Well Cap addressed my concern of no area jamming and I seriously thought Growlers were available on DCS but guess not. Area jamming needs to be included ASAP for realistic strikes, especially from NATO aligned countries that dont attack without it.

Not to sure about it really, it creates extra workload for the PC, opens a whole can of worms in terms of jamming, most of which is classified and so it's never going to be "realistic" anyway and overall the fun in flying DCS is in flying and manovering. Twiddling knobs and buttons to cast complicated magic spells on radars just doesn't sound that fun....

I'm sure he's good enough to make it work. 20:24: Ah, yes, the 9Z9999A Zemlya. It'll only work in straight and level, unaccelerated flight. 32:49: WWI engines were lubricated with castor oil. The engines sprayed it all over the place. The pilots were in open cockpits. And castor oil is used as a laxative. Put two and two together. Re. two questions raised by Cap in the vid: @13:30 Re. the "curving" of radar waves vs. light in the atmosphere. This is due to the variation of the index of refraction of water vapor in the atmosphere as a function of altitude. This refractivity effect of water vapor is negligible at optical frequencies (ie. visible light), but is observable at the relatively lower frequencies used by radars. At these frequencies the decrease in the index of refraction of water vapor with altitude results in an increase in the effective speed of propagation of the radar wave, thus a wavefront will travel faster at higher altitudes, and will travel slower at lower altitudes. The net effect is the wavefront "bends" downwards, hence the radar wave "curves" downward. (Refer to Merrill Skolnik "Introduction to Radar Systems", chapter 12 "Propagation of Radar Waves", section 12.4 "Refraction") @19:30 Re. human body RCS. There are several studies that the entire human body has an RCS between around 1 sqm to 0.001 sqm depending on frequency. For example at 1 GHz (i.e. L-band, or around the frequency of the S400 CheeseBoard search radar) the human body has an approximate RCS of 0.01 sqm. While at frequencies between 2-3 GHz and between 4-5 GHz the RCS is on the order of around 1 sqm. At around 9-10 GHz (i.e. getting close to the frequency of the S400 GraveStone track radar) the RCS drops back down to around 0.01 sqm. Of course, a human head sticking out of a cockpit would have an even smaller RCS than the whole body.

TALDs could be effective, even given the 60km range, because they don't have to make it all the way to the target. If they are launched at 105km out, that's 55km where they can suck in interceptors. Launching a TALDs wave prior to the main strike should burn some missiles and make launch sites unmask.

Love this. I think someone should shoddymod a Horten Ho-229. They were all wood except for the engines. Model the control-surface pulley ropes as sinew and I think you might just sneak within MinMissileDist. If the air-inlets were redesigned to be those soggyrhombuses like on the F35 and Su57 and lined the inlet with carbon paper of some other period-correct RAM material, the 229 might give it a go. Ooh, I know: Stealthy bombs aren't stealthy if they are hanging off the wings. To use the existing airframe and still have a stealthy performance as a bomber, fill the landing gear/tires with tannerite and put little plunger switches on the landing gear frame so they won't arm prematurely. Herr Air Marshall doesn't mind if his pilots land on a skid, ala the Komet 163... just slap some palate wood under there and land the first batwing toboggan. Come on. Give a Ho a chance!!

SA 400 over performs in DCS, you could say that about the stealth aircraft. I don't think you can gauge it's effectiveness in Ukraine, as Ukraine does not fly that many sorties and we do not know how many SA 400 are deployed or were to. I note a growing trend were NATO overestimates Russian weapons to get more money and then downplays them through the media. You have to be careful analysing anything coming out of Ukraine. I saw an article in a UK tabloid claiming a stinger shot down an su34 during a low level pass but the Ukrainian troops had Verba manpads and said they used a verba. No doubt the stingers are effective but to draw conclusions you need all the facts.

