Today I’m going to talk about the difference in using stretched canvas (the kind you buy on a frame) and unstretched (which comes rolled up aka rolled canvas). I’ll go over how they differ when it comes to painting, shipping and selling.

Glad you use primed canvas. I am just starting to make my own canvases due to the expense of the large paintings I now do. I didn't even realize primed canvas by the yard was available and didn't know which to choose. It makes so much dense so I am placing my first order. BTW it's pronounced jeh- sow. Thanks Coty

Thanks for the video. When you pin the canvas to the wall do you use nails or a staple gun? I bought some unstretched canvas which arrived folded ... I ironed it, but didn’t get all the creases out. Then I primed it myself. I used a staple gun. I thought that I have to stretch it whilst putting it up and stapling it so it will be taut ... I thought it makes it safer for later stretching over a canvas. My question is do you Stretch it as you are pinning it up on your wall?

What about varnishing? Do we keep the painting mounted till its time to varnish? For oils that might be months right?

Suganya Venkateswaran So you can do a couple of things: hang the painting up on the wall from tacks or clips, or lay it on a flat surface and take picture from the top down. Either way you’ll probably have to crop the image before posting it.

I like doing it that way. It’s easy to ship large paintings and it can be more affordable for the buyer. And I just explicitly state on my listings that the painting comes unstretched and without stretcher bars.

Please advise what medium to use to avoid cracking. Gel etc.. and can you use a retarder to slow down the drying process?

It depends on the paint. I don’t use anything in gloss enamel. In acrylic, yes you can use retarder to slow, and pouring medium/flow extender to prevent cracking. Generally paint cracks if it’s thinned too much and the binders break apart. Don’t thin too much and you generally avoid this.

Do you mean when it curls? I tried to stretch it out as much as possible but sometimes it just happens. I think this is more of an issue with thinner canvas

So I'm trying to buy a really nice painting picture online for mother's day to mom and I dont know what to do it said MATTE PAPER /OR/ ROLLED CANVAS what do I do ? I don't know the difference and I don't know which one to choose she does have a really huge frame of the same artist hes name CARLD FREDERIC AAGAARD and I know she would love another big frame from him 🤷‍♀️ can u help I just need to know what to pick ?

So paper can be put into a frame like a normal picture. Rolled canvas usually needs to be stretched over a wooden frame or stretcher bars. You can put rolled canvas into a picture/poster frame, but that’s not common. So if you’re looking to put it into a picture frame, then the paper

I want to stretch my 40x50cm painting onto a canvas, what size canvas do I require would it be the same size as the painting?

You need about 3 in (or 6-8 cm) of space on each side to wrap around the frame. So the frame would smaller than the painting by that much on each side.

This video was super helpful! I am just getting into painting for commissions and I am seriously struggling with stretched vs outstretched. I learned a lot from your video and the only question I do have is how does the integrity of the painting stand up once its rolled, maybe that's a rookie question but does the paint not flake/weaken from being rolled?

I actually just shipped a rolled painting for the first time. You can store them rolled but what I suggest is putting glassine paper over it before you roll it so it gives it some separation, but also making sure it’s not rolled too tight so that it crushes the piece. Lastly DO NOT roll it until it is 100% dry or it will cause cracking or smearing. I hang it up to dry for a few days (up to a week) before rolling. But gloss enamel dries fast and it’s much easier (and cheaper) to ship rolled.

Teijah Normally no. The paint I use is already protective and high gloss but some times depending on the piece I will

You roll yours loose with painted size on the exterior, no? If not, consider doing so. Otherwise you risk paint cracking, chipping and generally separating from the canvas. Example. A painting really shouldn't be rolled any tighter that it can be whilst leaving approx. 3 to several more inches ID.

It’s a protective, acid free paper that is good for storing artwork in. It’s better than butcher paper, wax paper, or parchment paper

I pretty much only use Amazon or Blick. I've never really used outside sites, simply because when I order online, I tend to get a bunch of things at once. But it depends on the size I want. Generally Amazon has the best selection.

Actually, the reason you can see the center is because I scraped out all the painting from the center, lol. Definitely looks like a phoenix.

I liked you painting, not my style but it is nice, But your presentation , your face all the time and the lack of a stabilized video, made this so hard to watch. I am sorry, I could just say “it’s awesome “ . But you can do Better I only learned the the stretched canvas is hard on the edges, Everything else was obvious.
