Airlines are slashing flights and parking planes to cope with coronavirus and a drop in air travel. For pilots and flight attendants, the near-halt of the industry is a shock, after years of record profits and full planes. Yet some are wondering why flights continue taking off nearly empty. You then try to align democrats giving knee jerk reactions to big business and not wanting to bailout necessary businesses but fail to remember that Democrats bailed out plenty of businesses when the financial crisis hit. James No US airline CEO’s are billionaires. They don’t own the airline. These stock buybacks planned by the revenue management team is a big problem though. The airline industry is different when it comes to its operations. A lot of CEO’s such as Ed Bastian took a full pay cut for at least six months. Also Southwest and Delta Air Lines have given back billions of dollars to their employees over the last five or so years although they did not save up enough money for a crisis like this. It’s like they are too big to fail, but that doesn’t only have to do with the CEO salary.

This shutdown is hard on everyone. Everyone. Most airlines had record profits by nickel and diming the American Public to death. Extra charges to change flights, extra bag charges, extra bag weight charges, charges to switch flights. Each person on a flight probably paid a different ticket cost to go on the very same flight. Less leg room, higher costs, crowded ppl together to maximize profits. . Cash registers at the airlines were humming. Profits soaring. Yes, airlines are important to our economy. But so many airlines are in business to make heaps of $$ at the expense of the American consumer... and they are happy to do it! 💰💰💰

Then they go broke. The shareholders lose a planeload of money. Nobody promised them that they would make money. They knew that stock was a risk, when they bought it. So then the distressed assets go on the auction block, & are sold for pennies on the dollar. A venture firm comes along & buys up the remains, & starts a new, low cost airline, using the equipment they acquired at bargain basement prices. See... no bailouts required. I don't have a large personal investment portfolio...a few thousand dollars total that took years to build. But I still own Southwest because I believe in their service and business model. I think they'll weather this and come out stronger, but I chose to hold on to that investment when all this started tumbling because they are an ethical company that takes care of it's employees and passengers more than most, doing so at an affordable (and transparent) price point. There are a handful of other companies that do the same. We should always put our money where our mouth is, whether investing or buying from companies we genuinely trust and share our values whenever we possibly can. In that vain, I want like hell to stop using Amazon right now, but there just isn't a viable, ethical competitor, and yes, I'd accept some sacrifices to have that (longer delivery times / higher prices / etc...) for a company that treats it's employees well and is truthful about it's business and it's model.

I like how everyone complains about a system we created with our needs that could be solved or at least improved if we were less rigid in our own thinking. Instead of blame, there should be personal accountability.and responsibility. This applies to everyone. I’m not pointing fingers.

@@yd756 Sure I care, theres verying degrees of course but, their situation isn't much different than anyone elses. Besides pilots, mechanics, and flight attendants, the rest of airline jobs aren't that great. But then again, this is also really not good for Boeing either. Maybe companies should have been managing profits better, the corporate trend of stock buybacks combined with low tax liabilities are going to leave us all busted.

I know everyone sees the airlines as big bad corporations but there are hundreds of thousands of people who work for these companies who are just average people who will lose their jobs if these companies go under. There are pilots, flight attendants, ticket agents, gate agents, catering, cleaners, ground crew and many more who make these companies work who will be negatively affected by this.

Surprised that they didn't mention anything about how not cancelling flights allows them to not have to give refunds for those flights. Sure some have been "refunding" with airline credit but that doesn't hurt as much as having to give everyone real cash back all at once. But yeah...they expect us to believe they're continuing to fly out of the goodness of their hearts....

HeyMJ It’s not going to matter in the long term if a pilot’s record has an empty spot in a pandemic. You may get a little rusty, but a year isn’t long enough to completely forget those kinds of skills. You could say that some generic office worker is essential because they are required to keep clocking in & retain highly specialized knowledge of the beautiful desk they sit at. These airlines need to be shut down completely.

I have little sympathy for the airline industry. They nickel and dime customers, crappy service and spent billions of dollars on buybacks for the rich CEOs and now they want tax dollars to bail them out. I think bailout money should have conditions place on it that companies who did this shouldn't or receive less on a scale just as the scale for people who earn more than $75,000 a year.