The explanation for the curving or radar over the horizon is due to a phenomenon known as refraction (waves bending around the edge of a solid barrier). Radar waves from an emitter of lower frequency (and longer wavelength, wavelength = wave speed / frequency) curves or refracts better at the edge than those of a shorter wavelength, and so longer wavelength radars (such as search radars) can refract better around the curvature of the earth than the shorter wavelength of tracking radars. Tracking radars tend to use shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies, because the shorter the wavelength of the radar, the more accurately you can localise the return signal's position in space. However, a longer wavelength radar tends to be less susceptible to scattering and attenuation from stealth technology. A search radar return might tell the operator that something is out there, but without the returns from a tracking radar, it might not know exactly where it is. There are limitations to what can be done, as the physical dimensions of the radar system (particularly antennae and waveguides) need to be of a scale similar to the wavelength (more accurately half of the wavelength - a waveguide can only support half-wavelengths at or less than it's longer cross-sectional dimension. Above this, the propagation of the wave is strongly attenuated or absorbed. This is called the waveguide cut off), so shorter wavelength, lower frequency radars need dimensionally larger components, which lead to designs such as the giant "Woodpecker" antenna that one of the other commenters mentioned for the old Soviet early warning radar.

How many S-400 battalions are in this scenario? In a typical conventional conflict with Russia, the average S-400 system would be comprised of at least 8-10 launchers, where each system at most contains 2 (commonly just one) battalions. Unless you’re attack Moscow and they’ve consolidated all their anti-air assets, you’d be hard pressed to find more than 3 battalions co-located in the same AO

A scenario commonly presented to active Air Force and army is in a defensive posture: 2 S-300 (or s-400) battalions, 1 pantsir battalion, 4-6 aircraft, stacked between 15k and 35k feet, one A-100 (or A-50; Russia will be replacing their A-50 entirely) 1-2 armored companies, and 1 infantry battalion (or at least 2 infantry companies) co-located. That for all intended purposes, this would be an average system we’d face near the border and/or likely avenues of approach. With each system there is also a signal battalion, connecting each s-400 battalion to one another; in an attempt to have one fluid system (4 battalions can be managed by 1 signal battalion) So your 6 battalions, instead of being co-located within 100m, is now spread across 600km (probably more like 200-450km).

The longer wavelength of radar (microwaves) allows it to follow the curvature of the earth whereas the shorter wavelengths of visible light don’t curve so much. Radio waves are even longer and they curve even more; they will even follow rivers. The radio beacon detectors in aircraft can give a false heading if near rivers.

The way to beat an advanced IADS Network is force it to expend all the ordinance on cheap expendable targets... like high-time F-16s that are ready to be scrapped out anyway. F-16s fly-by-wire system makes them the easiest old fighter jet to convert to an expendable drone. With a dummy pilot in the cockpit, they'd be indistinguishable from real strike aircraft even at close range.

This is because of physics - stealth shaping on fighter-sized targets is useless against VHF frequencies and the F-35 can't carry the weight of enough radar absorbent materials (unless they invented some physics bending, super lightweight coating - in which case they'd coat every asset they have with it). That said, an F-35 can still destroy the S-400 with a GBU-39, launched from 40 miles at 36 kft (provided the Pantsirs don't shoot the munition down)... but the F-35 gets shot down by the S-400 before it can escape ('cause it's slow). Unlike the F-22, which can actually escape.

I'm not sure how well it is modelled in DCS but when it comes to the radars of the S-400 they are not particularly well adapted to detecting a stealth target especially a small stealth target the Big Bird is NATO F band (IEEE S Band) The Cheese Board is NATO E Band (IEEE S band still) and the Grave Stone is NATO G/I band (IEEE C amd X band) for its search and illumination modes respectively. The end result is all three radars operate at the frequencies The F-35 is best optimized to be stealthily against. Both the F-22 and F-35 are optimzed for the 2-60GHz range through their RAM and physical shape. Once the radar wavelength becomes larger than the shapes can redirect however you are stuck with just the RAM and it too is less efficient at absorbing a longer wavelength. The B-2 meanwhile due to being significantly larger is much more stealthy in the face of long wavelength radars. By most accounts the B-2 is more stealthy on A band radar than an F-35 is on F Band radar. RCS does not mean everything. At closer ranges this becomes largely irrelevant so yeah the S-400 absolutely should have seen you at maybe ~25nmi To detect small stealthy targets (small being fighter airframe not rcs) you want a low band radar something A-C band. That's why the Tall rack system has an A band (VHF) antenna. Some solid candidate systems if this behavior is modelled correctly Rezonans-N 59N6 Protivnik-GE P-19 Ideally the modernized Kasta 2E2 version 5N69 Big Back (actually a D band so not as good but is a monster transmitter so it has a fair shot) 1L13-3 Nebo SV... All Nebo variants are usable but this one is the least likely as it is 80s vintage 22Zh6 Tin Trap 55Zh6M Tall Rack VHF antenna 55Zh6M Tall Rack L Band D Band (IEEE L Band) Antenna 55ZH6-1 Nebo UYe Oh and a human will show up on radar. Since we are mostly water we, as well as all living things, are nearly as reflective to radar as metal

