Күн бұрын

Let's get real and break it down. We've been livng aboard Balachandra for 1 full year here in the North Atlantic and we're ready to share what it actually cost for us to buy a boat, sail it home, and live aboard it year round through a harsh Canadian winter. In this video we talk about hidden costs, unexpected expenses, delivery costs, marina fees, heating, haul out\launch and budgetting for living on the cheap while cruising.
If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like!
In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my KZfaq sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

Hello from another small sailing channel! $1000/month seems to be our average expense, too. This last month was $558 but we have more expensive months too. $1100 for 7 months of food? Not bad at all to eat well. Just wait until you are living on anchor full time. No more club fees or mooring cost! That's where the real freedom is. Cheers -E&C

@@ugotlj4133 When I sailed down the west coast from Seattle to Panama I anchored about everywhere. I only used one marina for a day to visit someone who lived on land in the LA area. If you get away from the cities (and I don't like California cities) there are places. The west coast of the US isn't the best place to anchor. Not much protection and it's deep.

@@ugotlj4133 no Florida is worse. Trick is get a copy of the real law that applies and carry it on the boat. Make the officer read it. They already know they are breaking the law and back down when they see the paper. I no longer know the law in CA. I know you have a LOT if them out there. Not my favorite place. But best place to live on a boat is "anyplace else". Once you leave the US it gets cheap and easy. Mexico on the Pacific side is especially easy. I don't check my email much for KZfaq. For over 10 years, I used to skipper one for a sailing school and really got to love the boat. You explanation of costs is brilliant and the topic on which I was searching. Yes, I think living aboard, if you like the lifestyle, is not too expensive or out of reach. More to follow...

This sum is not what everyone anywhere should expect to pay for one year, pay attention to which costs are NOT universal. People(especially on budget) dont typically hire a delivery captain(1600) and then proceed to spend a whole winter parked in expensive marina(~1000? +1800). Which all adds up to about 1/3. Other than that, thx for the breakdown and fair winds.

Hey, guys, great video. I am sure any duo living on a boat would have a mix of different expenses based on location, costs unique to the particular boat they bought, etc., so the final cost could vary wildly. It seems some of the comments below skewer you on that... but we appreciate that you shared what it cost YOU in your unique situation... in a very nice format. Well done. :)

Sailing Balachandra: Comparing that to purchasing a House and all the cost that follow that on a monthly base, and include what you need to set aside for regular maintenance, then gas, electricity, and government taxes, and so fort, i say you buying a boat to live on, with the cost you put out here is way cheaper than a land locked house, Can$ 575. A month is not bad at all, and you are living for your self and not with parent. Some of the cost you mention are “onetime” cost and have to be divided trough the the life span of it, and food cost i would say you get out on the lower side, simply due to the storage space and cooler space that you might not have compare to a house, so all in all, you doing darn great in my opinion. So keep on, and have fun, and happy upcoming holidays and new year...

Great Question! - Yes, when the temperature outside our glass hull is below 0 deg. c. we get dew point condensation on the inside of the hull. Most of it just drips down into the bildge, however some of the freeboard hull is covered in teak so we leave those cupboard doors open and allow air to circulate. We also have a small 12v dehumidifier that runs all the time, even in summer.

for you guys is about $11,200 start up roughly about $933 a Month for the first year $4030 for the Winter, $600 for the Summer $385.83 a Month every year after. This not including any Added cost of Repairs yet does include yearly haul outs right? So that is a plus of minus if you want to forgo that. This I'm assure does not include the cost of your boat. So if you are looking Please add 20% Down with a Credit Score of 670+ would also help.

Startup is not cheap, but once everything is in place it can be a cheap way to live. Clearly marinas are expensive... TOO EXPENSIVE so you have to decide what you actually want to do with the boat. If you're going off-shore (as we are this fall) you'll spend more for maintenance and re-fitting but if you just want to hang out at the dock, rigging is not so important. Once you untie the lines and live off the hook the marina fees magically disappear ;)

Wow - expensive! But still cheaper than rent :) But in the South East USA, *way* cheaper - even if you rent a slip. I wouldn't include the food budget in your numbers - that's going to vary a LOT by person - and you have to eat wherever you live - it's not really a boat expense. Buying propane to cook with would be a boat-related expense.

Ok you never included the actual price of the boat... You have a section called "buying & bringing back the boat." I got my calculator out and followed along. Standing rigging. Oh and the radar just crapped out. Shit happens off shore for sure. I had an engine fire in the middle of a deep water ship channel......Coast Guard had to drag me to a marina. That sucked. Speaking of dragging, that was just after I dragged into Sherman Island and ran aground. Yup. A legit Jack London move. Not fun but at least I get to tell the story!

I'm a Canadian in the Emirates looking at used liveaboard boats internationally and the issue of getting the boat here has been a question. I hadn't considered hiring a captain. How did you find the appropriate captain? Did you travel with as crew? Great looking boat. What's the beam?
@SailingBalachandra
@SailingBalachandra 5 жыл бұрын
I used a broker to buy the boat. The Brokerage has lots of local connections including a few able captains who ran deliveries so I was able to make the arrangements. The C&C44 has a beam of 13.25’
@AlistairAVogan

Sailing Balachandra decent beam. Must make things comfortable. In my search for the right boat the beam is high on my list.

People have different opinions - larger boats mean larger costs per foot at marinas, however, a larger boat will be more stable and comfortable at sea. Pay close attention to the "length at the water line - LWL"... Balachandra is 35' at the waterline even though she's 44' long.
@AlistairAVogan
@AlistairAVogan 5 жыл бұрын
Sailing Balachandra Yeah. Stability and comfort are important for us (though we want to sail full time when the time is right, and everywhere). Also: versatility. Having an adjustable keel seems advantageous for those shallow passages or areas you might want to explore as well. Was this on your list on priorities? Since beginning to watch your videos I’ve been investigating C & C 44 and there abouts. Seems like a great boat and reasonably priced. Would you change anything on it?

@@AlistairAVogan She has a balsa core. Balsa makes a good coring material but if owners decide to add a new through hull fitting they risk wetting the core. Balsa leeches water, so you have to be careful when looking at balsa cored boats for any aftermarket fittings and ensure they were properly isolated. (not something people typically started doing until the mid 90's). The other thing to watch with the 44 is that they were manufactured with either a fin keel (8' draft) or a retractable keel. Ours has a wing keel which was a special request by the first owner as she was fitted out for cruising, not racing (6.9' draft). Stay away from the 44R model. Also, the mast is VERY tall - can be a powerful boat. We ALWAYS sail with 1 reef in, and never more than a 110 jib and no spinnaker - Anything more and you'll need more crewmembers to handle the extra power. We average 8 knots on the 110 jib with 1 reef in the main.

It's kind of disingenuous to say "it beats rent!" if you don't include the purchase price of the boat. I can live in a million dollar beachfront condo for less than the cost of renting a 1 bedroom apartment if I don't tell you that I paid cash for the condo upfront and thus have no mortgage payment. Also I have no idea how you. eat a "foodie" diet for less than $3CAD/person/day, but I don't think you need to include the cost of groceries anyway, it's not specific to the boat, people will buy groceries if they live on a boat or in a house.
@Greatgreg100
@Greatgreg100 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, people have to buy groceries but due too the limited space on a boat you have to be more selective in your choice of food..... So you can be a Foodie and stay healthy at the same time.
