A change to the fatigue system seems to have slipped in during a hotfix patch. It makes a huge difference to how long you can stay awake so it's time to get educated.

Oh no no no see, realism can only be implemented when it's MAKING YOUR LIFE AND EXPERIENCE HARDER AND LESS FUN, that's the point, see? If it's turning your character into a fat sack of protein capable of even less than you can do in real life, it's working properly, if there's anything I've learned from CDDA it's that, considering my 20 stat across the board characters all infected with a space slime that turns people into superpowered mutants before they zombify are more useless than my fat ass.

Really sucks that the game seems to dislike adding realistic elements if it makes surviving easier. Like in a life or death situation you aren't gonna care how tired you are, YOU ARE GOING TO RUN. Will it injure you? Oh most definitely, as soon as the adrenaline wears off you're gonna be in a world of hurt. But there is no way you're just gonna be like "Man I'm tired time to stop running even though there is a zombie near me".

I think changing so cold does not affecting stamina whatsoever is debatable, but I do like the idea of temperature having a possible positive effect. I was thinking about how a bit of cold or heat can stimulate the body, and maybe there could be a system where just a little bit of temperature change can help keep your character awake. You know how if you stay in a hot or cold space for long enough it feels normal, but when you leave you realize the temperature changed? Something like that. Just thinking out loud, I'm not familiar with zomboid.

Reducing your body temperature reduces how much cortisol your brain creates, the hormone responsible for stress. When you're crutching on adrenaline and stress to keep you going after being awake for 48+ hours, even just the slightest decrease in cortisol can knock you the flip out. Im getting pretty tired of these massive changes to the balance of the game being stealthily slipped in to hotfixes. The change to hunger was huge enough that it should have headlined the patch notes but I didn't even notice it until I realized all my normally underweight characters were now starving to death no matter how much ice cream and peanut butter I ate. This is more of the same. I was wondering why my fit characters that used to be able to smash up dozens of zombies with a crowbar were now getting exhausted after fighting 8 or 9 zombies, glad to see the confirmation that it wasn't all in my head and something did actually change, very annoyed that *this change isn't even mentioned in any of the patch notes*.
@nihminus6612

Agreed. The food change is still the worst offender (for me personally, since I play with sleep turned off thus no exhaustion) IMO. Here's to hoping they either revert the food change or give food a proper bump up in the calories they need rather than forcing you to stuff your face with tons of food constantly.

Exhaustion seriously needs a rework, if so many private servers are turning it off and I've seen a lot of comments of people who also prefer playing with it off, then it just plain doesn't work as a gameplay mechanic. Heck, I even remember having a fitness character who got exhausted pretty regularly from running, bashing and melee but like... it wasn't that much? He had eaten well that day, no thirst and light clothing? I thought it was bullshit everytime the exhausted moodle shows up

I always pick athletic and I make sure to start with fitness 9 because going below that basically disables the athletic buff, my character with lvl 5 long blunt, lvl 9 fitness, lvl 6 strength, gets moderately exerted killing just 15 zombies with a crowbar, I know short blunts are broken because they barely exert your character so I plan on testing it. Either way I can't even imagine playing a character that has less than 5 fitness.

@@steveweast475 I play a character with less than 5, infact 0 fitness and 2 strength, I play a heavily modded game so it's hard af even when the loot isn't low and the cars are plenty, thing is, I can take a lot of zombies out as I see them, could go up to 5 or 6, but the moment 3 zombies are together I have to leave the area, which makes getting a car essential for that exact reason, I must clear up areas of zombies by driving them away before doing anything, which makes it harder to get gas at gas stations for example, the boost I get from the negative traits does give me a lot of skills and it would be a fantastic build if not for 1 thing... How the fuck do they see me from so far away, like I don't understand, I spawn in, pick some stuff up in 5 minutes a zombie is already at the window about to break it, on times it didn't happen as soon as I step out on the street 2 zombies are already on me, and by the time I either kill them or try to lose them by going around a house THE WHOLE FUCKING NEIGHBORHOOD IS BEHIND ME, literally 8-13 zombies get up to follow me out of fucking nowhere, no matter the fog the night not even if I'm sneaking up, it pisses me off how much vision the zombies have. They see me from so far away as soon as I step out any zombie looking in my direction gets alerted, you know when you are in a street and zombies have direct visual contact with you, like the amount from which they can see you is greater than the amount you A LIVING BEING can see, even if you pick all the traits to give you better vision, worst of all, all the zombies that are looking away will randomly turn around and chase you, and if not other zombies make them join the chase.

