If I were planning on raising quail as pets this would be the video for me but, I'm going to raise quail for meat and eggs. There's a way to keep quail happy and comfortable in smaller cages, even the wire mesh cages. A little straw, some pine needles and a sandbox along with access to fresh water and food they'll be happy their entire life. You've definitely created a beautiful setup for your pets. Great job!👍

I like it. I also have a pet quail. I also think they would like a big tray of growing grass to walk on. They also like to hide in tall seedy grasses that they can walk amongst & jump up to get the seeds. Thank you for sharing & love how thoughtful you were for them. Nice build job & interesting for them with levels & different areas. Very happy quail indeed, lucky too! 😃👍

A nice video showing a set up for quail in limited space. I like the natural element, but for new quail owners in colder climates, be warned, quail don't get out of the rain, they will just stand in it and get cold, so I do feel that a cover outdoors is necessary on the 'outside' section. Also, if they have access to soil, they will need worming. I've shared this video on my fb page urban quail keeping. I hope you get lots of views.

See the issue is some people have certain needs and sometimes keeping quail is a great idea. I know someone who has a few quail as pets and has breeding quail. If you have ever once used an animal for anything it is the same as using them to eat and sustain yourself. You can keep them like this if you like them like pets, or you can keep them like livestock or both. It's all a natural occurrence, i fail to believe that if a wolf could raise animals to eat that it would hunt.

Great video! I love the cage they look so happy :) what is the minimum size for a quail cage?
@MrAviary
@MrAviary 7 жыл бұрын
Your quails need space to forage and avoid each other so it depends on how many quails you have. I would say 0.5 m2 is the absolute minimum for a pair. My winter home is a little more than that and they do good in there but after 3 months I am glad I can put them outside again. They are so much happier outside in the bigger cage.

Thank you! I live in a rental with a pretty good sized yard and have been wanting chickens or ducks but recently have been looking into quails. I feel like I'd be more able to manage a smaller bird 🤔 I've been looking into building a coop for quails and hated the idea of them being stuck in a small box all the time. I want them to feel like they are in nature but I want them protected from the weather and predators as I live in the country where we have raccoons and coyote.

Thank you for creating such an informative video. I just have one question, when it rains and the sane outside gets wet? Do you let it dry out naturally or replace it? I e read that you can't let quails get their feet wet, so I'm wondering how best to keep them outside if that's the case
@MrAviary

I let it dry naturally. Quails need dry space. It is not bad that their feet get wet it's a problem if they stay wet for a while it will become a problem. So always make sure they have dry space available

Officially they are King quails, which is the smallest species of true quail. they are often called chinese button quail which is indeed misleading because buttonquails (whic they are not) are an only very distantly related family of birds

Buttonquail or hemipodes are members of a small family of birds, Turnicidae, which resemble, but are unrelated to, the true quails of Phasianidae. As I said the name Chinese button quail is misleading. King quails is a species of Old World quail in the family Phasianidae.
