Following the announcement by the CIS in September 1991 that it could no longer fund development of the Yak-41M, Yakovlev entered into discussions with several foreign partners who could help fund the program. Lockheed Corporation, which was in the process of developing the X-35 for the US Joint Strike Fighter program, stepped forward, and with their assistance aircraft 48-2 was displayed at the Farnborough Airshow in September 1992. Yakovlev announced that they had reached an agreement with Lockheed for funds of $385 to $400 million for three new prototypes and an additional static test aircraft to test improvements in design and avionics. Planned modifications for the proposed Yak-41M included an increase in STOL weight to 21,500 kg (47,400 lb). One of the prototypes would have been a dual-control trainer. Though no longer flyable, both 48-2 and 48-3 were exhibited at the 1993 Moscow airshow. The partnership began in late 1991, though it was not publicly revealed by Yakovlev until 6 September 1992, and was not revealed by Lockheed until June 1994.

I've heard people make a big deal out of the F-35 operating from strips, roads, etc. but to my knowledge the new coating is much more durable than previous gens. Is it feasible in your experience for the A variant to use unprepared surfaces like the Gripen?

Just want to point out a technical note: the F35B can take off vertically but it is severely weight restricted, the fuel load needs to be around 3000 lbs with no stores. Fully fueled it can STO in less than 500ft. Full fuel and stores is around 900ft

You should use CCIP R instead of CCIP by pressing the most right button on the UFC, this will increase your precision by a lot.

Awesome video. Given you guys have done FOBs with the F-35, do you think you could possibly do a Cold War Harrier FOB scenario? There was a bit of consideration at least that the Harriers could operate from forest bases if the Cold War went hot and the runways were out of action. Similar to how the Swedish Airforce would use main roads in such an event.

well but it can still take off horzoly on very short run ways. very short runways was that most fobs would have anyway. so thats not the problem. plus once it uses up its ordcasce it would land vercaly anyway. also the F-35 DCS mod still don't have those F-35 internal weponbays still. so when is the dcs f-35 mod maker giong to add the F-35 internal weapons bays?

actly thats only juts 3/4 of the paylaod capitsy so tecly its still light enotgh to take off vercaly with only 4 2,000lb bombs but that at its max vertcal takeoff paylaod wight capsity! let me remind its max vectal takoff pay laod wight is like 8,000lb or less but the max take off with horzontal short runway takeoff mode is like 15,000lbs at max so no it still can take off vectaly in this case! but this f-35 dcs mod has not poperly impmented the F-35Bs inrteal wepons bay that is like aronud 5000lbs internal with the 8000lb max paylaod size for the four external hardpoint of the F-35B. but this DCS F-35 mod only has the F-35B 8000lb external hardponits only. but anyway the fact is the F-35B has four extrnal bays by the way! the F-35 A and C got six of them with a max external pay laod of 15,000lbs. but the F-35B extranl max playlaod is only 8,000lb! it says it on its wiki page artcal.

"F35s would never be able to take off vertically with that much ordnance." Indeed. We can easily test that idea. The F-35B operational empty weight is 32,300 lbs. Max hover thrust is 40,550 lbs. With 4x2000 lbs of weapons + 700 lbs in pylons you are already over the hover limit - and we still have no fuel. A (slightly) more realistic loadout could be say eight 250 lb SDBs internally at about 2500 lbs including adapters. Then you'd still have room for about 5000 lbs of fuel which would give you maybe half an hour of endurance. But the F-35B would realistically not be able to operate in VTOL from dirt strips like this due to the huge blast from the engine and lift fan. Which would engulf the aircraft in dangerous dirt and dust and most likely destroy the ground beneath it. It would need an aluminum landing pad, which the USMC has successfully tested.

No sadly, not part of the current fleet, and would only be latest package rollouts if paid for in the allocation plans for the next batch of 42 aircraft. Retrofitting would take even more time and money for the fleet. Sidekicks expected to be prioritized for As and Cs. B's do not have the internal space to carry as much room, so they are not on the sidekick list. The marine corps B's will be neutered for a long time as a result and their utility will be post day-1 fights against near peer airspaces.

That Super Tuco is the funnest plane I have flown yet. A monkey can fly it. I started it all up and figured out most of the systems with NO tutorials. It is that good of a bird. I have no idea why the USAF didn't buy more. I can't wait until all systems come online. That way they can focus on the FM and the external model.

Here's another interesting experiment you could do with F-35s: Could a group of, say, eight F-35s sent back in time to WWII have accomplished the B-17 and B-24's intended role and take out industrial targets via daytime (albeit usually cloudy) precision bombing with impunity, while also minimizing collateral damage? How much can they carry while flying too high for flak and enemy fighters to hit them, and how many imprecise WWII bombs would each of their bombs be worth?

well actaly theres a diffrent fonuion of the shrt takeoff mode that would make it take off horzontaly on a full paylaod that massvly shortes how meuch runway would be needed. like it can take off on very very short runways even ecaxtly the ones we use with fobs won't be a problem for them.

sorry that cockpit is not going to be impmleted un less your play dcs with a VR head set or headtracking flight sim perferal! this is bescue the F-35 cockpit kinda is not to be albe to be realy simlated properly wihout a vr head set or head tracking flgiht sim preferal to full implent the F-35 agmented realty cockpit or wihout any head traeking hardware to implent the f-35 agmented realty helment display. and see threw cockpit that alows you be able to see past in those f-35 cockpit blind spots anyway via camreas in the F-35 air frames.

Other than cool factor, is there any reason you wouldn't just bomb truck a few STucs over dragging in some F-35s? Speed, I guess, but you're limited by the speed of the spotting planes. Not questioning the tactics, just curious is all.

On a guess, because where the video was taken was the local machine of that player. The networked F-35s might not have shown it.