@@TheTingcat its because the fatigue system in zomboid is unrealistic and shit it would be trivial to tweak some numbers to get outcomes that better simulate reality. when we sprint 100m we are so exhausted we can barely walk, but after getting our breath back we could probably do it again after a minute even if a couple seconds slower. basically there is no system in the game to simulate cardiovascular exhaustion and i have no idea why and the existing system which i guess is somewhat closer to simulating muscular exhaustion is still off. similar to the sprinting example after a few reps of feats of near maximal strength exertion there should be a huge drop off in effective strength. think after doing 10 deadlifts being destroyed, or not being able to lift your arms after a hard set of bench. but then after a minute or two of rest it should be totally possible to do another "set" with 90-95% effectiveness, and this should be repeatable a decent number of times. with intense work there needs to be much more rapid dropoff in effective strength couple with much more rapid recovery it wouldnt even be much work this is the mind boggling thing. all of the code infrastructure is already in place. it would basically involve a copy/paste of the code for the existing fatigue system, then adjusting some numerical values that define the rate of increase and rate of recovery for each of the fatigue attributes ( cardio/muscular), then defining which activies are hampered by what degree by each type of fatigue e.g. you can smash a bunch of skulls with a fire axe until your arms cant move anymore, but after that you should be able to sprint away with 90% efficiency to safety to rest your arms before coming back to have another go at 90% efficiency after a 10 minute breather

@@Six_slotted I'd expect for physical "skills" something along the likes of reading a book. When you exert yourself A LOT, you gain a bonus to gaining experience in Strength/Fitness for some time, meaning each further training or exertion contributes better (ofcourse to some extent) towards it all. On the other hand, if you had a calm day or two, without any heavy lifting, running or training, that same bonus should diminish and slowly get back to +0%. So in short, you would get a bonus to gaining experience based off how much you've done in the past couple days (perhaps up to a week). Also, stamina (as a skill) should also be a thing. There are people that have low stamina and exert themselves fast, just like those that could go on and on for hours without ragged breath. I'd find it more realistic than the current implemantation for sure.

That is essentially an additional wakeful, stack those two together you can fight almost all day without getting drowsy even then your character wakes up early and you can starting fighting before the sun rises :)

Goes to show that whatever issue you have with the game, there's always a way to fix it, and that's one of the reasons I love this game so much !

@@bigblue344 That is absolutely correct, when Fallout 4 came out I dropped it after playing for about and hour, but around 2 years later I gave it another shot, but with mods, and I've since racked up over 3k hours on the game lol. But I see it more as a blessing than a curse, because it's not bugfixes and community patches that made the game enjoyable, but being able to change it to fit my idea of a good time, and the same thing holds true for PZ, if it wasn't for the mods enhancing my experience, I probably would have dropped the game by now.

as someone who participates in combat sports and trains every day, i can say if they want to make the stamina/fatigue system more realistic (assuming your character is fit), they need to make the stamina consumption for jogging way lower, and ramp it up way higher for fighting. i can skip rope for 30 minutes straight, then do 5 minutes of strength work as my "resting time" then keep going with the rope. but 3, 3 minute rounds of combat will leave you completely exhausted gasping for air, at least from my experience, and we just use our fists and legs, i imagine swinging a weapon around gets a lot more tiresome way quicker. your pz character basically spends all day long jogging and fighting, it should have the stamina of a greek warrior after a couple months tbh.

