As with all Marjorie Alllingham plots, you have to concentrate! This was hugely satisfying. What a wonderful narrator Francis Matthews was. He understood every nuance. Thank you!

Thank you for this splendid story by Margery Allingham superbly narrated by Francis Mathews. The main character Albert Campion always has such exhausting trials to face until he can barely stand up. It was a lovely to hear his return home to Amanda and his son Rupert at last. Thank you for uploading. Xxxx

And, thankfully, their well-spoken accents, their educated understanding of the English language were developed in an era before the masses fell into the execrable habits of wring things such as “lol” or “lmao” instead of expressing any intelligent sentiment.

Unfortunately we lost Francis Matthews, a wonderful actor/narrator in 2014. We are so incredibly lucky to have his ingenious work living on, available to delight & entertain. I'm an extremely fussy audiobook listener, unfortunately but he is one of a small group whom I adore. Love an English narration. 💜

The narrator really captures the extreme arrogant silliness of the Dowager. Not that he does anything badly here.

All we need now are Fashion in Shrouds and Flowers for the Judge. Shrouds: the abridged version with Peter Davison, AND the full version read by Francis Matthews. I know Fashion in shrouds is "problematic", but it's worth reading Allingham's original version before she cut 25,000 words from it after the War.

Lots of the books have a different title in the U. S. and this is one of them. I think the use of “pidgin” is different enough here on the western side of the Atlantic that I sort of forgive the publishers.

This, I think, is my favorite book. Unless it's The Case of the Late Pig which hasn't been uploaded ... or ... Death of a Ghost which also hasn't been uploaded either. But they MUST be narrated by Francis Matthews who IS Campion.

Just returned from years overseas on a secret mission, private detective Albert Campion is relaxing in his bath when his servant Lugg and a lady of unmistakably aristocratic bearing appear in his flat carrying the corpse of a woman. At first Campion is unwilling to get involved, but he is forced to bring his powers of protection to bear on the case, and to solve not only the mystery of the murdered woman but also the alarming disappearance of some well-known art treasures.

It’s an acquired taste like Lord Peter Whimsey by Dorothy Sayers. It’s from what they call the ‘Golden Age’ of detective stories, which also include Agatha Christie.
