When we brought our Coturnix Quail home we knew they were not destined for a life in a tiny rabbit hutch. In this video we will show you how we house our quail outdoors in an Aviary that is specifically designed for their needs. The design and functionality of this enclosure was developed through trial and error. Quail are not chickens so you need to adapt their outdoor enclosure a bit. I hope you can learn from what we've done and create a beautiful, functional outdoor quail enclosure too.

We have not seen any illness in our quail from keeping them on the ground. If anything I believe it makes them healthier and stronger. They scratch for insects, with provides healthy activity and protein. They dust bathe in the sand daily which helps them stay clean and bug free. They also have lots of room to run and chase each other. Having access to dirt allows them to mimic their natural behavior and live healthier happier lives.

This is just superb, I been tryin to find out about "quail breeding" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my co-worker got excellent success with it.

Perfect setting! And about wood chaps they create a gas nitrogen every time some liquid fall on it this is why you got respiratory problems I would use a sample hey on it. When you cut a grass just get it dry and collect it that will be more natural. Other than that awesome I will build something like that can't wait my pension coming and we gonna move to the house.

@@anatoliy8212 if you’re raising them though, as babies they need a heat lamp. Dried grass, straw, hay & things are a fire hazard. The pine shavings are safest in that setting.

Thank you for this video. As I was searching for a quail pen, there was nothing but inhumane rabbit cage like systems. Thank you for posting this.... being aware of where our food comes from comes with a responsibility to raise our animals who provide us with eggs and sometimes meat with kindness and compassion. I love the aviary!

There are several tips for constructing an aviary: Give yourself enough time. Use ready made boat outlines. (I learned about these and more on Aviary magic method site )

This is a great set up for the most part. Due to predators that most people have, hardware cloth would be much better option than chicken wire which raccoons will rip through no problem. Quail do have a lot of poop, so I could see this needing to be cleaned out pretty often. It is a nice set up for those who have the space and could afford to build it. Thank you for sharing!

In response to Gigi, we have no snake, rat or predator issues of any kind. The aviary is built with galvanized 22 gauge 1/2" hexagon wire so no snake or even mouse can enter. I buried rocks along the foundation 1' deep in a trench to deter digging predators. The roof is completely enclosed as well with the same wire so it's flight ready for the quail. the peak of the roof is 10' and they fly all the way up and hit it still. So a tall. enclosed structure is definately necessary.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm going to clear a large garden that's been left on its own too long, and I think I'll set up a large portion as a similar quail aviary. They can help keep insects in check and enjoy the freedom and sunshine; however, we'll still have a winter hutch in a protected shed, because in northern Wisconsin it gets well below zero and can snow ridiculous amounts (over 4 feet just in Feb. 2019). Your video and accompanying description was very helpful!

My bobwhite have 3 levels they walk up of large pieces of bark. The highest is 4'. I was surprised they they choose to sleep up high. Mine are in a big parrot cage indoors. They go on the lowest level to eat their gamebird ration & treats. They love their butter lettuce on the 2nd level & they use the top for looking out the house window & sleeping at night .

@@Chickmamapalletfarm Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. I just got my first 5 amd they're up high. I built the cage with 5 ft legs. It's temporary. I'll start gathering the material for an aviary style cage soon then move them into it. Someone is about to give me 20 or 30 of their layers so I have to get busy, lol. I also need to build a chicken tractor for a few hens and a rooster. So much to do. Are you going to try again at some point? Any other animals?

@@Peppersfirst oh wow! I love reading the enthusiasm in your words! What a smile you have brought to my face. 😊 I may try quail again at some point. If I did I would want to build a real Aviary as you mentioned as well. I would want to be able to sit with them and watch them. Maybe one day. I do have chickens (only 7), and I am seriously considering rabbits. 🤷‍♀️. I also maintain a pretty decent sized young food forest garden. So I keep pretty busy. Best of luck to you with your quail, and chickens and all future homesteading adventures. 🙏❤️🙏

Thank you for your video. I am going to set one of these up this Spring. I am in Arkansas in growing zone 7B and I heard you say in the video that your quail are out in your aviary all year long and I wondered what zone you're in and what the typical, persistent cold temps are each winter. Thanks in advance for your answer and for sharing your video because it is helping me plan.

Hi there, great setup. I'm hoping to building a nest box like you have shown here on the outside of our aviary, for nesting/shelter as you described. What would you recommend for space per bird inside the box? We are planning to have anywhere from 10-20 quail at different times in a 32 sq foot aviary.

Nice setup! On my channel I have a video of my pen for my gamebirds/bantam chickens. I have bobwhites, and I keep them on the ground, also. There’s some disease or something they get supposedly, but I haven’t had a problem at all. I did notice when I first put my bobwhites outside I lost about 5 ( I had 25 )... I think it was just nature making sure weak genes don’t get passed along.

Very nice setup! Only question I have is they don't try eating the poisonous daylily leaves? Alot of dogs and cats go into renal failure after eating the leaves. "Both of the true lily plants, Lilium sp. and Hemerocallis sp., can produce severe toxicosis and acute kidney injury (AKI). In fact, all parts of the plant are toxic and there are documented cases where exposure to the pollen alone has caused AKI."

Don’t they fight? Mine are all separated into small groups 3-4 . They use to peck at each other. I let them on the grass in a large screen tent but again had to buy more tents cause they would fight. They enjoy pecking at the grass but they are very content when I put them back in the cage. After a quick sand bath they head to their hut for a nap.
