One of the greatest and often overlooked R&B groups in history. Their greatest hits include: "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love", "Rubberband Man", "Ghetto Child", "Games People Play", "Sadie", "It's A Shame", "One Of A Kind (Love Affair), "How Could I Let You Get Away" and a great duet with Dionne Warwick, "Then Came You".

Produced by Thom Bell, one of the greatest R and B producers ever. He is known for his lush string and horn arrangements, use of a French horn, and a beat you can't resist. He and his writing partner, Linda Creed, wrote songs for many R&B performers, and he produced for so many I can't even name them all. .He even produced an album for Elton John which is very good! It's more like an EP. Their lead singer,Phillipe Wynn had the most incredible voice and a knack for improvising lyrics

The Spinners had been with Motown for years without success before signing with Atlantic in '71. It was Thom Bell's songwriting and production that turned around their career. (Although he did not write "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love") Thom Bell was one of the creators of the "Philadelphia Sound" in the 1970's. In addition to the Spinners, he is known for as a producer and songwriter for the Delphonics and the Stylisitics.

Most of us old rockers used to love a few R&B groups. One of mine, and my favorite, were The Spinners. And saw them in concert at a State Fair one time in the 80's. My favorites of theirs was this one, Love Don't Love Nobody and Mighty Love. And How Could I Let You Get Away. They had a fantastic Live album also.

I am an "old rocker" who loved guitar driven bluesy bands like Derek & The Dominos, Allman Bros, etc, and also loved Motown R&B.
@gregsager2062
@gregsager2062 9 ай бұрын
@@lynnhardigree2806 The Spinners weren't really Motown, though. I mean, they were on Motown for years and years, but they only had one minor hit there ("It's a Shame"), mostly because Berry Gordy and his associates who ran the label felt that the Spinners would never amount to anything more than the B-team that's there at the bottom of the bill on the package tours. It wasn't until the Spinners signed with Atlantic in 1972 and were able to gain the services of Philadelphia soul genius songwriter/producer Thom Bell that they had their breakout success. The songs everyone remembers from the Spinners such as "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", "I'll Be Around", "The Rubberband Man", "Then Came You" (with Dionne Warwick), "Games People Play", "One of a Kind (Love Affair)", and the two hit medleys "Working My Way Back to You"/"Forgive Me, Girl" and "Cupid"/"I've Loved You for a Long Time" weren't Motown. They were Philly soul. Different city, different sound, different decade. Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, with house band MFSB, was one of the biggest hitmaking studios in the history of popular music -- and the vast majority of the hits made there were soul tunes recorded in the 1970s.

Some of the best songs that came out of the 60's and 70's included a string and a brass section arrangement, making those great compositions sound even better. You hear that a lot in songs, even some of the rock tunes had that. This song by The Spinners is always a joy to listen to, as I had back in the 70's.

You need to do the Stylistics - "You are Everything", "Betcha by Golly Wow", "Break up to Make Up", "I'm Stone in Love with You"

There were two different singers. The Spinners were just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2023.

Another classic soul song from the early 70’s Andy & Alex should check out is “Have You Seen Her” by The Chi-Lites. Phenomenal vocal harmonies…

I think "It's a Shame" would rate highest for you guys-- got some grit, some serious range, and a Stevie Wonder-ish vibe to it.