This is a great break down of what's going on, thank you for explaining (and correcting so we can get the right info!). I kind of understand heat being a big factor. This past summer I ran 3.1 miles (5k) in 95 degree heat and I felt like I was dying during the first mile. The next week I ran 6.2 miles (10k) in 70 degree weather and I was comfortable till the end even though my pace was about 2 minutes per mile faster. That said, this system feels kind of bs. Like you say, the temperature range at which the character is reasonably effective is simply too small to be workable. Real people both can push through and have a wider range of temperatures at which pushing through is not necessary. As some people have mentioned, exertion does build particularly if you're carrying a lot of weight and having to be hypervigilant, but it feels unnecessarily punishing that no matter how much fitness you build you will never be able to jog down two streets. It makes fitness feel like it should be a much more basic part of a character, like "has gotten out of bed in the last two months at some point" rather than actual fitness. I'm definitely hoping for a little bit of balancing here, as with calories. I can't imagine playing with anything except overweight now, and I really don't like how characters that were great a month ago are now no good. I wish I could keep the game code the same with each save file so I could continue playing by the same rules. A character that was suitable before now is extremely unsuitable? It feels like I'm playing League haha, not exactly what I'm looking for.

You can totally go back to older builds via the betas on steam. Especially if you dont enjoy the calorie usage change as not much else changed that matters from the build before it, or as other people put it. Turn off nutrition until build 42 and the whole crafting remake comes out.

I noticed that in my heavily modded run I have to sleep twice a day as I'm reaching "ridiculously tired" by that point[*], but I thought it was due to excessive amount of traits I have that allow my to get a full rest with about 5h. I was already running half naked because with full protection gear I was often getting sunstruck. But I wonder, how long was this system in? I didn't have problems on multiplayer in like September when I got the game. [*]Since the mods I use and character I created promote use of guns, I don't have to worry about loose of melee damage, but falling down unconscious in the middle street is a real fear of mine.

sleepiness is turned off by default on multiplayer servers if you dont touch the settings when creating a world and I figure the natural evolution of the game is learning to use the restrictions/rulesets that are standard to multiplayer to not learn bad habits so I just play on multiplayer now even if I'm playing alone in my own world it really changes how you play, cuz speeding time up to skip night time or read a book or exercise are are no longer options, and a lot of perks (like lucky) are unavailable but never getting sleepy, and exhaustion never being permanent, means you're not chained to a bed highly recommend trying it out for a change of pace

Tiredness in this game is honestly ridiculous. I mean for example, one day I wake up at 9am, and drive to the bridge at West Point. I arrive by 6pm and had to fight about 30 Zs taking me to 7pm. My character is now drowsy, 50% melee damage loss. And within a few minutes in real life, he’s tired, a 90% damage debuff! This is without any tiredness traits. Youre telling me it’s 7.30pm, my guy woke up at 9, and he’s now so tired he hits for 10% of his usual strength!? It’s total bullshit, I wish there was a mod that massively nerfed how strong the tired moodles are.

This can be avoided with adrenaline. The character, when paniced, should get a pump of adrenaline to combat fatigue. The more paniced, the more adrenaline is used. Adrenaline should regenerate constantly over time, where even the lowest panic moodle only stops it's regeneration. At full panic, the adrenaline should last one hour per level of fitness. On top of this, the more paniced, the more buffs the character should get. At full panic, the character should get a 100% bonus to both speed and strength, while also completely ignoring pain. This would help with realism, as it didn't make sense that, after a mere day of exertion, my character would just give up and die to the zombies

I don’t really like this change. I’ve experienced it in game and I’ll say that cutting down trees shouldn’t cause you to pass out in 3 or 4 hours. I’ve worked hard long days before. Sue you get tired but a little rest can get you back in the game. Plus a person who exercises often would feel the effects much less then one who doesn’t as their body would bounce back to fill relatively easily.

They try to patch out playstyles for some reason, same reason they made sheet ropes something that zombies target. Sure, you can work around it, but it's easily the least attractive thing about this games dev cycle imo. It's a unique game, but the development would arguably be farther along if they worked on the game and not how we play it. Still hanging in there due to the amount of customization you can employ for each playthrough. + mods of course, the game wouldn't be half of what it is without the community and their continuing updates after these hot fixes, patches, etc.
