Hello Friends! Today I am delighted to present to you Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy Exhibit from the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. The exhibit is currently running through September 5, but word on the street is that it will be extended before being packed up and sent back to China. This exhibit is not traveling at this time.
I was absolutely overwhelmed by this exhibit. every dress is a masterclass in creative and technical achievement. We saw this over the course of two days because myself as well as the people I was with were so mentally overloaded by what we saw that we missed about half of the exhibit entirely! I HIGHLY recommend you get yourself to this exhibit if possible. It's pretty here on video or in the book, but it's a whole different ballgame when you view it in person!
If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you are new here, please subscribe and leave me a comment down below to introduce yourself!

Hoops, corsets, bustles, hip pads, all that is old is made new. She’s using some very interesting materials and having them hold positions like the gold ship dress, doesn’t appear like it’s for “normal life/use” but the short blue velvet gown reminded me of Worth. And the blue and white gowns just before you came back with your thoughts were sweet. It was a beautiful exhibit

So, the design philosophy seems to be: 1. Lamp shades are the coolest. 2. Sparkles!!! 3. Let's make the pleater's life into a living hell scape. 4. Sitting and functioning ankles are for peasants.

I went to this exhibit with my mom last month. Not only is the Guo Pei exhibit amazing and crazy and fascinating, the Legion of Honor's regular exhibit halls are also pretty darned stunning. I have a whole new appreciation for medieval and early modern portraiture, and I even got a few ideas! The embroidery. Dear gods the embroidery. Levels of artistry that I can only asipre to. I would love to create garments with embroidery not like that because it's couture and thus a bit nuts but with that level of skill. An awful lot of the pieces had little dangly fringes or rows of beads or layers and layers of piled fabric that would swish as you walked. These were absolutely made to be worn and I wonder if we are getting the full experience since the objects are stationary. Just imagine them in motion! Thank you so much for sharing!

Overwhelm is real virtually too. Every time I thought that's my favourite a new one supplanted it. The strongest reaction for me was the blue and gold gown in the blue and gold room. The colours were perfect. It was as if a chair had started to move - a visceral emotion. I think I would happily spend a week there doing a little bit at a time - it would be a fantastic holiday. What stunning works of art. If the V&A are listening...... pleeeeeaaaase!

WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, and imagine I wrote WOW a hundred more times at least!! My favorites were the nature dresses, especially the birds nest dress. Then, I was very intrigued by the religious influenced dresses and how she used religious symbols in some of the long gowns as well. The dress that hooked two women together was such a surprise and done so well. I thought the beaded dresses were gorgeous, but I have worn dresses like those and my body literally hurt when I took them off. One of the dresses I wore, not by this designer, was so heavy, I felt like I was carrying a truck around all evening. All of my joints were screaming in pain by the end of the night. It was cold at the time, so I went into the bathroom, took it off and just wore a floor length coat home in the car. It took two days for the pain to go away. Won't be doing that again. This collection really demonstrated couture in my opinion. So much more than most of the designer shows of today. I haven't seen anyone else this creative, I don't think...ever. I was feeling overwhelmed by the end of the video. I can only imagine how it felt in person. It seemed each creation just seemed to wash over me like a big wave and I struggled to keep up. I think I will be rewatching this video several times and pausing on each dress/pants suit just to take them in and process each one the best I can. Thank you so much for sharing such an experience with us. You were so lucky to see this in person. Thanks again, Hugs

That was stunning! can't thank you enough for beinging this into my life. My top fhree favorites: 1) @10:27 the black column dress, looked like it was made of silk organdy with jet beading in the design of a cathedral. 2) @15:30 the gold sheath dress that looks like its made from some kind of mosaic tiles. Is that the mother of pearl you mentioned? and finally 3) @27:59 the blue and ivory off the shoulder, dropped waist, with high low skirt. I would totally wear that. What were your favorites?

Let me tell you this overwhelmed and amazed me too just to look at through a screen. But in a good ammount. I would probably exhaust myself too much if I were to go see something like this in real life. Mind blown repeteadely of how much intricate work have gone into this. I have too, walked through museums like a zombie because I couldn't take it in anymore, so I know how that feels. (My classmates thought I was weird for not appreciating all the things we saw. I just felt it had been too much in one day.)

Wow!! I'm speechless at the just the work that went into these pieces. I was just sitting and staring at my screen in awe. Obviously these pieces are not meant for everyday wear, they're more in the realm of fantasy as the name of the exhibit clearly shows. Plus the cost to create them has got to be staggering. I'd be really interested to see what her ready-to-wear lines look like. Oh, and I looked the museum's website and it says the exhibit is extended until November 27th.

I can see how that exhibit might wear one out. There is so much color, beauty, imagination and detail that it needs to be absorbed slowly. The only other exhibit that I have seen (sadly only on video) that impressed me as much was Iris van Herpen's collection. Hopefully the Couture Fantasy exhibit's stay is being extended as was mentioned. BTW excellent video work, with closeups, pans and chosen soundtrack.

I wonder if other businesses followed her business model wether there would be more artist/designers producing work like hers where it is all about creativity. Leaving commerce out of the creative process. To buy her work you have to pay for annual membership even before you can buy a dress. I think this is great as she always has the capital needed to create these artworks and is not focused on sales for capital. The genius is finding those clients initially when starting from nothing.

I'm sort of having the same reaction as I do to every high-fashion fashion show I've ever seen... admiring some of the work and all the little details but wondering who on earth would EVER wear something like that... why do you want to look like a lampshade or a three-tiered mushroom? I don't really get fashion, I guess. Same as fantasy armour, which I do make, but same thing as these, a lot of it is really lovely art, but not particularly wearable. Then again I know I'm too much the realist :) I must say though, some of these obviously still pieces do have a lot of motion to them, looking like you caught a photo in the middle of a twirl or something.

I think they are mostly for photographs and not actually wearing.
