Cossack Arrives

9 жыл бұрын(22 Feb 1940) The Royal Navy pulls off a daring raid to rescue seamen from the German prison ship 'Altmark'. The destroyer 'Cossack' chased the 'Altmark' into a Norwegian fjord and after dark a boarding party released the British prisoners.

My Uncle served on the Cossack. Went down with her in 42.

Brilliant story about the heroism of the crew of HMS Cossack! In the UK there were at least 21 ships with the name Cossack from the beginning of the 19th century.

I wonder how many of the rescued merrchant seamen were sunk again later in the war?

The figures for the Merchant Navy was a loss of 25% in WW2.

I asked my grandad that question recently as his father was one of those rescued. I was surprised when he said they all went back out to sea with the convoys !

They were happy to do their duty, reguardless of risk.
