, i have noticed that there is a woman on the soundtrack with a sort of cackly, wheezy laugh, a cross between Betty and Vera. Almost every scene, like clockwork she can be heard there, cackling away. Once heard, you can't unhear it 😂😂😂

LOL bit of a stupid line when the police asked Fiona if Steve was the father of Morgan (now missing, abducted by human garbage Zoe). Fiona's answer is, "No, he's one of you lot." As if "policeman" is a race.

Between 4:03:58 and 4:04:57 this just serves Les Battersby right. Unfortunately some of Les's personality rubs of on his daughter Leanne. About sixteen and a quarter years later when Leanne falls for Yasmeen son Carl Nazir she uses her father Les's characteristic as an excuse to stop Leanne and Carl being a couple.

At 3:57:40 the woman who opened the door to Les Battersby played DCI Kim REID in The Bill and later played the part of Alan Turner's lady-friend Shelley in Emmerdale. Her name is Carolyn Pickles. I must say she looks in good nick for 46. C.P. only looks 42.

Between 2:04:17 and 2:05:45 Ashley has been pleading on Zoe's behalf with regards to taking the baby. Yet when Ashley got to hear about Ken trying to plead Aiden Critchley's case hence giving Aiden the benefit of the doubt that he did not murder Maxine, Ashley tore Ken off several strips, and in truth Aiden was innocent and had been neatly framed by that bastard Richard Hillman. Whereas in Zoe's case she actuallyn had done something wrong. She took Fiona's baby without her consent.
