Could MLB Consider Contraction for the Oakland A’s?

About the Oakland A's Flip Tax: www.usatoday.c...
For more sports and random stuff, visit The Touchback: thetouchback.com
The Athletics are hurdling toward contraction, a dirty word not uttered in baseball circles since ill-fated attempts to remove the Minnesota Twins and Montreal Expos from Major League Baseball. The roster has already been stripped for parts and sold, any usable infrastructure is being gutted and outsourced to the Sacramento Kings and River Cats staff. The team is basically one of those car frames on blocks you see driving through Rio Linda on any given day.
Everyone is lining up to potentially buy the Oakland A’s as the team’s Las Vegas stadium plans feel less and less realistic by the day. Joe Lacob, Vivek Ranadive and mystery buyers. And while probably everyone on the baseball hierarchy from the commissioner’s office to the owners, players and even fans want him to sell, there is a catch. The Flip Tax.
Contracting the A’s gives Fisher the money wants while providing MLB with a third expansion team. For Fisher, the benefit here is clear. He gets an above market rate for his franchise without needing to pay the Flip Tax or spending money on a new stadium. If Manfred and the other owners offered him $1.5 billion, he’d probably take it.
For MLB, they can scrap the A’s and then turn around and sell someone an expansion team for $2 billion. They end up making more than they would have with the relocation or Flip Tax. We also know that those running baseball could care less about history. Hell, Manfred would probably take delight in being the one who kills off the A’s brand.
We know there are three groups out there and probably more willing to pay $2 billion for an expansion team. In this scenario, MLB and Fisher get the money they want and a way out of a huge problem they contrived to create in the first place.
Contracting the A’s franchise would be such a terrible thing to do for a sport steeped in history and tradition. Then again, those running baseball have proven time and again to hate that history and tradition.

Contraction isn't happening because the Players Association isn't going to allow it. They'd rather keep the A's roster with minor league level players than see the team contract. The surprising thing is that the Players Association has been very silent about the A's move to Sacramento. It's not like they've been silent. They recently complained about the uniforms and the large amount of pitching injuries. They are not going to allow contraction, so this is just wishful thinking. As long as the MLBPA is still the most powerful union in sports, they are not going to allow anything that loses players jobs, which includes contraction. For them contraction is "over our dead body." Your idea of an expansion team to play immediately to take their place might be the only solution that would convince the Players Association to accept the A's contraction but I don't know if they would even accept that.
@thetouchback
@thetouchback 4 ай бұрын
You missed the point. MLB will still have 30 teams. They are just swapping out the A's for an expansion team and then adding two more later on. And the MLBPA is about as powerful as a high school student government at this point.

@@thetouchback That would make sense, especially if they can get John Fisher out of baseball. Honestly, though, there probably should be another franchise that should be contracted, and after that, I don't really think that expansion is a good idea. It is just a cash grab. For example, I have heard rumors about how the NHL may want to expand to 40 eventually, which would be crazy.

Appreciate your perspective & idea about contraction. Was just comparing Goodell & Manfred. It seems as if NFL is growing by leaps & bounds. Working towards smaller nfl stadiums b/c most revenue comes from eyeballs on tv, not ticket sales. Peacock & Amazon are in a bidding war over NFL games to broadcast. $100's of millions comes from tv. Baseball is losing tv. It's all about the benjamins & baseball is losing. When A's move on from Oakland a whole bunch of people (& money) are moving on from baseball. unfortunate. Baseball used to be a great pastime. It would be something if baseball team owners were forced to use revenue sharing & tv money for team salaries or stadium maintenance instead of pocketing it. Unfortunately this isn't an option for the other team John Fisher owns the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS. Ever since John Fisher brought back the Quakes in 2008 (after the original Earthquakes bolted to Houston in 2005 & became the Dynamo) they have been one of the worst teams both on & off the field in MLS mainly because John Fisher refuses to spend money to improve the team. This despite having one of the best soccer specific stadiums in the country in PayPal Park & a rich history in both the old NASL & the early years of MLS. Even if contraction was an option, MLS would not do it to the Quakes mainly because they would basically give up one of largest metro areas in the country & allow the rival USL (via the Oakland Roots) to be the dominant soccer league in the Bay Area. The other option of promotion/relegation won't happen any time soon due to MLS's total unwillingness to work with USL or other soccer leagues in the US (just look at the stunt MLS pulled a few months ago with US Open Cup as proof of that). MLS also won't facilitate any kind of sale of the Quakes to new owners because they view John Fisher as an important piece of maintaining a presence in the Bay Area even though Fisher is a roadblock in preventing MLS from expanding to Sacramento due to his unwarranted fears that a Sacramento club would encroach too much on his Northern California territory when it comes to fan support.

