Ever since Steve Morse has left the band people started talking badly about him. It's really strange. Apart from the fact that he saved the band all those years ago he really lifted them up to new hights. They sounded amazing with him, especially with Jon Lord still on board. Perihelion and Abandon Live are among my favorite Purple concerts. In his last years with the band though, I felt that he was losing his spark. It was the right decision to leave, even though he (at least officially) left because of the severe illness of his wife who sadly passed away not too long ago.

@sabbaseleftheriadis5601

No, he never "saved" Deep Purple, lol. Steve Morse is responsible for making Deep Purple sounding dull and boring, and he never had any spark like what Ritchie and seemingly Simon has. Listening to these three Deep Purple songs, you can realise the spark that Morse never really had, at least for Deep Purple. Deep Purple are one of the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal, not just a good rock band where any random could fit. It only took 3 songs for the most of us to understand that, but I realised the drop in quality since 2000. Steve Morse may be a good guitarist, but he was never what Deep Purple needed. Simon and Don Airey are what exactly Deep Purple needed. Nobody is speaking about any album of Steven Morse era, they're all mostly forgettable. Not exactly bad, but not memorable either. Simon and Don are going to change that.

I think you're so right about sounding like the Mark 2. One of them, I believe it's the "Portable door" one, sounds a bit like "Pictures of home" from Machine Head. Yes, they seem, at this point in their lives (the OGs, the 2 Ians, Roger, even Don) to want to get back to their roots as a final tribute to the fantastic purple sound they had a little after they first started ...

Deep Purple is well known for being one of the founding groups of hard rock. Their music had a significant influence on the development of genres such as heavy metal. Their 1972 album “Machine Head,” which included the hit “Smoke on the Water,” is often cited as a major influence in the rock world. Despite several line-up changes, Deep Purple continues to tour and produce music to this day. They left an indelible mark on the history of rock music.

I agree with your points. I haven't heard all three new songs yet, but the two I've heard - Lazy Sod and Portable Door are good songs. Yes, as a big Mark II fan I miss Blackmore and Lord, but Airey and McBride hold up their end on the songs. I was also impressed with how good Ian Gillan's voice sounds. Just texted some friends to listen to these first three singles and told them I may have to purchase =1. If these three are any clue, we have some classic Purple here. Glover and Paice are as amazing as ever, Don Airey sounds fantastic on the Hammond, Simon McBride has a very Ritchie-esque sound, and Gillan…just wow.

Everything that Steve Morse recorded with Deep Purple starting with the Perpendicular album up until he left the band due to his wife's illness is just amazing. I first got into Deep Purple in 1974 and preferred them to Led Zep who had a heavier, at times ponderous, sound. Now I like them equally as they both have a different approach to songwriting. Simon McBride is from Northern Ireland like me so, out of curiosity, I gave "Portable Door" a listen. I liked it and the subsequent single release from the forthcoming new album but the third release, "Lazy Sod", is the best yet. I love both the guitar and keyboard solos and Ian's lyrics are as cheeky as ever. Three good songs in a row is all the convincing I need and I have pre-ordered the album with additional live tour DVD. The new sound is reminiscent of their Mark II incarnation but it also has a fresh spin. I felt that also with the new Rolling Stones album "Hackney Diamonds" which is the band's best in years. Producers may have something to do with it. Bob Ezrin's work with the great Alice Cooper was excellent. Well, we'll see if the album has other standout tracks later this month but I for one am hopeful that the band have hit a rich vein and excited by where they go from here. A good video as always, Michael.

All three songs are very good. They remind me of the very early sound of Mk2 (In Rock). Almost to the point where I begin to wonder if there was any artificial “enhancement” going on. I don’t mean that to sound critical, but can’t help but wonder. The interplay between the members is phenomenal. Sounds very much like a real band. I like the Morse era, but McBride seems like a better fit. He should because he was in Don Airey’s solo band. Either way, glad to see that these old sods are making great music.

Greetings from Newfoundland. I just joined the Tribe ! The lack of interplay between Don and Simon and the 4 minute songs is certainly different and noticeable for Deep Purple. The guitar/organ duels were once a cornerstone of their sound. On his past work with the guys, Bob Ezrin was all about encouraging the band to stretch out. As far as the singles,1- Portable Door 2- Lazy Sod 3- Pictures of You . All the songs are easily digestable,but I doubt I'll be humming them from memory in 6 months from now.

First of all, I loved the Mark II era. I also accept that Steve Morse is a brilliant guitarist. But I never liked his sound, the sound of his guitar. There were certainly some outstanding songs with him, but somehow something was always missing to fulfill the magic of Deep Purple. I have to say that I was and always will be a fan of Ritchie Blackmore. Now Simon McBride. For the first time since Ritchie left, I have the Deep Purple feeling again. The songs I know so far are excellent. The guitar sound feels right. I am so excited about the full album. And I hope that Deep Purple will be around for a long time to come.

Another good album coming. Can't find one track i don't like. Simon has a bit of Ritchie and Steve's playing style in these 3 tracks, so he'll be a perfect fit. Bring it on

Don Airey has been around a long time, played with Ozzy, Gary Moore and Rainbow, amongst others. Great keyboard player.

The same goes for me with Steve Morse. Don has always been a big influence for me. Simon fits in very well.

These 3 songs are great! I liked 3:09 them all on first listen. Now you have to be sceptical these days with pro tools and auto tune, but Gillans voice is cool, he has a kind of slur going which I love.

I think it will be near impossible to surpass the masterpiece that is Purpendicular and to a lesser extent Now What!? Yes folks musically superior to Machine Head and In Rock. Well we are all entitled to our opinions.

I'm with you! Cannot believe how underrated Purpendicular is! An absolute classic. And Now What? the best Morse era album since Purp.

I'm going through the same thing as you. MK.II is where it's at for me (not to knock any of the other iterations of the band, just personal preference) , and kinda lost track/interest when it comes to their latter day work. Latest track (Lazy Sod) did pop up in my spotify 'new music' suggestions though. It did have that MK.II flavour/vibe (and a bit Mk.II of swagger/attitude if you will) to it that struck the right chord so to speak. Not trying to pick it apart too much though, just gonna enjoy it for what it is.

Just subscribed! I reckon the new album is gonna be fantastic! Simon is ok but I liked Stevy after Ritchie. (Abandon is a masterpiece for me-I play the guitar too) Lazy Sod-is pretty good , the rest of the two songs are at approximately the same level (IMO). Best regards from Moscow, Russia, Cheers!
