Honestly, this song just perfectly encapsulates what pelicans just… are. They strut around like they own the place, they eat anything that fits in their mouths, they’ve been here for at least 30 million years. They’d probably think highly of themselves if they were sapient.

For those who don't know (and haven't read the description), this is actually sampled from the beginning of a piece by Edward Lear, a nonsense poet, the piece called "Pelican Chorus" and it's quite longer than the song.

i hate not being able to read the lyrics while listening to music so King and Queens of the Pelicans we; No other Birds so grand we see! None but we have feet like fins! With lovely leathery throats and chins! Ploffskin, Pluffskin, Pelican jee! We think no birds so happy as we! Plumpskin, Ploshkin, Pelican jill! We think so then, and we thought so still! We live on the Nile. The Nile we love. By night we sleep on the cliffs above; By day we fish, and at eve we stand On long bare islands of yellow sand. And when the sun sinks slowly down And the great rock walls grow dark and brown, Where the purple river rolls fast and dim And the Ivory Ibis starlike skim, Wing to wing we dance around, Stamping our feet with a flumpy sound, Opening our mouths as Pelicans ought And this is the song that we nightly snort: King and Queens of the Pelicans we; No other Birds so grand we see! None but we have feet like fins! With lovely leathery throats and chins! Ploffskin, Pluffskin, Pelican jee! We think no Birds so happy as we! Pluffskin, pluffskin, pelican jill! We think so then, and we thought so still!

Ah, but pelicans have what are known as totipalmate feet - all four toes are webbed. Most web-footed birds are only palmate, or three webbed toes with the hallux in the back. That being said, so are cormorants, gannets, boobies, anhingas, and frigatebirds...but best not tell the pelicans that.

@YuukiHyouketsu
@YuukiHyouketsu 7 жыл бұрын
Well... yes. That's why I'm saying that Pelican's We makes less sense, and not more sense. Both songs can have stories while my original comment still holds true. Pelican's We is just way more ambiguous than The Moss. I know that The Moss has a story (The song full of Edward Lear poems and childhood nursery rhymes, thus hinting at childhood and how those stories can be just as real to children as the facts stated in the first verse. Or, it could be taken as commentary on the loss of childhood as we age). Again, Pelican's We is just less specific. And that's what I love about This kind of music. It makes you think.
@DrPivot98

5UNNYR4Y3 Well i look a parts of the lyrics such as "We think no birds so grand/happy as we" "Opening our mouths as pelicans ought(as we're supposed to)" or "none but we have feet like fins(we are naturally better than others)" I could be far off wrong but I think this is kinda of general finger point to corrupt communism or nationalism

Absolutely love this song. It’s also fun to watch people in the comments try to find a deeper meaning to a song who’s lyrics are quite literally lines from a nonsense poem. For some reason I just specifically love the way he says ‘no’ in the second line of the chorus. It sounds weirdly familiar, but also just… right.

Here’s the Lyrics, if anyone needs them! King and Queen of the Pelicans we; No other Birds so grand we see! By night we sleep on the cliffs above. By day we fish, and at eve we stand On long bare islands of yellow sand. And when the sun sinks slowly down And the great rock walls grow dark and brown, Where the purple river rolls fast and dim And the ivory Ibis starlike skim, Wing to wing we dance around, - Stamping our feet with a flumpy sound, - Opening our mouths as Pelicans ought, And this is the song we nightly snort: King and Queen of the Pelicans we; No other Birds so grand we see! None but we have feet like fins! With lovely leathery throats and chins! Ploffskin, Pluffskin, Pelican jee! We think no birds so happy as we! Plumpskin, Ploshkin, Pelican jill! We think so then, and we thought so still!