The problem with contraction by deactivating the A's is you would have to deactivated a national league team like the Marlins reducing MLB to 28 which would create a downsizing frenzy for profit by deactivating the 2 of the lowest performing least profitable teams every creating a situation in which we ask which team will be deactivated next leading to the incredibly shrinking national past time. And with all the potential job loses that would almost demand government attention and oversite of the sport. Bottom line IMO expansion is definitely not happening. Great Video👍

Contraction would never happen. Way too much money involved to subtract an entire franchise. Plus, Manfred is a joke. He can't decide what he wants for dinner, much less make a meaningful baseball decision. MLB would add 2 teams before they get rid of 1

Unfortunately he forgot to mention that the Player's Union would shoot down the deal. Also selling the team to a Sacramento, Vegas or Utah based group wouldn't be a bad move could just sell the the trademarks, and baseball assets.

@@DANGMQMLBPA isn't going to stop it since the union hates playing in Oakland due to how bad the Coliseum is. NBA didn't stop the Warriors going to San Francisco, NFL didn't stop the Raiders going to Vegas, so what makes you think the city of Oakland or MLB is going to stop the A's from Vegas?

There's two problems with that idea. The CBA forbids contraction, and there would be an unbalanced schedule.

Coyotes it sounds like the NHLPA may had a helping hand in them getting a new owner who is willing to over pay in Ryan Smith. When the sale of the Coyotes is done maybe will hear more stories of how the Coyotes ownership group seems to be burning Bridges with Arizona i think that also played a hand to them not paying their bills . i think the same thing is going to happen with the A's iwill be shocked if if the shovels ever make it to Vegas dirt . and where that leaves the team . MLB wants that expansion money but the Rays & A's need new stadiums some where first before they can expand that's why i think the A's got so called fast tracked to Vegas but like everyone else i see a problem getting that new stadium

tbh Im not sure why they couldn't also consider contraction for the Marlins, Rays and maybe one other team that gets no support from the local fanbase like maybe the Angels or White Sox? Give Baseball a large reset.

The players association wants more teams, not fewer teams. Oakland had plenty of time to build a new stadium or upgrade the old stadium. Oakland did neither. Good landlords make improvements to the property to get a tenant to sign a new lease when the lease expires. Oakland didn't. Now Oakland owns a stadium without a tenant... Unfortunately this shit show is the result of far left wing politicians with NO concept for business, or real estate... DEMONIZING Fisher whether he earned it isn't winning brownie points with the MLB. The city does not own the team, MLB does not own the team, the only person who chooses to sell the team when that person wants to is Fisher. While the city thought they were holding a inside straight, Fisher been holding a royal flush... The A's will build MLB clubhouses in Sacramento which should please the players association... Players sign contracts with teams, not with cities...

This video is just food for the fisher haters. For all I know the A’s are profitable, one of the most storied franchises in baseball( the city has held them let’s be honest Oakland is dying), they are moving to a bigger market. The topic of this video lowkey pisses me off cause it’s never gonna happen unless fisher loses all his money 😂😂😂.
