You don't buy a boat or get into sailing if your worried about saving $$. You do it because its what you enjoy and you cant put a price tag on your state of mind. You have a good way of communicating/presenting your experiences. Keep up the videos.

Very excellent video. You would think with 8g spent over 2 years there wouldn't be anything left to fix or update. This could explain why some boats sit idle on the hard or water for years yet even that gets expensive. People don't realize the need for repairs and expense on new or older boats. She's a beautiful boat and I think perfect for you two. Keep up the good work and thanks for the video.

Very good video. Its so important to go sailing as you fix a boat because when you do that the boat tells you what it needs. I think you should expect to spend at least $3000/year going forward. The annual haul out and bottom paint will probably run at least $1500/year.

Love this channel esp for the cost breakdowns. Native Floridian, always thought sail boats were for rich snobby types. Learning it need not be so. I’d like to get into this. Its a money hole I know but so are a motorcycles and I’ve happily spent a ton on those the last 20 years or so.

A lot easier to just tell us how much you paid for the boat--and if it's actually worth that price. You can then plan on 10% of the value every year on upkeep. Not counting marina fees and fuel and insurance. So every 10 years you pay for a replacement boat. The best thing to do is have your paycheck sent directly to WestMarine. They'll get it anyway. They can send you a little money for food once in awhile. Nothing too fancy, you under5stand.

You left out a couple of costs that will add up over time. First insurance. Second haulouts for bottom paint. Third periodic rebedding of deck fittings. You get the idea. My Allied 36 costs me about $12K/yr plus upgrades. For example I just bought a new genoa - $2K. Last year I bought a new dodger and a new chartplotter - $3K.

Just saw this. I think the money doesn't concern me so much as the time spent dealing with all these issues. I think my wife, who is not so much a sailor (yet anyways) would kill me if I spent every weekend fixing the boat. I guess I could spend more upfront to get something that needs less repairs, but I suspect that might only get me maybe one year grace period if that.

Where in Florida is a Marina fee so expensive?
@AdventuresInParadise
@AdventuresInParadise 2 жыл бұрын
Our local marinas are from Anclote down to Clearwater and St. Pete. Some are more than we pay, some less. A few you have to join the club. Residents get discounts. Half-off in some cases. We've been on a 2 year waiting list for a year now and went from 24th place down to 12th place. You can see slip rates on each marina websites usually. They're typically +/- $50 from what we're paying. All depends on the area. Our marinas are all next to excellent cities/restaurants with excellent boating nearby. it is very difficult to find any slip and we only got one because one of our fans helped us out.

Awesome! Life I can't afford so drool over a life that will never be on KZfaq 😋🤣. Eugh capitalism. Makes living off the grid so much more appealing but then you see it costs a lot to get living off the grid on the go. YOLO, and I think a lot of us aren't living exactly how we'd want to. I don't get life at all, can be quite senseless, chaotic and full of pain and suffering. Equally it can be full of beauty, if things transpire that way for you. Seems to me a lot of people get a raw deal in life, deserve better. People like me that have had a good deal but f***ed it up. And then the ridiculously privileged. Too bad it can't all be even-stevens for everyone.

If you can find a remote job, it's definitely possible if you live on the sailboat. You're saving money and time on tons of stuff. Lawncare, property tax, heating and air conditioning, etc. You're saving a boatload (😏😏😏😏😏) on those repairs. My parents just redid their roof and it was $70k. That said, if you've got a wife, kids, etc, living on a boat sometimes just isn't feasible. And when it becomes just a hobby, it's almost impossible to not spend a decent chunk of change every year. So living on a boat can be dirt cheap, and far far cheaper than living in a home. You can even avoid dock costs by simply anchoring somewhere. But having a boat just as a weekend hobby is incredibly expensive. Especially in places like Florida. In NJ I just found a place that's only $2/ft. So again, if it's a fully remote job, you can dock anywhere!

I bought four things in a year from West Marine and the other 23 items on this list elsewhere. Can I even have 65' of anchor chain mailed? The other items were $50 and $14... ... well, marina cost more than $5200, ... Keep It Simple, Stupid, ... that's why many people prefer smaller, easy trailable boats, maintenance at home, to move the boat three neighbors/friends and a case of beer are needed, above all things, if the tours only last about two weeks, no 3 tons vessel is needed, ... btw., marinas, ... bluewater sailers, where they go, no marinas are needed ...
@david78212
@david78212 2 жыл бұрын
You either love owning a sailboat or you don't. The biggest myth ever put onto the public are the words "maintenance free". Hate to clue you in, there is no such thing. If something were truly maintenance free, you would never have to replace, repair or paint it. I'm not really sure you can count marina fees either, unless you have a trailer and the ability to store it in your yard, you will have to pay marina fees...unless you can dock it at your house. I'm planning on buying a boat next spring, I wish it were in the cards to buy one right now. Is it my imagination, or are there a ton of boats for sale?