I'm actually confused as to how DCS calculates detection range for low-rcs tagets. If we just look at in-game behavior, how exactly are DCS calculations based on rcs parameters set by the player: The Cheese Board search radar is supposed to be able to detect a 1 sqm rcs target at around 165 nm (open source info), and in this scenario Cap set the F35 rcs to 0.005 sqm, so the F35 should have been detected at around 44 nm (assuming DCS uses the standard fourth-root relationship of rcs to detection range). Even the Grave Stone track radar (open source info: 1 sqm rcs target at 130 nm) would be able detect the 0.005 sqm rcs F35 at 35 nm. But as this vid showed the F35 wasn't detected at all, even the one flying at a high altitude. In a previous S400 scenario, Cap used a B2 and set it's rcs to 0.15 sqm. The Big Bird search radar used in that scenario is supposed to detect a 1 sqm target at 150 nm (open source info), so a 0.15 sqm rcs B2 would be detectable at 93 nm. Cap started the B2 at 70 nm and it was immediately engaged. Yet when he tried a F117 with an rcs he set to 0.03 sqm (so theoretically detectable by the Big Bird at 62 nm) it was only engaged at something like 15 nm. It almost seems as if DCS has some ad-hoc rules in place for targets with low-rcs targets. A target with 0.15 sqm rcs still seemed to follow the standard radar equation (i.e. fourth-root relationship of rcs to detection range). But rcs values in the 0.03 and 0.005 range seemed to have special ad-hoc rules attached to them by DCS. Really weird in-game behavior.

So at the briefing I noticed two things. 1 is the total probability of having enough grunts or just really good grunts on the ground being the solution. 2 I didn't see any mention of a guided bomb being dropped from 110k feet at Mach 3.2 😂. For real though grunts on the ground would be the solution one way or another I think. Whether they did it themselves or gave the targeting. Too bad nobody has any there officially. Cap, it’s the propeller that causes their radar cross section, most of the propellers have leading edge metal protection from FOD and it’s pointed at the radar at almost 90*, think about having a glow stick and spinning it around fast, the little strip might as well be a solid disk of metal 6-8 feet across, same with high bypass turbofans. Also, size doesn’t matter to radar, the beam that hits you is a straight line, the shape of the object will reflect the same amount of radiation if it’s 2 feet or 200 feet across, since the receiver is miles away and tiny changes will send the radar all over the place so as long as the shape is the same, the radiation return is the same regardless of size.

Re. the statement: "the radiation return is the same regardless of size". This is incorrect. Pls. refer to Merril Skolnik "Radar Handbook", chapter 14 "Radar Cross Section" E. Knott, table 14.1. Radar return is dependent on the size of an object as regards to specular scattering in the optics region (i.e. incident wavelength is on the order of 5 times smaller than the object size). For example a metal square plate of with side length "L" has an RCS which is directly proportional to "L^4", similarly a metal sphere of radius "R" has an RCS directly proportional to "R^2", etc. As can be seen from the proportionality relationships, the size of the object has an effect on the RCS of the object, hence on the radiation return.

@@xenoaltrax485 yeah the problem with the paperwork is that in reality you’re more than a few feet from the detector, so even tiny changes in shape drastically affect the return, whereas the size barely changes relative to the detector, hence scale models being effective for testing radar cross section.
@xenoaltrax485
@xenoaltrax485 2 жыл бұрын
@@James31USFPoly Scaling is factored in RCS measurements. Refer to E.Knott "Radar Cross Section Measurements", chapter 12 "Scaling Laws". A scaling factor is included in the equations so that as the scale changes by a factor "w", the frequency in the test is changed by a factor "1/w". The same equations hold true at small scale as they do at large scale: dependency on size occurs at small scale, as they do at large scale.
